There's this piece in the Mirror linking us to Cabaye but it's more "wouldn't it be great if he came here" than "United are interested". Is there even a genuine link?

Sounds like they'll have to pay around £20 million to get him. Would have been a very good buy for us but with Fellaini I can't see us paying for him.

I suspect we'll get in the act for him if we can't get that priority signing in midfield before the deadline closes. Actually what would you lot prefer? Cabaye for 20-25m now or wait till the summer before we get Vidal/Kroos/Gundogan of that quality?
Im not sure if Cabaye is the type of world class midfielder we desperately need.
Wouldn't mind picking him up for 20m. 25m and I'd rather save the money to go towards a top class signing, even if it means waiting until the summer.
I'm surprised at the 14m bids from Arsenal and PSG, imo he's clearly worth 20m plus. Maybe not world class but compared to what we have already he's better than everyone (argument could be made for Carrick v Cabaye)

Anderson out Fellaini in, Fellaini has been injured for weeks but has still played more minutes than Andos season average.
I'd definitely go for the second option. We just added some world class quality to the team. Let's not dilute that again when we could go top quality in the summer. Besides, I fully expect Cabaye to be available in the summer as well, just in case.
That said, if Moyes feels he definitely needs a midfielder right now (doesn't look like he does), Cabaye will be a solid option and can slot in right away.

He'd be a good acquisition below 20 mill but he'll be taking up the last place in midfield, not as exciting as Mata but decent enough.
Indeed. I said it the other day, but I'm beginning to think we should offload Cleverley in an attempt to get in two midfielders. I suspect Moyes may begin to think this way provided he wants quality both now and in the Summer. Realistically, Carrick, Fletcher and Fellaini will be here in September. Cabaye now, and somebody like Vidal in the Summer would be ideal. Regretfully, Cleverley would have to make way for this to happen.

I'd take him now for 20million and then go for someone in the top bracket of midfielders in the summer. Offload Cleverley then maybe(as much as I like him).
I think if i was a United fan i would be just as excited as getting Cabaye now that you've got Mata, adding his grit and defensive qualities to a team that includes the likes of Kagawa, Rvp, Januzaj, Rooney, Carrick makes for a balanced team up there with the best in the league.
Cleverley for me is taking up the youth slot, he'll only be replaced by another youngster. Low wages and no great expectation of gametime.
Fletcher coming back makes it one final slot in my eyes.

This. Not every signing has to be for the long term future. Cabaye would come into the team and instantly improve our midfield. We can always try for a long term solution in the summer, but right now we need someone who can help towards salvaging this season.
Not much loyalty from you though. He's an England midfielder who might get stronger and better with age. Certainly, the England manager rates him. Perhaps, worthy of a squad position for a few seasons yet.

If we're just adding to the squad (rather than replacing some of our underperformers) then anyone we sign should be a fixture in the first team for the next few years. I'm hoping we'll end up with better players than Cabaye in that role.

Cabaye/Fellaini/On form Cleverley are about the same level for me. I'd wait til the summer and get in a top drawer player instead.
Yes, he's homegrown and should be utilsed as a squad player, with the hope he will eventually blossom like Carrick or Fletcher after the age of 25
Cabaye is largely better than Cleverley. At just about everything.
I think Cabaye is incredibly underrated on here, though arguably not the right transfer for us, as he's 28 and not likely to improve much further. He's still a very good player though. Better than what we have, and at the same level as Carrick.

Would be a bit of a sham if we are in for him now, although i think he will improve our midfeild greatly, we could and should have picked him up in the summer.

Only reason I can see us not going for Cabaye is our current philosophy is - older player must be in approaching world class - young players are ones that could end up top class. Adding another solid player is just not what we are looking for. Probably gun shy because supposedly we've had a team full of solid players. How many times have we heard we've got a strong squad.
