Yevhen Konoplyanka

Wasn't Ayre in the Ukraine for the past few days, and a fee hadn't been agreed in that time?

Liverpool's Winter window has been a bit like our Summer window. Don't think you'll lose Rodgers, but he surely won't be happy about missing out on so many wingers to strengthen your squad/first team when it's your best chance in years to finish in the top four.

Think there'll be a meltdown of gigantic proportions on LFC forums if we fail to finish in the top 4 this season. John Henry & Ian Ayre will be doing a lot of fire-fighting in the summer that's for sure.

Yep. Cue another open letter to the supporters.

Doubt there'll many that fall for it a 2nd time. Best case scenario for us is that Rodgers voices his concerns & displeasure at how we've conducted our transfer dealings, but manages to secure us a CL position. I'm pretty sure John Henry will ensure the right people - both on & off the pitch - will be brought in to give us a fighting chance next season.

If its true we did all we could and it was the Dnipro owner using illegal means, and we still don't get Konop, then it should at least ease Rodgers' fears that we don't try hard enough. Phew. I'm relieved again.

True Skywarden. This could very much be like the Suarez 'clause'. But Suarez's was a gentleman's understanding (not saying Konop's isn't).

Ayre/LFC had time to check Konop's contract by flying over there two days ago. Medical done, etc. Which could mean his contract was slightly more legally binding between player and club. He could sue, buy out his contract, then join us (or someone else) on a 'free' outside of the restrictive transfer window.

Doubt he'll do that though.

Not sure what Liverpool can do about it except wait until summer and try again if they want to. Even if the owner did something that Liverpool might consider illegal, this is Ukraine where the rich and powerful are a law unto themselves.

Exactly surf. A country in turmoil where I read a car dealer got kidnapped and beaten for opposing the government.

Imagine Konop being 'angry' at a billionaire in that country and trying to sue him. :)

In all honestly I hadn't heard of him to yesterday, I won't lose any sleep over missing out on him. We may have dodged a bullet, who knows! We aren't exactly lacking in the final third so its not as though it was a season make or break- our weak area is defence, when all players at our disposable are fit defence is good, unfortunately defence hasn't settled as a solid back 4 yet this season sue to injuries. If enrique/sakho/agger come back and Sterling, Suarez and Sturridge keep up their recent form then we have a great chance of 4th.

Konoplyanka has a release clause in his contract. Dnipro's management has confirmed this multiple times over the course of the past few years. The release clause is believed to be relatively reasonable, and in line with the total amount of Liverpool's bid. If Liverpool failed to get Konoplyanka, that is because Liverpool did not pay the entire sum that Dnipro wanted up front.

Also, have Liverpool's representatives not read the papers? Ukraine is in the middle of political turmoil at the moment, and you'd better believe that all Ukrainian oligarchs - including Kolomoiskiy - are presently preoccupied with political maneuvering. I'm not even sure that Kolomoyskiy would have had the time over the past 24 hours to look at Konoplyanka's paperwork.

If Liverpool wanted Konoplyanka, Liverpool should have met Konoplyanka's release clause and paid the entire sum up front, thereby taking Dnipro's ownership out of the equation. Failing that, talks should have started on January 1, instead of a few days ago, IMO.

Release clauses usually mean paying the whole amount in one go doesn't it? If they weren't prepared to do that, it's their own fault.

Liverpool should just sell Suarez and buy 4-5 konoplyankas. That is the way forward. :wenger:

We did meet his release clause. Their owner refused to sign the papers however if you believe British media reports (who have generally been more reliable than the Ukrainian ones in this saga).

Their owner definitely was involved in these negotiations, I don't know how you can say otherwise when every report points to this being the case.

Talks should start before January, but they didn't as this lad wasn't our first choice. If we hadn't been in for Salah, then maybe, but Konoplyanka was clearly a second option.

He looked class at an international tournament some years back.

Must be frustrating for Liverpool when player and club want it to happen but the selling club's owner doesn't.

Has to be the end of the line for Ayre. First given a whole summer to sign a striker - We ended up crossing our fingers for Clint fecking Dempsey and watched him go to spurs on the last day.

Given half a season to prepare and a month to sign a winger. Couldn't do it.

Come back Parry. All is forgiven.

Salah should have been ready to sign on the dotted line on january 2nd. If he wasn't, we'd have left us with time to pursue secondary targets.

This was a shambles. Ayre has to go.

think that Comolli is looking for a new job. He's great, I have heard.

Liverpool have a very tight budget. I dont know why people are blaming Ayre. its hardly his fault the owners wont put up the cash. They have racked up debts of nearly 100mil since they came in so its understandable they are cautious.

Brendan Rodgers has spent £94 million in his 18 months in charge, & re-couped £41 million in sales. This equates to a net spend of £53 million. After letting Kenny loose with the cheque-book, I do believe our owners want a bigger say in transfer dealings, which explains why they've set up a transfer committee. If the right player becomes available at the right price, I've no doubts they'll back the manager financially. & 50% of those debts you speak of consist of an interest-free loan from the owners themselves (FSG). The rest is taken up of having to pay off previous management & back-room staff, along with Comolli, & also in transfer dealings. Considering our current situation, & not having had CL football for 4 years now, I don't think we're doing too badly. Ian Ayre, for all his faults, has done, & is doing, an excellent job on the commercial side.

Reports were suggesting he'd had his medical and everything. Sounds like this one went even further than our botched effort to sign Herrera on deadline day.

From the outside doesn't seem like he is doing a bad job to me, you need to realise without CL football the type of players you want to sign become a hell of a lot harder to pull off.

The type of signings they're making these days are infinitely better than that mad £100m spell, on Carroll, Adam, Henderson and Downing!

Where exactly did the deal go wrong? The fee?

Their owner refused to sell after we met the release clause. We can't do anything, only the player could bring up legal action and he won't seeing as his dad is very good mates with the owner.

Konoplywanka.

I've heard that Liverpool did meet the buyout clause, but they wanted to pay in three installments and the selling club wanted it all upfront. Just business and you can't blame them. They figured they could make the same capitol and get more exposure for their club (attracting better players) if he stayed and DDFC were successful in the Europa League.

He seems a decent player, and at a decent age. We could do worse than try and get him, depending on Nani's situation.

Louis van Gaal is ready to kick off his Manchester United reign by squaring up to arch-rivals Liverpool over £12million Dnipro winger Yevhen Konoplyanka.

The Anfield giants have been confident of striking a deal for the 24-year-old this summer - despite simmering tensions with his Ukrainian club over their botched attempt at a deal for Konoplyanka on the final day of the January transfer window.

But deposed champions United have had him watched several times, the latest being in a League win on Sunday.

It is understood the club are now waiting for new boss Van Gaal to confirm he wants the player.

Konoplyanka started in all three of his country’s matches at Euro 2012, including their defeat by England.

The pacy, two-footed left winger scored four goals in his seven Europa League appearances for Dnipro this season, and helped them reach the Champions League qualifiers for next term.

And what could count against United in any battle for his services is their lack of European football.

Liverpool are already guaranteed a place in the Champions League group stages, while Spurs, who are also interested, are in the Europa League.

Two months after Liverpool’s failure to sign Konoplyanka on deadline day in January, Dnipro president Ihor Kolomoyskyi revealed that Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy had entered the race for the Ukraine international.

The north Londoners have yet to make a fresh bid, however, and Dnipro director Andriy Stetsenko has now claimed: “Konoplyanka is still available for any club to buy. His contact has a buy-out option worth £12million.”

From the Mirror so there's probably not much in it. Would take him though, think he's a very good little player & we could do with a good winger but I doubt we'd get him for the £12m quoted fee if we are genuinely interested.

What's he like as a player? I've been told by a Liverpool supporter that he isn't bad. Not sure how much stock to take from that though.

Last time we 'swooped in' on a Liverpool target we ended up with Ashley Young... Don't think he is good enough for us though that's based on very limited viewing.
