I bought an Xbox X specifically for Starfield, have to say I’m pretty disappointed it’s only going to be 30fps.

It looks great mind you and I can’t wait to try it but 30fps?

All that stuff in the game comes at a really big cost I'd guess, the CPU is going to be working overtime to run this.

Not offering a 60fps mode even at 1080p is bananas. Especially with all Microsoft’s marketing for this gen being that it was the gen of 60 and 120fps. Embarrassing.

I get the feeling they may be rushing this out.

I'm sure it'll be perfectly serviceable as a game, but Bethesda are not what they once were so I have no expectations for them to radically change the gameplay.

Their selling point seems to be the procedural generation. May as well just call it No Man's Starfield.

I'm pretty excited for Starfield but going to wait a while for it to be fixed before pulling the trigger.

Got too many ongoing live service games on the go as it is, to be honest so no time for a long single player game.

Did you watch the video? It's definitely option B

Just like it will be Bethesda 4K too.

(Don't worry though, these console gamers think there'll be a magic mod that unlocks the framerate and magically boost the power of the X to push higher!)
I can never work out if you are taking the piss or super serious about all this

I couldn't remember if the Bethesda deal meant stuff was timed or it was a mix!
It's a mix.

I'll probably play on PC.
I like mouse and keyboard with Bethesda games.

Just realised it's approaching 12 years since Skyrim came out and they've only released Fallout 4, which was crap, and the cut multiplayer Fallout moneygrab, which was worse.

What are they playing at...

Am I wrong? Or you too busy making excuses for another game that will only hit 30fps (at best) on a next gen console?

It looks just as I expected, Fallout in space. The uncanny valley NPCs are back and it looks like Bethesda have worried more about going up against No Man's Sky.

When the community fix it I'll play it on PC/Steam Deck

Yes you're wrong. Even if the game isn't 'for you' I don't think anybody can watch that footage and genuinely come to the conclusion that it looks average.

There's nothing half as ambitious as Starfield on PS5. It wouldn't hit 60 on there either.

And being so CPU heavy even a 1080p mode isn't going to help much getting it to 60. It's a shame. But I'll take Starfield at 30fps the same way people who love TOTK are accepting an unlocked 30fps at 720p. I wouldn't scale back the ambition to achieve 60.

I went the other way with it compared to you. I was expecting a relatively sparce world, but procedurally generated content aside which I'll probably ignore it looks like they've put a lot of effort into creating planets full of people, stories and things to do. That was the bit that surprised me the most about the in-depth look and it looks quite Mass Effect in some ways.

It looks like they're trying to hit both, whether they actually manage that we'll find out though.

I think it's fair to say it looks a lot more ambitious than just Fallout in space. The No Man's Sky comparison is understandable, but they still showed more than enough handcrafted content to assume it's not just a glorified version of that game either. It shows a lot of promise.

The thing is, with current Bethesda you can't just trust them to deliver on that promise. It can look phenomenal and turn out crap. I hope it's every bit as good as it can be, but until it's out and actually getting good reviews from trusted sources, I'm keeping my expectations well under control.

Just catching up now on the clips from yesterday.

Starfield looks very promising indeed. 30fps is disappointing but I’ve put in over 100 hours on TOTK and its probably going to be in my top 10 of all time games so as long as Starfield is good I can live with that

I’ve never played any Fable games for some reason so I will certainly check the new one out

Avowed looks right up my alley.

Hellblade, I was lukewarm on the first one. So I dunno. Sound was fantastic in the ad like the original game. So, it will have that at least

All in all, finally seems good stuff on the way as the console desperately needs games. My Game PAss expires in June of 2024 so hopefully they all come out before then

Yep.

Expectations in check are grand and needed. We all know the meh and average comments are trolling though.

I'd say that presentation is up there with the best pre release reveals/deep dives we've seen. MS couldn't have expected a better reaction.

And whilst I'm sure it'll have some problems, it would have come out a lot sooner if not for MS it seems. They'll be doing everything they can to avoid a cyberpunk moment.

It's exactly my type of game so not sure what angle you're going for with your first paragraph. I think it looks average so you're immediately wrong. It looks like a slightly prettier Bethesda game from the last 15 years.

You're basing your ideas of "ambition" on Bethesda and MS marketing machine, and have fell for it hook, line and sinker.

I hope it's good, because a grand space adventure where you get to explore a solar system sounds right up my street, but gameplay looks like a Fallout game, a series I've repeatedly bounced off since Bethesda took over and made it first person.

What game has that much content, that many systems and that much simulation happening?

You were never going to like it that was clear. I was expecting lots of meh reactions before the footage - some want Fallout in space and some really dont; there seemed no win:win scenario. But actually they killed it with the presentation and the reaction online shows that.

I get the flack here for being the console warrior but I have a ps5 and can enjoy ps5 games. It's a shame you can't look past which console a game is on. Especially when PS5 has moving to more and more GAAS and Xboxs studios acquisitions are finally starting to lay out a meaningful roadmap long term. Fable, Avowed, Hellblade and the rest - we both know you'll find them average too.

If, as a number of people are suggesting that this is bound by the CPU, which seems incredibly likely given the systems involved, it wouldn't be feasible. The CPU sounds like the bottleneck, not GPU.

Well Fable and Hellblade, absolutely. Fable is as twee and boring as they come and Hellblade, despite its best in class sound design has about as much depth as a worm's grave and gets really boring.

I'd take a look at Avowed when it eventually sees the light of day.

I'm far from a console warrior, I play predominantly on PC and if I was going to fanboy for one Nintendo would get that privilege.

I'm not happy with Sony's output this year or the direction they seem to be taking (I'm also privy to certain things I'm not able to discuss) so I too am worried about what's happening there. Doesn't make MS any less shit this gen and doesn't excuse the god awful output they've had.

Again, I hope Starfield is good. It currently looks alright, average, middle of the road or what ever synonym you wish to use; but once the community get their hands on it they'll inevitably make a game out of it.

I feel sorry for you @b82REZ

I'm sure Foamstars season 27 will keep you going though.

Now that's not my type of game at all. What kind of adult plays online shooters nowadays?

Although all reports seem to say Foamstars is actually really good and not just a rip-off of Splatoon.

Personally I found the showcase fantastic (Skyrim is my GOAT - big fan of Bethesda style games) so the news about 30fps didn't get to me at all - I loved the look of the game and it looked fine before I found that out.
