Westminster Politics

Hi, is that your cartoon?

Some of Boris Johnson’s supporters would like him back as prime minister. But Steve Baker, the Northern Ireland minister and a strong Johnson supporter during the Brexit process, told Times Radio that he should not come back. He said:

I don’t doubt that Boris feels that he left number 10 prematurely. But let’s not forget why it was. It was over the Pincher affair …
The idea that Boris Johnson could be back as prime minister when those were the circumstances which finally led to his departure, I’m afraid is fanciful.
Boris will have my admiration for a long time. He saved this country from a major constitutional crisis. He saved us from Jeremy Corbyn. And that means he saved the future of this nation. And I personally am very reluctant to be critical because we owe him this country’s prosperity and freedom.
But the idea of him coming back – I think he should bank the wins he’s got. Honestly, Boris, thank you, you saved the country. Don’t come back.

Probably one of the funnier things I've read today.

He fecking appointed her to investigate partygate didn’t he? Seems like Labour could have just waited a bit to offer her the job though.
The timing of it seems utterly ridiculous.

Is it possible they’ve been sitting on the report waiting for a good moment politically to release and Starmer gave them one better than they could imagine yesterday?

My understanding is that Johnson has only been given the report today before the details were released. It actually fits nicely for Starmer as it’s another attack on Johnson with the misleading of Parliament which covers for the Sue Gray recruitment.

I love all of this anger about the Sue Gray report, when back when it was released they had this to say about it…

So which was it, a damp squib that proved Boris did nothing, or a left wing conspiracy comparable to Machiavelli that brought him down (conveniently forgetting that it was ‘Pincher by name, pincher by nature’ that eventually did for him)?

Exactly what Oakeshott was looking for.

Pile on the distraction, we'll lap it up like good little feck wits.

What isn’t?

him whatsapping about a new variant deployment to frighten the pants off the public! How?

If he wrote stuff like that in his messages then he goes down as the thickest politician in history if he then goes and hands his phone to a journalist NDA or not.

Easy to forge screenshots for some added juice from the story

It’s bad enough that she’s leaked them, if they’ve been tampered with as well then surely that would have huge legal implications.

I don’t doubt that they talk like that behind the scenes, and the messages taken out of context probably look worse than they are. The government’s messaging throughout the lock downs was done to have better compliance, otherwise they would have been pointless to implement the lock downs.

even so - that little snippet goes beyond what I would take at face value.

But all in all its a shit show and the UK government again looks so so bad, beyond any doubt.
His political career should be kaput!
