Westminster Politics

This man is a constant stain on British politics. How people are now allowed to come on the airwaves and tell brazen lies is disgusting.

Worse than that, he has his own show doesn’t he?

Fear not, conspiracy nutters, the Mail has got this covered...

You joke and obviously it's all a load of old bollocks but hasn't Starmer shot himself in the foot a bit with this appointment?

For someone who a lot of people seem to defend (more or less) by saying "he's sitting on the fence so as not to give the Tories any ammo" hasn't he done exactly that here? All the gammons will see are these headlines by Tory rags such as The Mail one above and parrot it verbatim. Might well be the catalyst for Johnson back in before the next general election as well.

Only angle I can think of is that they are hoping Sunak blocks her appointment so they can counter claim he's trying to sabotage Labour or something. Seems a stretch though. Dumb move in terms of optics but maybe they have a longer term plan?

Then again, they've had to do literally nothing to move ahead in the polls so expecting something astute from them is probably not very realistic.

Obviously I disagree with him but it’s also why it’s a stupid move from Starmer and stupid timing while the covid inquiry is still ongoing.

Doesn’t exactly dispel the conspiracy that Starmer is a Tory stooge does it

Yeah it certainly goes against the current optics first policy. It's like they've found that she's polled we'll with Tory voters who oppose Boris but they haven't actually considered how it might look and play out with the electorate.

You could argue its them trying to be on the 'sensible' and serious side and provide further contrast between them and the Tories. To most it'll just look seriously suspect and risks losing those on the fence.

Boris resigning had nothing to do with party gate. It was to do with the sex pest pincher. Also the Police issued fines to Boris not Sue Gray. Boris stooges like Rees Mogg are trying to spin a different story here and I’m sure the brain dead will believe it. Sue Gray is an experienced civil servant and got made a job offer and accepted it. Wasn’t that long ago former civil servant David Frost got made a Lord by the Tories.

It’s amazing how the Tories who hid behind her integrity when defending the report have now turned the other way. Sick of the news cycles giving this stupid theory attention as well. Amazing how the BBC can do that but suddenly not report how Brexit affects the UK.

You’re preaching to the choir mate.

It’s not my understanding of it that is the issue, it’s going to be front page news in The Sun, Daily Express, Daily Mail, Telegraph and Spectator.

The way it’s presented to their readership is that it will stink. The truth is irrelevant in politics. It’s a bad move.

Partisan views aside, it's not really the best look for politics in general is it. There shouldn't be a situation where civil servants might be influenced by the prospect of a job with the opposition like this.
I'm sure no pre-arrangement was made but heading up an inquiry should disqualify you from such a political move in the short term.

Rupa Huq reinstated. She was the MP who called Kwasi superficially black.

Think it's the right move personally.

But these things happen eg David Frost, Jonathan Powell etc. The Covid Inquiry will cover the whole Covid process. Sue Gray who has already ruled on partygate will probably play a minor role in that. Clearly Labour should have been expecting some backlash and hopefully should deal with it.

I think they will print something else if not this mate. Those papers will always print something against Labour and in spin of their paymasters. I do agree it’s an unusual appointment given the optics so clearly Labour must have wanted her badly. Let’s hope they can deal with the fallout.

I just hate Rees Mogg so already riled up against the twat.

I'm surprised that it isn't a major headline on the Daily Mail site yet. Those kind of Partygate style stories were quite popular with them an hour ago.

So now her appointment might actually be delayed anyway. Seriously what the feck are Labour doing, talk about a massive own goal.

It’s delayed anyway as it needs to go threw a process and eventually agreed by the prime minister. I wouldnt call it an own goal, sure it’s a strange appointment but they must want her. They knew it would cause flack but it’s brought partygate back into the headlines at the expense of Rishi’s deal and it’s all trumped by the Priviliges Committee report as well so those defending Boris haven’t got a leg to stand on.

all good points, plus riling up the nutters in the Tory party for Rishi to have to wrangle too.

It's not strange for the government in waiting to hire someone who knows how the civil service works. Smart move, actually. Whether people should be allowed to move this seamlessly is a separate question and applies more widely. But labour can't be unhappy the way the Tories have reacted.
