Westminster Politics

So the rates of inflation are down to external factors rather than the government, so if/when inflation comes back down presumably the government will not be taking any credit? Ah...
"High inflation is in no way linked to government policy"

"...here is how the government can halve inflation"

Why have you brought Labour into that argument when they really do not have anything to do with it?

Well two reasons.

One to play on the fact that Tory Ministers are blaming Labour for the strikes to try and gain support amongst the public.

Two, to play on the fact that Starmer is doing his best to stand for nothing and no one. I wish we had New Labour of the mid 1990s. Even in full knowledge of their many flaws.

Starmer is keeping his cards very close to his chest. I can’t say it’s a bad tactic given that most of the country seems to be in “anyone but the fecking Tories” mode. Why give them any ammunition? Why give them a chance to go on the attack?

I hope and expect Starmer to start being more clear and forthcoming with his policies as we draw closer to the next GE. Right now, there isn’t really much point in revealing anything.

I watched the Channel 4 news last evening which was a studio debate about the NHS. Mrs Whately was appearing by video while Wes Streeting was in the studio.
He was on top form showing empathy with the NHS workers and made Whately look rather stupid. Thought it was a brilliant showing from Streeting.

The libertarian wing are probably cheering on his refusal to wear a seat belt.

Once in a while I remember I love this country. A PM getting fined by the police can only happen here.

He’s been fined more times then any money recieved by deprived areas for levelling up.

Good point. Not that he cares. But it makes a nonsense of his pledge when he became PM. And it gives ammunition to those Tories who are not backing him.
Very careless to shoot yourself in the foot like that.

So we have a PM who has been fined by the police for breaking the law for a second time. Even worse than Boris.

Sunak has had more fixed penalty notices during his times in Downing Street than I've had in my life (one, speeding)

Zahawi's tax issue will rumble on

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/nadhim-zahawi-tax-legal-action-b2266128.html

The Conservative Party chairman Nadhim Zahawi tried to stop The Independent exposing that he was being investigated over his tax affairs by threatening to sue if we published.

Mr Zahawi, who was chancellor at the time, repeatedly said he had paid “all due taxes” and would take legal action if we reported that he had been investigated.

The Independent ignored his threats and published two reports, detailing how Mr Zahawi had faced inquiries from the Serious Fraud Office, the National Crime Agency and HMRC.

Mr Zahawi did not sue or complain to this newspaper – and has now reportedly paid a penalty of more than £1m to HMRC in a settlement worth almost £5m in total.

The article continues in more detail - the investigations by various bodies are spelled out, and his repeated threats of legal action are directly quoted

There is even a pop up video in which he declares that if he becomes Prime Minister he will publish all of his tax affairs

That isn't as open as it sounds if it has an unspoken corollary that he isn't Prime Minister, and public money was spent on investigation.

Just goes to show that he is not able to live by the same standards as the rest of us.
I am the same as you by the way.

The Tories can literally break down the NHS so it doesn't function and everyone will soon need to pay for private care, if they can afford it or suffer. Just like they have already done for anyone looking for an NHS dentist.

But a headline getting major traction is the PM not wearing a seatbelt!

Everything that's wrong with our media.

Try this for a headline.

https://news.sky.com/story/patients...isits-to-ease-waits-sajid-javid-says-12791533

Former health secretary Sajid Javid is advocating people being charged for a GP appointment and for going to A&E.
Think about that... being charged because you have had a stroke or heart attack for example
And I am sure that he is only saying what other Tory MPs are saying.
And you thought that we had a National Health Service free at the point of need...

How far down would you need to scroll down the BBC news website to find that story? ;)

We'll start seeing more of this talk from the Tories over the next few years. They've deliberately ran the NHS into the ground. They've intensified the destruction in the past few years using the pandemic as the excuse for all the issues they've created.

The NHS pay issue is the latest strategy. Keep their wages as low as possible to push people out of the profession or encourage them to move into private health care.

Jesus Christ this should be an absolutely massive story. It’s appalling.

I think you'll struggle to find it at all, definitely not in a prominent position since the Tories have infiltrated BBC news.

Certainly. Especially with the headlines this morning about Boris Johnson £800,000 loan and the chairman of the BBC.

Yes it should. But there has been so many similar stories that I think that people are becoming desensitised and this won't stand out.
