Westminster Politics

I applaud them but annoyingly this group has a chance to be this election's Momentum, splitting the Labour vote, and resulting in the Tories dragging themselves over the finish line.

Exactly 'Noises off'... works every time for the Tories... trouble is when these guys who want to 'storm the barricades' grow older (like me) they learn the lessons they should have learned years before, but as they say "you can't put an old head on young shoulders"... it's probably as well!

You also get senile and selfish

Then at minimum it should serve to further cripple the popularity of the Tories. Show them (for anyone who doesn’t believe it yet) as the self serving twats that they are.

I disagree. Public opinion of the govt is already so low that all Labour would have to do is come in and reverse a few of the headline policies.

Furthermore, as much as I would want to believe otherwise, there is no guarantee that if it goes another two years before the next election that Labour will get in. A lot can happen in two years (just look at the last two).

I was referring more to the macro economic picture which looks fecked. They'd be smart to sit things out for a while and come back when things look healthier in my opinion. But yeah you're right in that you never know what's gonna happen.

True, also you get... liver spots, A/F pacemakers, metal joints, loss of hair (and patience) old man's drip (and droop), hearing deficiencies, sight impairments and much more; however, you can remember Georgie Best, racing down the pitch at OT (almost the full length) and scoring against Chelsea, with 'chopper' Harris having two, or was it three, goes at bringing him down... and then you forget all the time when you were young you spoke and acted like a plonker!! ;)

The thing that actually made me laugh the most here was 'I get up every morning as PM.....' Spoken like someone who's been in the job years. Perhaps even months. She's been PM all of 26 days so far. fecking idiot.

The idea that tax isn't about redistribution...

I think we should stop redistributing my tax money to their fecking salaries that's for sure. Otherwise I would be happy with a lot more redistribution from rich to normal folk personally.
yep.

the literal definition of government, of any and all governments, is redistribution. take away a government's capacity to levy taxes and redistribute said funds and you take away the government. that's all they exist to do. the tories want to gaslight you into accepting worse public conditions under the auspice of "private enterprise", which is itself a redistribution of previously collected money in the form of higher burden upon the general public to the benefit of the richest people via the 45p taxrate. at least, it would have been to the benefit of the richest if the market didn't shit it out on contact necessitating a public intervention which will cost more than the initial benefits which the tax measures were supposed to have. that's why it might be the worst peacetime legislation in the history of british politics. certainly in modern history.

It is being reported that Truss has advised the King not to attend the COP27 in Egypt. No reason provided but I can imagine that King Charles, who is passionate about climate change was due to give a speech. Now maybe a virtual speech.
Don't really understand what this has to do with the PM...

If I was the Government of Tuvalu I would invite Charles to give a speech for them. He is Head of State of 15 nations, after all.

Unless JRM has been playing a long game since before his balls even dropped, this is unfortunately what he is actually like and has always been like...

I think this has been misunderstood slightly.

His PR is carefully crafted. Doesn’t mean he’s not really a posh twat who enjoys anachronistic aesthetics.

The cartoonish image of him as a posh guy from the past who still talks to ‘nanny’ and indeed almost EVERYTHING that’s known about him is down to his own media presentation. He is way more guarded and media aware than almost all other MPs - that’s obvious.

His own personality, his real views are veiled by this media image, successfully - hence the replies in here to the notion that he’s ‘media savvy’… as though he’s just a posh old fashioned guy who stumbled into politics and somehow rose up the cut throat ladder of modern politics.

His vile, blatantly sneering tweets on religion for example (where he pretends to be devoted Christian) are clearly not his opinion, and are so over the top you can feel his hatred for the people he’s trying to fool in them.

He’s a hateful, dangerous politician wrapped up in the ‘novelty image’ of a posh swot.

It doesn’t mean that image is completely fabricated - just that he’s very good at using it to become a media character. Something that takes media savvy to achieve.

Politicians with this type of cartoonish image are always the ones to be most wary of, as they are very often the most dangerous and psychopathic and the general public will pretty much always go for them in an election.

Yeah, but...*long pause*...Ukraine.

They should but she's lazy she hasn't done any work on what is one of her biggest weaknesses being interviewed.
She's clearly done loads of work on presentation, particularly around voice coaching. She's not as bad as the pork markets speech days, but is so painfully robotic and completely unable to go off script.
Not sure if watching Trusd today made me more bored, annoyed or frustrated.

I've just listened to the "highlights" without any awkward silences which I hear there were. The most clueless PM ever with no personality.

The UK have to get rid of her by whatever means possible as quickly as possible.

Hoping that Brexit would turn out alright - it never could possibly do so - and hoping these morons will do anything good for the country is beyond belief.

If a VONC is possible in the HoC and can result in a GE , do it because if the UK waits another year or two there'll be nothing left to salvage.
There must be enough Tory MP's who would sacrifice their careers for the good of the country.

Frustrated for me. Answer the question you’re asked, not the one you want to answer with exactly the same answer every time. It’s not even like Kuenssberg had her over a barrel with little wriggle room to make her squirm. She is just slow witted with little to no lateral thinking; I couldn’t work out if her brain even understood the words her mouth was speaking, if she genuinely believes what she says, or if she knows she’s lying and doesn’t care. And I’m not sure which is worse

This is the Brexit ultra incarnation of the Tory party. It's a libertarian enterprise in it's purist form the 'old Whig' way. An attempt to establish 'Singapore on Thames'. It was interesting today to hear Jake Berry telling people to get a better job if their bills are too high, it seems that they're committed to the libertarian narrative, at least for now. The problem with this ideology is that it's diametrically opposed to the generally unspoken consensus in the UK. It's no surprise to see Truss tanking in the polls. She is a radical though so seemingly committed to this path despite the evidence against it in terms of popularity. It's good news for Labour electorally.

Same I think- that overrode the annoyance, particularly the £6,000 energy bills, rates rising worldwide and Putin's war lines. May's premiership was so unmemorable, I'm struggling to figure out who was the worst, most robotic speaker of the two.

I wish the Singapore on the Thames thing would die. Singapore as far as I know was made involuntarily independent. They made the best of a difficult situation and at least built good quality social housing.

It's quite surreal to see the president in tears at having to announce his country's independence

The tories inflicted their own "independence" on themselves and have let the housing market go to shit. The only thing they'll probably emulate from Singapore is having a quasi dictatorship but with less benevolence.

(I'm happy to be corrected if I've made any mistakes with regards to Singapore)

It's just a metaphor for a low regulation low tax economy, actually coined by EU leaders.

Surely Truss and Kwarteng can’t survive this. And, then what happens, surely the Tories can't just foist another PM on the country, it would trigger an early General Election right?
They won't remove her and they are not going to call an election.

The only silver lining I can think of, Truss will finally kill any credibility the 'Singapore on Thames' type bollocks ever had. And good riddance, but what a price for the country.

Why would any Tory want to trigger an election now? They would be wiped out.
Perhaps getting out now whilst the country is in the shit and rebuilding reputation, is seen as a better prospect than playing pass the parcel with Tory leader till next election.
