Westminster Politics

When the only thing the leader of the opposition is demanding is an apology, how bad can the incident be?
Johnson would just keep parroting the line about playing politics anyway if Starmer did call for his resignation.

At least Starmer dismissed the rubbish that it couldn't be prosecuted as it was "historical" and got Johnson to verbally commit to giving all the documentation/reports that come out of this "investigation" to the Met Police. Whether he'll actually do it is another thing.

One thing for sure is there would have been pictures taken at the parties, probably some with Johnson's face in and it will be a matter of time before they're "leaked", especially now Johnson has been repeating that he had no knowledge.

It’s quite important at the minute with people waiting years for appointments and having to pull their own teeth out instead.
It's a long way down the list of importance for most of the population today though. Feels like it eases the pressure massively

It'd be just like the Tories to think everyone lives in an unacceptable manor just because they can afford to have one. Most of us just have normal houses.

 Definitely one for the what do we do about this thread.

The One Show did a feature on it on Monday quite a lot of people are being affected by it but yeah Boris should resign if he had any integrity at all.

Why can they though? For the last 11 years Labour have never looked like a alternative government. This is why opposition matters so much. Sorry this is also on people who think a man who couldn’t eat a sandwich without looking like a twat, some angry grandad with a creepy cultish following and the least charismatic man in history were/are the men to get the job done.

Sorry this hasn’t been difficult for the Tories at fecking all and the blame is shared by those who elected and supported three opposition leaders who in their own way were an absolute embarrassment.
Athough there is some truth in your point (not the 3 reasons you criticise the opposition leaders though which are ridiculous and part of the tabloid/MEDIA problem). Ultimately we have to focus on blaming the culprits, which are the party in government.

I'd also blame first past the post system and the UK media before the opposition.

Although Labour did come close in 2017, maybe without the internal party sabotage they could've won. We will never know.

Shambolic, unable to confirm if person chosen to investigate whether the party happened actually attended the party :wenger:

Edit:

And how can they possibly make this any worse..... oh....

The One Show perplexes me. No one I know in real life admits they watch it or like it. It's not a show that generates online buzz. But they still get millions of live viewers tuning in each show.

The last time I saw it was when they did an interview a couple of years ago with George Lazenby who was the one time Aussie James Bond.

I mean downing street is (im assuming) pretty secure ... and secured by the police at that... so really the police must know exactly who was there... when they went in and left

They’ve got Jermaine Jenas now too you’d love it…

Ah but havent you been paying attention? the police dont investigate crimes that have already happened. Im off to murder a few people and then hide in the hills for a few months, by then it wont need investigating and I can carry on as normal. Tatty bye.

There must be some severe bullying/blackmail culture going on within the Tory ranks.

Either that or they're spineless twats. They all are just happy to sit idly by and let Boris throw them under the bus to save his own skin.

Ian Blackforth saying what Keir should have.

The SNP were the only thing close to an actual opposition for Brexit as well.

Watching them in parliament over the last few years has been like supporting Chelsea to win the league because we fecking have to because our lot are so useless.

Labour are just fecking garbage. Kier is one of the worst leaders of the opposition that I can remember, just utterly spineless. He seems incapable of mounting any kind of challenge against the Government.

And there's yet more, a quiz too. Starting to wonder was there any actual work done at all in December by No.10, seems they were too busy holding parties.

I don't think Johnson will survive now. I expect there to be a leak today or tomorrow as to how many 'letters the chairman of the 1922 committee has received'. The trouble is I think a new leader would actually be a boost for the Tories, so if I'm wrong I don't care.

If they announce a lockdown and vaccine passports I think that will trigger a few more letters... think there needs to be 50 or so to trigger an election and 40 conservative MPs signed a declaration against vaccine passports so it could get close if they follow through on it

I'm not convinced that a new leader would be a boost for the Tories. No other Conservative politician has that teflon-like likability that Johnson has. The rest of them are ghouls and would have hardly any appeal to the wider masses. Sure they'll shore up the Conservative base but I don't see many in the Northern wall voting for them. Johnson's appeal goes down to many thinking he is a laugh, can't see Sunak having that appeal.

For that reason I can see the Tories sticking with Johnson. For a lot of the MPs it would be better to stick with the devil you know.

That Jacob Rees-Mogg clip is awful, reprehensible stuff. Just openly mocking the regulations that many people obeyed while people in the audience condescendingly chuckle.

There's no army of bots than can bury this stuff. It's sickening.

Tories would be mad to risk a snap election with approval ratings plummeting at short notice, especially given the huge mandate they got voted in on in 2019. As much as they might want to, they're not going to risk their position in having absolute sway of government for this.

I expect Boris to ride out the next few months, taking the hits (justifiably) as he has to go against his own stance/policies in reintroducing lockdown restrictions and forcing the hands of those refusing to get the vaccine. Once the wave starts to subside/things look more promising, I could see him stepping down or something. But under no circumstance will the Tories want to go to the polls anytime soon.

Yeah, the affable oaf mask is very useful to them and it would be a bad move to lose it.

At least JRM has the decency to look like a fecking vampire.

Which clip? Not seen this

Sunak's been big favourite for some time now, but no idea how his popularity measures up across parliamentary MPs, the party faithful and the wider public?

They don't have to have a general election...

50 letters to the 1922 committee would trigger a vote of confidence in the pm as leader

If he lost that (or won unconvincingly like thatcher) he would have to go

Conservatives then elect a new leader who becomes pm

If the mps can agree on one candidate it does not even have to go to the Conservative members

Rishi probably

In terms of the wider public, he is currently the most popular Conservative politician.

However it has been on a continuous decline since the summer. A lot of his popularity was due to him giving stuff away during the height of the pandemic.
