We desperately need a right back

I think Rafael is one of the best RB's in the league when he's playing...but the problem is when we need him most his fitness lets him down. As much as I like Raf, he is too undependable to even be a backup RB. He should and is most likely moving on.
Well that's a load of rubbish. Yes he had a bad start to the year but he has been injured less than say RVP. He has been fit for the last few months, just not played. He is definitely able to be part of a squad rotation.

I think it's time to let go of Rafael. We need to build a squad of non-injuryprone players.

I think LVG has already let him go. I wonder how much we'll get for him and from who. I see him going down the same road to obscurity like his brother.

His injury record suggests otherwise, he is a great player but an undependable one.

So I guess people have all concluded that Varela would not play for us again? He was very good last year, and only joined Madrid on loan. He's a prospect and may be ready for a breakout season. He was certainly close to the first team under Moyes.

Rafael is fit since weeks and can't get a game ahead of Valencia.....this should tell us everything.
Herrera couldn't get a game ahead of Rooney in midfield, doesn't mean that was the better choice does it?.

For certain reasons he obviously prefers Valencia in that position, but it doesn't mean it's the "best" option, it's just his option.

I personally think for the easier games where the fullback is more attacking Rafael should be chosen, but the tougher games Valencia is the more rounded defender.

I think I read somewhere that the loan came with an option to buy, like Henriquez at Dinamo Zagreb. That normally seems to mean the club are looking to sell the player.

I'm not sure it would make sense if we were 'looking to sell' Varela. I know there was talk about him being unsettled, but he was amongst the most promising of our reserves, and I remember him being name-checked by Phil Neville about his future prospects. He also cost £2.5m, and had pedigree.

I think his loan was agreed as part of the Di Maria deal, but if Madrid don't wish to pursue, especially as they have just bought a very expensive RB, I don't see why he can't return here. If he does come back, he'd either be in the first-team squad, or go on loan again - as he has probably outgrown the 21s.

Harsh i think personally. Granted he has suffered so unfortunate injuries this season but discarding him from the club is bit over the top IMO, guy is only 24 years of age. Rafael has put in descent performances down the years. Rafael IMO is a great right back and talented footballer. Going forward he is terrific and defensively he is very good. Under the formation that LVG has now finally put in and relishes with success with it down his previous clubs (the 433), this system will benefit Rafael so much.

I understand why LVG has dropped him though and put A.Tony in front of him, he lacks discipline.
LVG "philosophy" means that players has a specific roles defensive and offensive the team must be organised about it. Rafael is a guy who does get very energetic and gets caught up in the moment which does causes a risk at times, but i do believe and i hope he'll become more discipline about his football and hopefully get his place back in the team.

Obviously im not saying united does not need a right back, in fact there needs to be some compete for a place in that position. Because since Gary Neville retired, Rafael has no competition in that position and has been guaranteed starter. So IMO, keep Rafael in the ranks and bring a decent right back that can compete for that place. Maybe Dani Alves on a free? not the same he used to be but none the less he's still decent, especially on free transfer so who knows, but defo need a decent attacking full back that can provide support for the wingers.

Do we really need a RB? Valencia has been playing really well, I still rate Rafael, LVG has said McNair is going to be a brilliant player for us at RB and Saidi Janko looks to have a lot of potential.

1. McNair is not a RB, he should be developed in his natural position IMO
2. Rafael is going to be sold
3. Valencia has been good but what happens when he gets injured? Janko is too inexperienced and needs to be eased in the cup competitions. We have the CL next season, we need a recognized and experienced RB to battle it out with Valencia

Good bitta confidence there with Champions League :D

With the current stories running that Clyne will sign a new deal at Southampton and Avles will extend with Barca, as well as Aurier signing a contract with PSG, I wonder who LvG is targeting for this role as most journos seem to think it's a priority for him.

Darmian or Coleman maybe? Unless our scouts have found a hidden gem somewhere....

Still guessing it'll end up being Clyne though.

I think Coleman makes a lot of sense for us, he's add a good age for us to get his peak years and he is PL proven.

Im hoping we can get a younger player of similar or better quality. Clyne fits the bill, and being English he'll probably stay at the club for the rest of his career.

I doubt he'll sign. Southampton are hopeful he will and they're putting a lot of pressure on him. Other reports are saying Koeman has put in place a ten day deadline for Clyne to sign the contract. Nothing has come out of his camp regarding staying at Soton

I don't think Clyne is all that good and he's only 18 months younger than Coleman who is a good bit better and being Irish he's not likely to leave either.

Clyne would be a decent improvement on Valencia, just no guarantee that he'd reach the level of the top fullbacks in the league. He's no Zabaleta, Ivanovic or Azpilicueta. There must be better options in europe unless Clyne is the cheaper option, which is unlikely.

Personally I'm not convinced that he's a better option at rightback than Ashley Young would be, if Di Maria found form or we signed Depay/Felipe Anderson and needed to find another position for Young.

I prefer Clyne to Coleman. I am not impressed with Coleman at all defensively.

Much better going forward though, which is more in keeping with what I'd want from a United fullback, especially with Shaw on the other side. Doesn't have to be Coleman, anyone with a serious attacking threat would keep me happy.

I miss Evra really. :(

Yeh I agree we need a right back who's an attacking threat. Our stye of play means we'll get more out of a Dani Alves type than a Lahm. Coleman fits the former category nicely.

In addition to Coleman, Darmian or perhaps Serge Aurier might be good options if we were looking for an attacking right back. Fabinho if we wanted someone very good defensively. It's hard to think of anything Clyne excels at; he is decent defensively, but his final ball is lacking and he's poor in the air.

Can't see PSG sell Aurier after they just changed their loan into a permanent move this week. Van Der Wiel maybe?

I was pissed when we loaned him out. Really expected him to come in and keep Rafael out. I really hope he comes back.

Coleman for me. Clyne is one of those players who's obviously rated very highly for a reason, and I know I'm wrong, but I've yet to see him play well enough for me to think wow, we could do with that!

Coleman isn't flawless, and we'd probably be buying the 'almost' finished product, but everything I've seen from him this season tells me he'd be a great fit with better players around him. The fact he wouldn't have to move to a different part of the Country, and is old enough to deal with the pressure of playing for Manchester United are two other factors maybe worth considering given our luck in transfers recently.

If money were no object then yea... Coleman, (along with Stones in a double signing) but Clyne looks the better bet this summer,
Clyne would be the dumbest person alive to sign a contract with southampton right now, he could earn twice as much here automatically on arrival.

Both Clyne and Coleman are overrated, and neither good enough for a top tier team.

I would like to see what LVG could do with Clyne, considering that he has made a one footed pony Valencia look half decent as right back this season. Shaw is already showing signs of why we paid so much for him!

Clyne is not good enough, even against Spurs the other day i thought le looked average. I dont know what he brings to the table, something that really stands out. He is average in every aspect compared to other and what is required in that position. Coleman is better, but still not what i want defensively. Darmian is perfect in every sense, he would be cheaper than the other 2.

Clyne will be a shrewd buy in my opinion.

He is young, British and good value. He has room to improve and would walk straight into our first team improving it.

Having someone who actually understands how to defend and the offside trap will work wonders. Valencia has been at the base of a lot of goals conceded, whether directly or indirectly.
