We desperately need a right back

I am now back to hoping Rafael will get a shot and win over Van Gaal (or convince him to retire?) and we'll just buy an FB to cover both sides like Chelsea have with Azpilicueta. Darmian is just sitting there at a non-CL club in fecking Italy making 10K a week, and he's played both sides. Clyne has too and I'm sure some other decent footballers.

I don't. Im sick of Rafael TBH. He's injury prone and too rash into tackles. In my opinion we should get both Darmian and Clyne (the former would probably cost peanuts). They are two consistent performers who can play both as RB and LB. That would give us cover and quality.

How about Luis Adriano? I believe his future at Barcelona is far from certain, and he can play RB and LB equally comfortably. I know Barca have a transfer ban but I reckon he could be acquired for cheap.

I would be surprised if Clyne is our only option. Fabinho in Monaco is, for instance, an interesting player. Had an impressive year in Monaco, and at 21 he certainly has several good years ahead of him. Would not say that he is a worse prospect than Danilo was two years ago.

Luis Adriano is the striker from Shaktar isn't it? The 31 year old leftback Adriano from Barcelona is left footed so not an option for van Gaal at rightback.

The 31 year-old 'left-back' from Barcelona is also Luis Adriano I believe, and is about as two-footed as any footballer can get. He plays both right and left back for Barca, and at his age, can provide good experienced cover.

I thought his name was just Adriano, and Luis Adriano was the striker from Shaktar. Doesn't matter anyways.

I've seen a bit of him, but if van Gaal is after a 31 year old fullback from Barcelona I think we'd get someone different because of his preferred foot. There has to be a better option than a fullback past his prime though, we don't need experience behind Valencia. We need a real talent/finished product.

I honestly dont think we have as bigger issue as we are making out. The desperation came from the opinion that we couldnt trust Antonio as back up but surely thats changed now. Louis owes it to himself to give Rafael a chance to re establish his status as our first choice RB, the frustration with his injury record rather than his abilities has led us here. If the guy can get his mojo back and knowing that we have an able back up in Valencia should surely lead to no need for a new RB.

I'm firmly in the ABC group this summer. Anyone but Clyne. Looks completely average and I refuse to believe he's the best right back we can get. There's 6 billion people in the world it doesn't make sense.

Basta at Lazio was absolutely outstanding tonight, don't know if he's generally good though.

Carvajal has got to be worth a cheeky bid. He's automatically second choice next year after they splunked over 30 million on a player in his position, and is definitely better than Clyne or Coleman.

Marcelo did not lose his place to 35 million Coentrao. Carvajal losing his spot is far from a guarantee.

We should sign that Brazilian, whats his name? Yeah Rafael Da Silva. I like him.

Basta has same issue like Kolarov,he is way better WB then RB but think he is better RB then Kolarov is LB imo.

Rafael is the future, he just needs more luck with his injuries.

He hasn't been injured for 2 months anyway, he has been playing reserve football fine and looking great. He just needs a chance in the team again, but Valencia has been quite consistent.

I think so too, and he's 24! next season we will play more games, he will get a chance and prove himself to be a better option than 7/10 Valencia..

Exactly. Why pay £30 odd million for another player who is not guaranteed to be better?. We've got a great lad who fits in well with the squad, and clearly is a good player who loves it here. As Fergie said sometimes the cows in the field aren't always better etc...

Right or not, it doesn't seem like LVG agrees that Rafael is as good as the caf thinks he is. We have to assume that he will be sold at this stage.

I don't think Valencia is good enough to be first choice in that position either. Next year we'll be stepping up yet another level as we'll be playing the best teams in Europe and looking to win the league. I worry he'll be exposed.

Not mad on Clyne either though....

I certainly admire the optimism but I think Rafael's days here are numbered unfortunately.

why this thinking, Januzaj doesn't play, does he think he's not good enough? Shaw doesn't play does he think he's not good enough? It took him some time to be convinced by Herrera that he belongs to the first team and should start every game... Injuries to RVP, Carrick, Shaw, Rojo - everyone was shifted to different spots, Blind to LB, Rooney upfront etc - really helped Herrera to get a proper chance.

In this season we don't have enough games to give everyone minutes he needs. Rafael picked injury at the wrong time when Valencia found his some kind of form. He was solid since that and stayed fit so despite Rafael being better player Van Gaal left Valencia there because he didn't want to change the back four which was hitting form overall and started to work as unit again. It is always riskier to rotate fullbacks than wingers also fullbacks doesn't usually change game as much as other attacking options and VG doesn't rate Rafael that much higher than Valencia to feel it's worth taking risk to change the back four till the end of the season. That doesn't mean that he doesn't rate him at all by no means.

He will get games next season as well as Januzaj, Shaw and others

And stop this with Clyne he's not even an improvement on Valencia.. At first I thought he would be good back up for RB and LB but we are all sorted with Shaw, Blind, Rojo, Young as LBs and Rafael, Valencia, Young on the right

The big difference with Shaw and Januzaj is that they are young and relatively in experienced players, and therefore are unlikely to start every week. Rafael has bags of games under his belt at the top level, yet Van Gaal picks a right winger at full back instead - despite him looking average in terms of defending for the most part. I think that tells you all you n eed to know about where Van Gaal rates Rafael.

If he wants to play regulary then he'd be wise to look elsewhere.

I like Clyne - looks like he has it in him to step up a gear. We need a player who can defend and he can do that, as well as someone with the ability to get forward. He's young so in a good side should improve, plus we'd be getting a player with plenty of PL experience.

Coleman would be the best option for me as he's the more finished article, but he'd likely cost a bit more.

Wait, are there people who still think Rafael might be our player next season? That's surprising.

Carvajal is a fantastic rightback, he impresses me every time I see him play. We should fight for him if there's any chance he's for sale. But IMO that's not happening.

Can Contrao play RB?

Nope, not in the same way Azpilecueta or Lahm can play both positions at least. Very rare that left footers can play both actually, I would think because there's rarely, if ever, any need for them to cover the opposite flank at youth level.

A few posts above mine seem to feel he's in the middle of the process Ander went through.

The only way I could see us getting Carvajal is if he was part of a deal for De Gea, given Real have just paid $30M for Danilo I could see them being willing to sacrifice Carvajal to get Dave.

Far from convinced on Clyne myself. Good player who'd be an excellent squad option but I don't see him forcing his way into the first team. I do like Coleman though and think he'd be a good signing.

Having said that, given the way Valencia has grown into the role I don't see this position being as desperate as it once was. Particularly if Rafael can keep himself fit and give us another option.

Fabinho (Monaco/Rio Ave) or Mario Fernandes (CSKA) might also be decent options... I imagine either Coleman or Clyne would cost us absolute fortunes.

Clyne has 1 year left on his contract, relatively speaking he won't cost much for an English player.

Are there any supporters from Belgium here? How good is Thomas Meunier, would he be ready (even if it's as 2nd fiddle to Valencia in his first year)? The guy is huge and I've heard some good things about him. Haven't seen enough of him personally though.

Next season, next season, there's always next season. For our Rafael.

He would be a good back-up option to have, not ready to be a starter yet though. Premier League is a huge upgrade compared to the Jupiler Pro League.

He's 1,90m and has great stamina to run down the flank, or that's what I've been told. Sounds perfect for the PL, but indeed it'll be a gamble. I don't know how his crossing/positioning or defending is. I've seen 3 matches of him and was impressed though, is only 23 still.

With Valencia we'd have a good player while he could settle in to English life. If he's ready ofcourse, know too little about him.

I think Rafael is one of the best RB's in the league when he's playing...but the problem is when we need him most his fitness lets him down. As much as I like Raf, he is too undependable to even be a backup RB. He should and is most likely moving on.
