I couldn't have played the 74 versions with Beckenbauer 74 and I thought 78 Krol gave me a little more flexibility. It was a tough choice between those two (I never really considered Passarella) but @BeforeKeanetherewasRobson had me thinking I was misisng something obvious

Yeah you can only really manage it if you've got breaks I feel. Otherwise you'd have to sacrifice a pick midway through the drafting order which wouldn't make much sense.
