If Sam really said play and go where you like and Rooney decided he would sit alongside and sometimes deeper than Dier then we have a real concern.

He should want to play up where he plays for club and be amongst the thick of it and within goal scoring range almost all the time.

Particularly against a team as insipid as Slovakia, even just one of Dier or Henderson would be capable of doing the deeper work.

Perhaps it shows he is low on confidence and doesn't really feel comfortable at 10 in tighter situations. I wish he would show a bit of the reckless aggression and forward ambition that used to take his talents up several gears.

There's no doubting that Rooney has declined in recent years to the point where he barely resembles the player he once was. Happens to all players but ultimately, the question is whether he can still contribute - I think he can as a squad player but his status as a first-choice player at United and England should have been downgraded long ago.

I always pose the question when thinking about declining players, whether (ignoring age, resale value etc) we would be interested in signing them if they were playing for another team...in Rooney's case, it has to be "no" and surely it's not going to be long until he is replaced in the first XI.

Agree with you, and I think it is bizarre to see the way our fans react to criticism of Rooney.

Manchester United has unceremoniously f'd off some massive legends. When Robbo left there wasn't even a goodbye. Sparky was dropped like a hot plate. Bruce was managed out sharpish. Line up the legends. When they outlived their best days Fergie cut them, fast. Keano didn't even get to make it to the end of the season!

Why are today's fans unwilling to take the same attitude to Rooney? Is he somehow different to the other legends Fergie managed out? Fergie was trying to manage him out three years ago!

He's capable of flashes of brilliance in and around the box, and unless he manages his body better that's all we can expect out of him. The ridiculous accommodation of him by Big Sam is baffling.

Glad Mourinho is not as in awe of Rooney as Big Sam.

Yep and I'm convinced he'll be dropped pre Christmas.

I may have posted this exact same bold prediction last year. And the year before that.

Fergie was going to sell him in his last season and then Moyes appeared out of nowhere, giving him a 5 years contract when we could have sold him to Chelsea for 30 million.

What a shitty situation we have gotten ourselves into.

If he still had it, I'm sure he'd show it.....its long gone mate!

Jose will still force him in the starting XI guys, there's little point in this debate. If he's still a guaranteed first XI player in November, we can kiss goodbye to our hopes of winning the league. We'll most likely lose on Saturday too. City will have him for breakfast and against such a team, we simply can't have someone like him who guarantees at least
4-5 turnovers of possession (conservative estimate) every 45 minutes.

Think I'm being dramatic? I said the same vis-a-vis Rooney and LVG's faith in him ultimately costing him his job, and I was proved right there as well.

Can't believe Sam said that. Reading comments elsewhere, fans aren't impressed at all. How can I manager admit that in public?

I'm not even mad anymore. Just resignation. I've accepted it and I think others should.

He does in flashes.

I really think he's played too many positions for his own good. I think he wants to play deeper and maybe even he doesn't think he has the legs or touch for 10.

It's seems everybody has an agenda now. Rooney is trending on Twitter. Too many haters for my liking.

That's not the right question, it's whether he can contribute to the team more than anyone else available, it's a resounding no.

Rooney's responsiblity wasn't to score or assist today and that was left to the attackers. Rooney did his job of providing them and keeping the game ticking. The attack was awful for most of the game.
My god you are besotted aren't you?

Rooneys job is always to score or assist. He's not bloody pirlo. He didn't dictate play or keep things ticking at all. He was completely pointless out there today.

I just don't understand what these so called pro level managers see? How can so many people see it who aren't top level managers.

It's a shame England didn't draw that game, as it's all been swept under the rug now.

He perhaps doesn't have a "clause" but his power as an individual is far far superior to his talent these days. It's quite amazing that they are building a team around him.

If Sam truly gave Rooney a free role, it's pretty indicative that he no longer feels like a goal scorer. He spent more time closer to the back 4 than the striker!

Well he doesn't have a contract with England so obviously that couldn't be the case.

I think Rooney in his head feels like he could become a classy continental midfielder, its not playing to his strengths though, he should go stand in the final third and shoot constantly.

My favourite part is, 'we aren't going to make a big deal about this, are we?' As though giving a player absolutely free reign to do whatever the feck he wants is a normal thing.

I think he knows he can only do it in flashes and that's why he drops deeper to conserve his legs for the one or two times per match he thinks he can pull it off, waiting for a chance to turn it on that never presents itself because of where he has taken himself and his struggles at getting the ball under control quick enough.

We've gone from "But he contributes with goals and assists!" to "But he contributes good-looking passes to players in offside positions!".

How many straws are left to clutch at this point?

I know right? Desperate stuff:lol:

You are supposed to use speech marks when quoting something someone has said. Nobody has said that.

"What a ball from Rooney!! That's what he does that others don't!"

Consider it paraphrasing.

He made a good pass so someone commented on it, he wasn't commenting on how well his game went or saying he should stay in the team or anything like that. I think you have become obsessed with the whole anti-rooney thing if when someone comments on a decent pass you can't just leave it at that, it has to be a whole thing.

Make up your mind, do you want to see good passes and plays or do you want to see assists and goals? Both are happening.

Really?

Yeah, he made a good pass, a few people said good pass. The anti-rooney brigade realised they haven't commented on how he shouldn't be in the team in almost 3 hours so jumped on it. Even though it just makes you guys look ridiculous as the comments weren't about performance or anything along those lines.

That is why I want him to play. Guy can rip up a defense in a single pass/moment.
Yet again though shaman. 1 pass in 90 minutes? Is that really enough??? If he can do it regularly and plentifully then fine that's great. The fact is they sat off him and gave him so much room. With room he can do stuff like that, but any half decent team won't give him his room. I guarantee Fernandinho will be glued to him in the derby.

Well I will be honest and say I didn't watch England play but for me he did more in the Hull game than just 1 pass or 1 assist. of the top of my head I can count 3-4 very good balls. Let's see how it goes in the derby but mark my words, if he scores or gets an assist there will be people pointing out when he lost the ball in the 54th minute.

That anti Rooney brigade has taken over twitter, and every pub, and every forum. Maybe, just maybe, there's a smidgen of truth in it? You ever consider that?

Lets see how he does when he has Mkhitaryan and Rashford playing of Ibra because those two offer lots of movement. It seems to me that Rooney gets blamed for passing square when no players are moving in front of him.
