Strange comments from Big Sam saying Rooney just plays wherever he wants.
But what does it mean exactly? Was he suppose to play as a 10 or in midfield? I'm completely confused tbh

What on earth? His starting position was the key position for contributing directly to goals or assists.

'keeping the game ticking' - are we only going to talk in lazy cliches?
This is my favourite of excuses,

It translates to 'I can't think if a reason to justify my opinion so I'll use something that can't be disproven.

Allardyce before the game:

"I want Wayne to score or assist."
:lol::lol:

First half he played on the left side of a three man midfield.

The majority of the second half he played on the left side of a two man midfield.

Ok, so he's playing in midfield then. Sorry, thought it was as a No.10 and then switched to midfield. Got confused with what Sam said and then Rooney's comment.

He was ok when Slovakia went down to 10 men and he had lots of space to play in, but before that he was crap and it's telling that most of the post-match was about how to fit him in to the system, that is never how it should be and this is the problem for England and United.

Sam Allerdyce - 'Wayne controlled the game, controlled midfield.. I trust him'

The delusion of these 'big name' managers & experts

Sam's took his kool aid.

So basically, for those who keep defending Rooney, the expectation is more or less 'be on the pitch' and they'll claim it was a completely normal and OK performance.

To be fair I don't think anyone defends Rooney nowadays. Apart from his media mates anyway

You know that confidence I was feeling for the City match? It went when I remembered Rooney will be our #10 :(

so in the interview before kick off Sam said he wouldn't be a midfielder

He plays from deep, he plays up front
Wayne Rooney makes Fat Sam - look like a cnut.

Have noticed a trend lately with commentators being more vocal about him. Even some English ones I think.

I genuinely think that the bubble is about to burst, and the only guy who doesn't realize how far he has fallen yet is himself. Not even his old MUFC chummies in Scholes, Neville or Rio will be able to keep it up anymore.

Not sure about that. I think he knows himself deep down, because he has become increasingly defensive recently.

Rooney improving when the opposition were down to 10 men seems incredibly unsurprising. It highlights what I've felt recently; he's still got some ability there, but his physical game has declined to the point where he's slow, lethargic and isn't quick enough to react in high paced games where teams pressure him.

A team going on a man down naturally benefits Rooney in that it gives him more time and space to operate. Problem is, it's not something players tend to get all that often at the top level and even if Rooney's still got some ability, it's not enough when he's too slow as a footballer now.

This. When given space he's alright. The problem is that he has become a lot slower at getting the ball under control and in a position to do something with it. The process of trapping the ball, turning, looking up, then releasing now seems to take him far too long, which is why he looks good when given time and why he has been caught in possession so often when teams don't afford him this time.

Sam Allardyce admits Wayne Rooney was allowed to play “wherever he wanted” in England’s 1-0 victory over Slovakia.

Despite being named as the No.10, Rooney often dropped deep, stifling England’s attack at times.

When asked about his position, the England captain told ITV: “That’s where Sam wanted me to play. We worked on it through the week.

“When the team was announced a lot of people thought I was going to play higher, but it suits me.”

However, when asked where Rooney fits in his team, Allardyce then appeared to contradict the player.

“Today Wayne played wherever he wanted to. He was brilliant and controlled midfield. I can’t stop Wayne playing there.

“We aren’t going to make a big deal about it, are we? It’s one players position.”

Agenda against Diana Ross! Next you'll be wishing injury on her and calling her vile names like all the other Diana Ross haters.
SAF was planning to get rid of her!1!!
Or maybe that was Mrs SAF...

He skirted the action doing lazy passes sidewards and backwards, with the occasional punt.
If he's going to stroll about as if his bootlaces are tied together, maybe we should make him wear longer laces.

I think this is the first time a manager has confirmed the influence Rooney has. While I've never agreed with those who believe he has a clause in his contract it's now clear informally Rooney has a big say over his own role.

Thinking about it, it's actually an incredible statement to make.

The people who believe he has a clause are idiots. Rooney is the only player in the England squad to have ever been at world class level at some stage, not surprising big sam will bend over backwards to make him happy.

There's no doubting that Rooney has declined in recent years to the point where he barely resembles the player he once was. Happens to all players but ultimately, the question is whether he can still contribute - I think he can as a squad player but his status as a first-choice player at United and England should have been downgraded long ago.

I always pose the question when thinking about declining players, whether (ignoring age, resale value etc) we would be interested in signing them if they were playing for another team...in Rooney's case, it has to be "no" and surely it's not going to be long until he is replaced in the first XI.

It really makes me seethe. He has been putting in atrocious performances for years now. Years. He was one of the worst players on the pitch for the entire first half of last season. And now it has basically been confirmed that he will be a mainstay in the England team until after the Russia world cup no matter what happens. It's incredible...

English football has some deep rooted problems and this just exemplifies everything that is wrong with the current setup.

Rooney was a very good player at one stage, but not now. Why would you bend over backwards to keep a has-been in the team, it's going to get you nowhere!

He perhaps doesn't have a "clause" but his power as an individual is far far superior to his talent these days. It's quite amazing that they are building a team around him.

If Sam truly gave Rooney a free role, it's pretty indicative that he no longer feels like a goal scorer. He spent more time closer to the back 4 than the striker!
