That time is last season, but hey.. Clean slate for everyone bar memphis
I agree that every one needs a clean slate but when you clean the same slate over and over and over the duster will eventually wear off, bruise the slate and just fall through it.

I think it speaks volumes that almost every "supporter" of Rooney on here agrees that he has declined and had a bad season last year but every hater thinks he is completely finished. Shows the objectivity.

So pretty much nobody sees him as playing brilliantly. It's either he is Average/good, or he is utter dross. Let's just take the average of the distribution of all opinions, and we well end up with a view close to a 4-5 rated player. Clearly not good enough to be MUFC captain and the central playmaker. Come on, we need to honor the club and the badge, not live in the past and remain loyal to a has-been!

I agree completely and I'm not giving Rooney the credit for our improved attacking play once Mkhitaryan and Rashford came on.

My points are:
1) Rooney looked better the wider he played
2) Mkhitaryan improved the level of all the players around him when he played through the middle.

Both those points tell me that Mkhitaryan should be the #10 instead of Rooney, and that if Rooney plays, he will play to his strenghts more and expose his weaknesses less as a winger. He shouldn't be in the #10 discussion at all because he's isn't a good #10.

This may be the case, but this is not an accurate way to judge things.

I could argue that it was easier for Mkhitaryan to have an influence on the game when he come on because Hull were on the last legs.

I'm not saying this is the case; however, like I said, it's not a very good way of judging players.

It's like saying Rashford should be starting at 9 because he was a lot of better Ibra when he come on.

He should be phased out of our team, if not thrown out. Obviously Jose will want to make it in the way of not making too much fuss about it, if possible.

I put on the game in the 2nd half just to see what the hate was for. He had a perfectly normal game. Good enough in CM and kept the game ticking and putting in some nice forward balls a couple of times. Not sure what more people were expecting. Kane and co were far far worse.

Thank heavens mourinho realises he's a shite midfielder

Excuse my ignorance, watched just 20 last minutes of the game. Did he play as a CM? Who played behind the striker?

He was better in the second half but was positionally every where and just as shit as usual in the first, they were slagging him off at half time in the studio and he must have been told to play and stay further up by Sam at half time instead of getting in people's way.

That doesn't happen too often.

Can't comment on the first half but he did his job in the 2nd. I'm guessing he'll get hammered for it though since there's no goal or assist to save him.

A perfectly normal game? What does that even mean?

Followed by the obligatory attention switch to other players. It's the Rooney thread!!

Poor first half, decent 2nd half.

Felt he looked a lot better as a deeper midfielder, in a 4231, but Slovakia did have 10 men so it's hard to judge, but he did what he had to do, and supplied the front four pretty well.

Sam Allerdyce - 'Wayne controlled the game, controlled midfield.. I trust him'

The delusion of these 'big name' managers & experts

That doesn't happen too often.

Have noticed a trend lately with commentators being more vocal about him. Even some English ones I think.

I genuinely think that the bubble is about to burst, and the only guy who doesn't realize how far he has fallen yet is himself. Not even his old MUFC chummies in Scholes, Neville or Rio will be able to keep it up anymore.

Thought he looked better once he had Alli in front of him because he offered movement. The pass to Walcott was another example. The run made the pass possible.

I doubt it as he was better but obviously not a captains performance so could have done a lot better but he was shite in the first half.

So umm, does Rooney's England contract also make it obligatory for him to play every game like it does at club level?

To be fair, a good manager will never say a player was awful (I don't think he was) to the media. That's something to be discussed behind closed doors.

Rooney improving when the opposition were down to 10 men seems incredibly unsurprising. It highlights what I've felt recently; he's still got some ability there, but his physical game has declined to the point where he's slow, lethargic and isn't quick enough to react in high paced games where teams pressure him.

A team going on a man down naturally benefits Rooney in that it gives him more time and space to operate. Problem is, it's not something players tend to get all that often at the top level and even if Rooney's still got some ability, it's not enough when he's too slow as a footballer now.

Strange comments from Big Sam saying Rooney just plays wherever he wants.

He controlled the game, quite easy to see why he starts for England. I guess because he isnt on 300k a week for Englsnd the haters cant hate on his wage for country. Best offensive player today.

Rooney's responsiblity wasn't to score or assist today and that was left to the attackers. Rooney did his job of providing them and keeping the game ticking. The attack was awful for most of the game.

So you are bitching about what others have said when you didn't even see the first half?

What on earth? His starting position was the key position for contributing directly to goals or assists.

'keeping the game ticking' - are we only going to talk in lazy cliches?

He played really deep all of the second half and he did his job. He wasn't spectacular, he wasn't bad.

Played out of position, was bad in first, fine in second. Not exactly the best preparation ahead of the derby.

He was really poor until he moved deep and got away from pressure and people want him to start against a Guardiola team...

If he does start he's going to get slaughtered by City.
