Better how?

He was starting matches earlier in the season and was fit as a fiddle but the performances were this poor.

I love this hypothetical Rooney defences where he would perform better if x or y were different. In the past when he was a regular, the go to card was to talk about a change in position.

I wouldn't waste your time mate. He attempted the human centipede with Rooney but accidentally got his head lodged up there instead.

We let him on to run to the referee and have a go at him. I really hoped that he'd at least punch Dean instead of this silly gobbing. Would do us all a favour in all sort of directions.

Better how?
Playing him for 60 minutes as opposed to bringing him into a shambles of a game with 20 minutes to go. It seems kind of pointless to me to bring him off the bench, but he is obviously not match fit after his injury layoff so it would be frivolous to assume he would be rushed back.

Agreed, never had enough time to really influence the game, certainly not to blame for the mediocrity.

He should have started instead of Rashford playing no 10, with Martial at no 9. I think abit more maturity would have helped us open them up.
No no no no no no. Rooney should now absolutely never under any circumstances start games ever. I'd rather start with 9 men than see him start. He should never even be on the bench. Finished in every single way

I wasn't even annoyed at his showing as I know what he adds to the team when playing, which is nothing. So I expected nothing. Just waiting patiently for the summer so that we can be done with the burden that is, sadly, Wayne Rooney.

Wayne is our grumpy old man.

Genuine question here. How would maturity have helped break down 10 men behind the ball?

I presume he means that with Wayne's experience he would have more tricks of the trade to deal with them. Problem with Wayne is the mind might be willing, but the body isn't any longer.

The fact that he's captain and highest payed players sum up how this club has been broken for a while.

The irony is the he looked to have the least 'maturity' of any player on the pitch with his tantrums.

I feel like he's trying to show everyone that he has the old-fashioned aggression and bite that the young kids and foreigners don't have anymore. Reminiscent of Stevie Me and his red card at Juanfield etc.

The idea that Wayne has maturity or useful leadership qualities is way off the mark IMO.

To be fair to Rooney, we had nothing else attacking wise on the bench and we never looked like scoring so it was worth gambling with Rooney in the hope he can squeeze one little bit of magic that he may have left. But he never, because fact is he is completely finished at the top level. I think he knows it aswell. He can't say people have been harsh on him either, as he has been given 18 months free ride from both this club and the press. But time is up now Wayne.

I loved Rooney at his peak but he can't stay around after this season.

Rooney should have come on for Carrick yesterday with a licence to get further forward.

Why didn't he take that freekick that Rashford took? The last decent thing he did for us was score a freekick and he's still decent at them at least. You'd think he'd be looking to have a go from there. Not that Rashford's was a bad effort or anything, just weird that Rooney didn't take it.

To me it emphasises how bad we were if some people think we'd have been better off with Rooney playing 90 minutes.

I'd be perfectly content if that was the last I saw of him in a United shirt.

It looks like Schweini's passed the baton to Rooney in relay OT dumping race. Wonder who's next in line.

He'll play 90 against Palace for certain.
That'll be his send off, when we'll have comfortably missed top 4 by then

This makes absolutely zero sense, but you've randomly blurted it out anyway for some reason.

How so? We could receive the same level of service from Frank down your local boozer... for a free pint.

Rooney is basically a mascot at this stage.

I'm not one to throw around accusations but I've never seen Rooney, Ashley and Savage in the same room.

Of course it makes no sense to you.
It makes no sense at all in general. The three aspects of a single player wage, the captaincy and hierarchical wellness-state of the club aren't intrinsically linked at all.

You're essentially saying one of our most experienced players, who has won the most trophies and scored the most (a record) amount of goals in his time at the club being the highest paid player is essentially the summation of why our club is broken. How is this even in the realm of reality?

I get the captaincy thing, I don't really think he's captaincy material but there are obviously plenty within the constructs of the club that do. They make the decisions.
Taking a vastly out of context snapshot of a minute aspect of player confidence and attempting to guise it as the summation of failure is, quite frankly, delusional.

You're just saying it for a bit of attention and it makes zero sense.

Please mention another club paying a squad player whose clearly way down the road of decline 300k a week?

What does this have to do with what @Adisa said?

No player bigger than the club...This is the magic word taught by Sir Alex...
Players will come and go in many ways...retired, being sold, or even by mutual agreement of contract termination...that's the nature of Football...
It is ok being nostalgic, but to face the future what most needed is being logic...

Wayne Rooney contribution to the club is no need to be questioned, but as the human being, specifically as Professional Football Player, sooner or later he will regress...
Sadly for Rooney, while in his regression time, he's hardly to do much altering his style and ability in Football...
And all of us can see what kind of player he is now...
Blunt and Slow as an attacker, Brainless and Unskillful as a Midfielder (pardon my opinion).

So it depends on People at the Club, what will they do in this current situation...Sacrificing the players which has been a symbol and for some people a legend to the club for future rebuild of the club (by selling or even cut loss by mutual termination contract) or Accepting the way he is and all his remaining attributes now...

My stupid personal opinion says we need to open the door to Wayne to go...his time playing for Man Utd is enough...

It's hardly a stupid opinion, he offers very little now and is on extremely high wages. His spot in the squad could be given to a youngster who could get some minutes here and there. He should get his testimonial, get a good sending off at the end of the season and should move to another club where he could get some playing time.

Didn't he already get one last summer? Weird if he is to have 2

What is this obsession with getting youngsters minutes? We need to give those minutes to a sub who can come on and change the game. Blooding youngsters when we are struggling to score like we are seems like madness. Would much rather a seasoned pro like a Hernandez or an Ole was on the bench to throw on right now. Give the youngsters minutes when the team is winning again.

It's obviously situational, I'm not suggesting we throw them on in a game we are desperately trying to win, but bringing Rooney on in similar circumstances wouldn't fill me with confidence either. Give the youngters the chance in games that are finished, in games that we should be easily winning in cup competitions etc.

Im gonna say he will go to the US in the summer. Feels like the right time and the right move for him. Mourinho has handled this situation superbly.

Fair enough, I totally agree. My comment was probably a more general moan about peoples obsession with youth players in general than your post.
