The problem with Rooney doing nothing is that it often meant that he actively harmed the team with poor touches and bad decisions. And in his worst phase he had gone significantly down from 3 "telling" touches a game anyway.
I'd rather have Roo on the pitch snarling, cussing, giving as good as he takes, than have him decaying on the bench....
Huge credit to him for proving so many who've posted on here the past couple of years that they know even less about what talent and ability is than they know about formations, tactics and square pegs in round holes.

He has to produce this kind of performance on a weekly basis. And he hasn't managed that for many, many years.

Really like the current Rooney. I like that he's improving as thr season goes on. If he ever reaches even 60-70% of his peak, he'd be the best player in the league

Spending time on that bench is what contributed to him gaining some form. It's like he realized (just like he always should have) that he isn't guaranteed a starting place anymore and has to work for it.

LvG had him playing a stupid amount of games, he probably got more rest as a 24 year old.
He was playing badly, now he's playing well. People who pointed out that he was playing badly before haven't become retrospectively wrong.
Agreed(ish)....He hasn't played as well as he should have / could have the past couple of years, but I blame Moyes and Van Gaal far more than I blame Rooney.
RVP, Chicharito, and Rooney all looked awful in the strikers role while these two were in charge...Even Ibrahimovic has looked poor when JM has set up defensively - Liverpool, Chelsea etc. And Martial looked much, much better when switched to LW during the second half of last year....
Tactics, not the players, have been the problem for our strikers far more than Rooney's perceived loss of form....
He was unfit, unmotivated and complacent. Fair play he's turned it around these last few matches, let's hope it continues.

I remember players being afraid of him, because they knew that if they dispossessed him he'd come after them like a mad man.

I did not mean the defeat itself, sorry on a second read it does looks like i am blaming him for it. But i meant that him not making the starting line-up is his fault. After a couple of good games i think he might have been expecting to return to the starting line-up in PL and Jose i think this time would have picked him, but Rooney was disqualified and because of mostly stupid, worthless yellow cars.
He will get a chance vs Spurs. They are much better than Wham though. That would be a good opportunity to show that he's regaining form.
I like Rooney who picks up yellow cards. More aggressive and more lively. And also remind me of the old Rooney. We are pretty much have good options there, so missing Rooney for one game but he can still play like this shouldn't be a big problem if only we don't sit back and defend a 1-0 lead like tonight.
Well it's obvious for most of the fans apart from usual overzealous rooney haters that Wayne actually was quite good in the last games and he provided the needed coherence for our attacking unit that we severely lacked today.
If you ask would we have better chances of winning today's game with Rooney in his current form on the pitch i think most of reasonable fans would have answered yes.
I like him too, if it's yellow cards for tackling and stuff. YC for shouting at ref are stupid. Well, yes, a one or two is okay, it is a by-product or a result of aggression. But he had way too many "frivolous" booking in my opinion.

I actually like the fact that Rooney got a yellow card because of him shouting. Like I already said the old Rooney did the same thing back then shouting to referee a lot and if that's the best way to get him being in a top level performance then I have no complaints at all. If we are not happy with our attacking game why didn't we change it? We got plenty options on the bench there for fresh legs Mata, Lingard, Rashford. And it's not like these three players work rate are poor as well.

A confident Rooney is a beast. Like when he used to try chipping keepers. He is too calm and not adventurous over the last 2 years. Lately he has been playing with way more swagger and it has worked.

Missed him today. Links better with the front 3 than Pogba and Herrera.
He'll play midweek but I don't know who he'll start instead of vs Spurs. He deserves a spot but it looks like Martial and Mkhi will play for now so that leaves one of the 3 mids to be dropped.
We need to play the same team as against West Ham in the cup. We keep thrashing teams in the cup then making changes in the next match. There is no logic to it unless obviously a player is suspended. Don't think there's any suspensions for the next league match so it has to be done. Then again Pogba will never be dropped so it won't happen.
Exactly Pogba definitely comes in so for Rooney to play Herrera or Carrick will have to sit it out.
But it is not the cup, it's the league, and it's not a weakened Wham side but Spurs who are a different class to Wham.
