I suppose we'll see how we do without him tomorrow.

Most likely we wont because there is a big possibility that we will play without all starters bar one of the starting centerbacks...

Maybe but it will still be interesting to see what team Mou puts out and if he plays someone else in the no10 role. Mata might go in

Can look forward to his most influential performance in ages on Thursday.

Hope it's the beginning of his new position for Utd.... sat on a sofa, watching it on a screen.

He doesn't exactly look worried about his United future:

Why would he look worried? He's earning millions for trying hard, showing a bit of passion, and making a few floating crosses per game. Not a bad living if you can get it.

"Wayne, I wish you would just give me those photos you have"

"heh not yet boss, still 3 years on me contract"

Mourinho is sending a message to Wayne Rooney, Henrik Mkhitaryan et Jesse Lingard. He did this stuff at Real Madrid too. He used to "rest" the guys that he felt weren't playing up to par... basically saying that nobody is above getting benched.

The AM spot that Rooney plays is supposed to dominate the offensive side of the ball in terms of creating chances. As an example, Ozil was dishing 20+ assists at Madrid in that spot per season for Madrid.

You can't just be "OK" at this position for Mourinho's system. You have to be one the of best players on the pitch for his tactics to work.

You're reading too much into it.

Henrik is injured and out for 10 days.

TBH no way Wayne's old legs could play Sunday, Thursday then Sunday again. He said that Rashford will be playing weeks ago so it's no surprise. I am more surprised he's taken Ibra too.

The 35 year old is fitter than the 30 year old captain!

I really hope someone plays so well that Mourinho is pressured to drop Rooney.

And Shaw. And Valencia.

I think there's very plausible reasons why those two haven't travelled. Shaw's recent history, he was was also feeling something on Saturday. Valencia did a huge amount of travelling last week.

It could be that Rooney's just being rested but it's still a little odd to leave the captain at home.

Rashford hat-trick would do me

Mata with 3 assists from the #10 position as he slinks between the lines and links the midfield and attack with technical efficiency.

I hope it is a warning shot from Jose - not a perk. Mkhi is injured, Shaw and Valencia are probably seen as indispensible for the main 11 and are being wrapped in cotton wool. Meanwhile Jesse is probably being punished for Saturday.

I hope Rooney is being left out for the same reason rather than being seen as indispensable, maybe Jose is trying to provoke a reaction from him by way of either a good performance or a media tantrum that can set the wheels in motion for him to be benched.

Mourinho says he's resting him. There's nothing in this.
That said, it's funny he's resting Rooney but not Zlatan.

Rooney looks knackered at the end of every game. Ibrahimovic looks fit as a fiddle.

Am I the only one that thinks failure whenever I think of Rooney? He was by far the most talented teenager in football but never truly lived up to his potential for both club & country. He's never once been the best player in the League or come close to the Balon D'or & his International exploits are riddled with multiple failures in the actual tournaments despite his deceptive scoring stats which are inflated by friendlies & qualifiers against pub teams.

He had such an insanely brief peak that several people think he was best as a teenager & he was finished as an elite player at just 26 while the likes of Ronaldo (who was regarded as an inferior talent to Rooney at one point), Messi, Suarez, Higuain etc who are in his age group are still going strong in the latter stages of their career.

He probably was at least for one season though, let's not exaggerate.

Which year though? If you mean 09/10 then no. Drogba was superior since he got more goals & more assists that season. 29 goals to Rooney's 26. 10 assists to Rooney's 3.

Drogba was the clear cut best player with Lampard, Rooney & Fabregas just behind him.

Nothing surprising in Rooney being rested and not Zlatan. One played for his country and runs around a lot and spends a lot of energy as compared to the other.

Zlatan presses more than Rooney, Rooney does less pressing than most of our players for more than a year now, he spends most of the game telling others where to press like he is our manager and not the player. I am not sure some of you Rooney fanboys are even watching us play anymore.

Mata has better defensive stats than Rooney. Actually, Rooney is player with one of worst defensive stats in our team since start of the season, and he wasn't much better last season either. It's not like you need stats to prove it anyway, it's just enough to watch our games, but stats can help you admiting to yourself how bad he is in some parts of his game if you are in love with Rooney and refuse to see it.

"How the feck did you get Moyes to give you that 6 year contract?"

"Hehe I really pulled a fast one, didn't I?"

He is on 3 in 4 games so at this rate he could make 20+.

Unfair because stats do not show everything and he missed the last month of the season with injury. Drogba was fantastic but "clear cut best player" is the hyperbole of a Chelsea fan imo. Maybe he was the best, but you're making it out to be a bigger gulf than it was. Point being, Rooney clearly WAS one of the best players in Wngland over the course of 4-5 yeas. Whether he was THE best is academic and certainly no cause to suggest he was a failure - he contributed to 5 PL titles and a CL, for goodness sake

Imagine saying "Does anyone else think of Drogba and think failure?" That's basically what you're saying, and it would be equally ridiculous to say.

Shouting and gesticulating at referees
Giving the newer/meeker teammates a bollocking
And of course those butterfly floating crossfield balls

All these take up a lot of energy, don't you know? He deserves a rest! The lengthier, the better.

am surprised the anti Rooney brigade are not complaining yet on here about his performance against Feyenoord so far today.

He invisibility (by not playing) is allowing them to waltz through our defences.

F*cking Rooney.

Its obvious that Rooney isn't playing since we aren't losing the ball that much today.
