The team was setup to do well without him. Pogba got to start in a 3 man midfield where he's apparently brilliant and Mata, Rashford and Martial started which is what everyone started. Rooney is the one who holds this team back so why was this one of our worst peformance in 4 years?

Because there was no-one to set the passing tempo, because our fullbacks were technically poor and so our wingers can be double-marked, because this team haven't played much together, because Martial is in shit form, and everyone played poorly today, and because, as I said, it takes time for a team to gel and play well. Compare City v Sunderland to City yesterday. Actually with Martial playing so poorly it would make sense as a stopgap to have Rooney on the wing, and I would have zero problems with it.

He might be one of the problems but he's not even remotely close to being the problem like this thread would have you believe.
He's been one of the biggest problems for a while. A game without him playing is entirely irrelevant to the question of whether he's good enough.

I honestly think that there are some in this thread who will have wanted us to be crap tonight to use it in this thread.

He's never been the main problem.

The alternatives simply never step up(some aren't good enough really). So you see why managers play him. Rooney can be poor for the majority of a game, but he'll pop up with a goal or assist in crucial moments. Can't say the same for other players.

He'll be back in the team for Watford. And deservedly so(even if I want him out of the team).

You must have been asleep for the entirety of LVG and Moyes' reign if that was 'one of our worse performances in 4 years'.

I knew his Stan's would be out in force after that shambles, He's served up shite over and over but never gets dropped, 4 of these lads have not kicked a competitive ball this season and were playing in a system we haven't used, but that wasn't it, we missed Rooney, FFS. Lets give Rashford 15 games to find form like Rooney gets.

This was right up there with anything from those regimes. Did we even have a shot on target today? Under LvG we'd have a lot of possesion and no shots. Today we had no possession, no shots and an embarrassing inability to pass to teammates.

The two of them can easily play together.

The two of them can easily play together.

Only if we stick with the 4-2-3-1 garbage and Rashford is forced wide. I simply used Rashford as an example, my point was the lads playing tonight will rightly get shit but unlike Rooney who is very often as crap as any of them were tonight, they will be dropped immediately with no chance to play into form, where as Rooney can stink the place out on the regular and never even gets subbed unless it's the last couple of minutes and Jose is wasting time.

Nah, I'm sorry but that wasn't even close to being one of the worse performances in the last four years. Sometimes you have to take into the account the situation. 8 changes against a team who were very up for this game, away from home in Europe. Feyenoord are in good form, was never gonna be easy (I predicted a loss). What I do know is bumping this thread and proclaiming "I told you so" as far as Rooney is concerned is not the answer.

I only caught the last 15-20 mins and we had more shots that some entire games under LVG.

It might have been 8 changes but we had Mata, Martial, Rashford, Herrera and Pogba all play. We really should be doing far better.

Mourinho actually did him a favour resting him today with the type of football he wanted us to play.

So much for playing fluid attacking football without Rooney
God awful performance and a deserved loss

With this team, we wouldn't have done any better with Rooney in there. Players that were not match fit:
Schneiderlin, Rojo, Darmian.
Ashley Young, Memphis.

We also looked much better with Zlatan at number 9 than we did with Rashford there by himself. Rashford is very good, but he is not used to being triple teamed.
I would have liked to have seen Rashford & Ibra toguether.

I was thinking, if we won the game tonight, would some of you who defend Rooney would accept that he is not good enough to start? And to those who keep on bashing him, if we won, would you still say it is just 1 game and doesn't mean anything?

When has anyone ever said he was the only problem though? it hasn't happened.

We have players who aren't good enough and let us down frequently but that doesn't excuse the fact that Wayne Rooneys name is on the very same list in massive neon letters.

If we won and we had a good attacking display then his replacement would deserve to start at the weekend. It's really a bit of a myth that we play better football without Rooney. it didn't happen last year and it won't happen this year either. He and the rest of the team needs to improve a lot though.

This.
We'll play shite or average with or without him, but I always feel we have more of a chance to score when he plays.

Inept offensively with him, inept without him.
Even against City our only plan was basically: find Zlatan then... ???
The amount of abuse Rooney gets is incredible when he's only had one poor outing, against Hull so far.

Feck me. We didn't lose because Rooney didn't play.

We lost because we played too many players who are shite on the ball. Darmian, Rojo, Smalling and Schneiderlin all offered zero in possession.

After the loss, still happy for him to stay at home watching TV

Weird reasoning, so as long as Rooney is not playing you wouldn't mind to take a loss?

Agree with you, we do need the players to step up their game, not just Rooney.

I wouldn't say its irrelevant at all. We looked disjointed and our forward looked entirely isolated. Being disjointed and having an Isolated forward wasn't our problem in any of the games he played in.

That is the worst we have played this season by a mile. It was also the first time he has not played.

You must have missed the first half on Saturday.

We had an isolated forward because Rashford wasn't playing in tandem with the team and he's not Zlatan so he doesn't drop deep enough and clearly the tactics tonight were to drop deep.
We definitely looked disjointed on Saturday so again not sure if you saw, I'd also point out that today we had two abysmal full backs who literally offer nothing going forward and that obviously didn't help things especially as Mata and Martial work better with overlapping full backs.

Post hoc ergo propter hoc

I like the west wing as much as the next guy but that's not relevant here. The forward was isolated because nobody was covering the huge open space in between midfield and attack. Pogba doesn't look like he can bridge that gap.

It's entirely relevant, being crap tonight has nothing to do with Rooney not playing.

You can't point to a poor performance and say it's caused by a player not on the pitch, who has himself been shite for a long time.

We scored, had one cleared off the line after we managed to get out of our half so I would say it was significantly worse yes.

We were disjointed because the gap between midfield and the forward was about the length of the field. Yes I saw. I watched the game. The game was seen by me. We were against a much better team who parked us in for the majority of the first half then we looked good towards the end of the half and struggled to break them down in the second half but we were based about 20 yards further forward when we were trying than we were tonight. Not sure how you can accuse the full backs of offering nothing going forward and then not the two players in front of them. The guys who's job it is to do something there.

At least we actually looked like we were going to score on Saturday. Despite being poor, we could have easily drawn the game before half time. Tonight was just toothless.

We looked better in all the games he was on the pitch so yes you can. And the reason is pretty obvious too. He links midfield and attack, nobody did that tonight.

Mignolet is shite and if Liverpool dropped him played some third choice he conceded six and then they pointed out it was because they were missing their first choice keeper, it completely makes sense, its the same thing.

He played in the first half against City, which was just as bad. Must be Rooney's fault for us playing so shit.

This result could have nothing to do with the fact that a large portion of our squad tonight was our back-up squad and players playing their first minutes of the season and playing in a competition they probably don't give a feck about. Must be because our saviour Rooney wasn't on the pitch.

You're arguing a complete logical fallacy.

We scored because their clown goalkeeper couldn't catch a simple cross. And then we almost scored again because that same clown goalkeeper tried to play tiki taka in his area. We hardly battered city into submission with swash buckling football.
We spent most of the second half playing like Pulis Stoke 2009, unfortunately for us tonight we didnt have a goalkeeper trying to sabotage his team and we also had to make do with two absolutely shite full backs.
Full backs are critical to linking the play when you play with two deep midfielders and inside forwards, they were non existent tonight. Tonight didn't teach us that Rooney must return it taught us that Darmian and Rojo must never play again and also that Herrera-Schneiderlin-Pogba should contiue in midfield.

Tonight taught you that Schneiderlin Herrera and Pogba should continue in midfield? I'm not even going to bother.
