Virgil van Dijk | VVD throws a hissy fit

This guy is abit of a tit. No doubt Soton won't sell him to the dippers now. Chelsea or City come in for him for 50m and off he'll go i think

Anyway has he made a total recovery yet? Or the team that is buying him will have to wait another couple of months for his therapy or something like that

The huge prices are caused by players signing stupidly long contracts, could all be solved if they refused to sign anything but a 2 year deal if they have their eye on career progression.

Southampton should never do business with Liverpool again unless they make amends, this isn't the first time they've unsettled their players.

if you don't want your club to block your "ambition", then don't sign a new 6 year contract with no out-clause and don't get tapped up in Blackpool by the German guy. Simple.

I feel bad for Southampton fans. Constantly losing their best players, many of them to Liverpool ... and then one of their supposed leaders comes out and does this four days before the start of the season. Ouch.
I wouldn't feel so bad. Their model is excellent. They're not selling for free. Develop youth and buy untapped potential and sell for big fee. It's a brilliant operation and has established Southampton's status as a good PL side. Without these huge fees coming in Southampton wouldn't be where they are now.

Terrible timing from him, I quite want Klopp to come back in now after his 'I don't need another CB bullsh*t'

Jurgen 'ze contradiction' Klopp

Don't blame him for handing in a request at all really if the likes of Chelsea are interested. He won't get the chance again

He's a decent defender by any means but not as good as people make him out to be. With that being said, he'd be an upgrade on Lovren.

He is 26 and has only played in a decent league for a season and a half.

It's a sad reflection of the market that a player like that is going to go for £60mil+.

Not really anyway Liverpool can make amends though. Im sure both Southampton and Liverpool are in a decent position money wise where 7/8million extra on a transfer is going to massively impact the budget for the season so money wont do it realistically. A 'sincere' public apology from Liverpool (blatantly to avoid being reported for tapping up) will mean sod all if Liverpool end up signing him eventually anyway.

Liverpool should just forfeit both games against Southampton each season and that might help.

If this summer is anything to go by Liverpool will be sending unsolicited contract details via carrier pigeon, Chelsea will be twiddling their thumbs and City will be planning yet another world record fee for a defender.

Are Chelsea genuinely interested in him since they signed Rudiger?

They've got Azpi, Luiz & Cahill as starters anyway. Sure they could use some depth since they lost Zouma and Terry and one more defender would likely be needed, but would VVD break into the first XI or would he be a 50m backup? And do they need a 50m backup?

Personally I think flopp was putting the onus back on the player to force the issue with his comments about not needing another defender

Southampton are/were a stepping stone. They arent challenging for any meaningful trophy as things stand.

The player wanting to move to a bigger club makes total sense...
But then he shouldnt have signed that contract.. If southampton play hardball here, players might insist on a release clause in the future.

This guy sounds like a tit. Why'd he sign a contract extension then? I'd put him in the reserves and let him realise his ambitions there.

And piss away 60m? Not sure even your club can afford to do that.

Man City 'winning' the league means nothing. Same as when Chelsea have. It's like seeing an ugly old fat guy pull up in a Ferrari with a hot bird. He knows it, she knows it, and so does everyone else.

Ha- I'm going to use this exact expression when chatting with mates. absolutely right! they have completely lost their identity and couldn't be more fake.

The one thing that they can't buy is fans though which makes it especially funny seeing half empty stadiums on the telly (even against decent opposition)! Or when they can't fill allocations at Wembley. They will only ever be pretenders as far as I'm concerned.

That and also is he really going to come out 5 days before the season starts and say "I'm not happy with the centre backs that I've got and I'm desperate to get someone else in"? He's going to tell the media that he thinks what he's got is good enough because the players lining up have to beIieve that the manager has confidence in them

I think they should just make it standard that a release clause is in every contract and is simply the price of your remaining wages according to your contract length. VVD therefore would need a club to come in and offer 6 x his annual salary. Let's say he is on £50,000 pw, Liverpool could buy him out for £15,600,000 (annual salary x 6) which is a lot of money but we think is peanuts due to today's ridiculous market.

It stops clubs holding players to ransom, negates some of the power agents have and also stops all this back and forth about tapping up, negotiating fees and pointless journalism on the same story over and over again.

Hopefully would dramatically lower transfer fees and make more money available for other things.....like lowering ticket prices for once.

I don't rate him tbh but he would improve City and Liverpool such is the state of their defence so I hope Chelsea get him (they need him the least and he's arguably worse than what they've got already)

He signed a contract when there were no signs of interest from other clubs - makes sense if he was getting a decent wage rise. He now knows big clubs are interested so wants to leave. Nothing wrong with that. He told Southampton how he felt and according to his comments they told the press he refused to train which is something we won't ever know the truth of. He's probably got word of another big club being interested which is why the transfer request has come now and not earlier.

I can't remember the last time a club's put out an apology statement for a possible transfer like Liverpool did. Even with the transfer request (no loyalty bonus, easy to explain why they sold him for PR) I don't see him going to Liverpool. I think Chelsea/City are lurking.

And piss away 60m? Not sure even your club can afford to do that.
He will come begging to be back in the team soon enough. It's in his interest to keep performing or the next big thing is going to be grabbing all the buyers' attention.

Southampton holds all the cards here. At this stage, selling him isnt even all that good given how close is the start of the season and selling clubs will know they have a pretty penny on their hands.

According to his comments. Wow. Well done. Poor little mistreated Virgil. Why not look in the press to see SFC's words and where they are? Are you really that naive to think that when a player (or his agent) trot out complete and utter ballcox that masquerades as a statement, that he isn't trying to blow smoke up your posterior.

Funny really, how Saints have now become the sinners because they don't want to sell one of their players who signed a 6 year extension just last year. Apparently the reason, according to this statement, for the TR was because they intended (NB hasn't actually happened yet) to fine him 2 weeks wages and hadn't followed proper disciplinary protocol. Hadn't followed proper protocol. Is he really going to use that as an argument. Not using proper protocol. I guess that he and his agent are as thick as each other and the irony is lost on him.

As for refusing to train, the club have NEVER said that. The manager said that he wasn't 100% there so was training by himself. Would you disagree with that? I suspect that he was fined for either refusing to play games or more likely, refusing to do the meet & greet and photo shoot last week. But no, you believe the rather vociferous player rather than the rather silent club.

But this whole sorry saga rather demonstrates what is wrong with football. In fact I don't get upset at all with this sort of thing. I hate what football has become and each time that this sort of nonsense happens it pushes me closer to the edge where my love of Southampton is slowly but surely overtaken for my disdain for football as the business it now is and when I will not bother renewing my season ticket and just do something else with my time instead.

Funny how much can change in a year.

@Wessex Saint i never said I believed him. I stated we will never know the actual truth but wanting to leave to better himself isn't wrong. Same thing happened with us and Lukaku, didnt blame him for wanting to leave.

As for the rest of your post, I don't have a reply as you are inherently butt hurt that he doesn't want to be at your club. Boo hoo.

Lukaku didn't sign a six year contract with Everton last season. If he had, I imagine you'd feel a little differently.

Butt hurt?? Not in the slightest. I look on with an equanimity (you can look that up in a dictionary) borne out of a distaste for such numammorous acts (you can look that up as well). Apologies for being so grandiloquent (you might as well look that one up too)!!

You misspelled that.

In fact Lukaku declined a contract offer saying he didn't want to renew because he wanted to move to a bigger club and play in the CL. So he stayed on lower wages to ensure he would get his move. The complete opposite of what Van Dijk did basically

Let me be the first to off you my humble contrafibularities.

Who even talks like this?

Not really, if a big club came in for him and we got the right fee it would be fine.

Van Dijk in his statement is right, the life of a pro footballer is short so if he's getting a wage rise and a 6 year contract it's a no brainer as he has that guarantee under his belt no matter what happens.
