Virgil van Dijk | VVD throws a hissy fit

Not really, if a big club came in for him and we got the right fee it would be fine.

Van Dijk in his statement is right, the life of a pro footballer is short so if he's getting a wage rise and a 6 year contract it's a no brainer as he has that guarantee under his belt no matter what happens.
No one forced him to sign a six year contract. In fact, what player signs a six year contract in this day and age? It's normally three or four.

F*ck him, he has his own stupidity to blame. His behaviour is embarrassing.

Butt hurt?? Not in the slightest. I look on with an equanimity (you can look that up in a dictionary) borne out of a distaste for such numammorous acts (you can look that up as well). Apologies for being so grandiloquent (you might as well look that one up too)!!

I agree with you that he chose to sign a 6 year contract so the power is with the club in this case, but I don't feel like he is wrong for
A) Signing that and then wanting to leave - security of a 6 year contract is nice at the time and maybe there was no other interest from clubs. He could have had a poor season and no clubs would be interested, how are people to know without the fortune of hindsight?
And b) if a club like Chelsea is in for him he has a much greater chance of winning things than at Southampton. Fact.

A person who's crying in their room flicking a lighter on and off while staring at their 16/17 Van Dijk shirt.

He's not worth the fuss to be fair, I think he signed the contract because he wasn't guaranteed to get offers from a big 6 club this season, unlike Lukaku.

Personally I think he's overrated, he's just big and strong and can score goals, his actual defending isn't better than what Chelsea, United, Spurs or Arsenal have. City & Liverpool have terrible defenders so that's not really saying he's particularly good if he makes it into their squad.

I think Saints should charge 55-60m to 'Pool or City, and land somewhere within that region above £50m, they have the resources to invest that in highly rated youth players anyway.

I agree the security is nice but it demonstrates a shocking lack of foresight on his part. Three or four years is also fairly secure.

By handing in a transfer request he has forfeited a large sum of money in the form of a loyalty bonus, should he move. That should go some way towards redeeming himself to the saints fans, no? Either way Southampton fans can't be too mad, the same way Celtic can't be too mad for having the Saints nick their best players. It's the nature of the jungle. Ffs I knew this bullshit TV money would make these small clubs all jumped up.

This is obviously hypothetical, but say it Countinho tries to force a move to Barcelona in a similar way would you also have the same opinion on it?

If he's getting a wage rise and a 6 year contract that should mean, from the club's perspective, that he's not going to want to leave within the year after signing because some clubs want to buy him. They are perfectly in the right to ask for 50-60m and not listen to anything less than that without him getting pissed off about it. Sign a big contract, expect to be harder to buy.

We are not Southampton. Also I don't think Coutinho is as ballsy as VVD to pull that off. But even someone who was a bit of a bellend like Suarez left amicably so I can't see it happening with Coutinho.

You're also not Barcelona. VVD is their best player on paper much like Coutinho is yours, and he also recently signed a new contract and has come out and said he would be open to a move. I bet Barcelona fans feel similar about Coutinho in the same way you feel about VVD. I do agree though that you have a much better chance of keeping your player than Saints though, but it is interesting to see both sides of the food chain so to speak.

I was only being half serious in that post you quoted, I agree with your main points as well. I think the key difference between the two cases is that we have/or should have CL football to look forward to. I dread to think how this summer would have been if we had finished 5th.

Am I the only one who thinks he has handed in a transfer request because Chelsea are interested? Even if he wants to move to Liverpool he probably knows Southampton don't want to sell to us.

Chelsea coming into the picture has given him a realistic way out to a club that has Champions League football.

According to his comments. Wow. Well done. Poor little mistreated Virgil. Why not look in the press to see SFC's words and where they are? Are you really that naive to think that when a player (or his agent) trot out complete and utter ballcox that masquerades as a statement, that he isn't trying to blow smoke up your posterior.

Funny really, how Saints have now become the sinners because they don't want to sell one of their players who signed a 6 year extension just last year. Apparently the reason, according to this statement, for the TR was because they intended (NB hasn't actually happened yet) to fine him 2 weeks wages and hadn't followed proper disciplinary protocol. Hadn't followed proper protocol. Is he really going to use that as an argument. Not using proper protocol. I guess that he and his agent are as thick as each other and the irony is lost on him.

As for refusing to train, the club have NEVER said that. The manager said that he wasn't 100% there so was training by himself. Would you disagree with that? I suspect that he was fined for either refusing to play games or more likely, refusing to do the meet & greet and photo shoot last week. But no, you believe the rather vociferous player rather than the rather silent club.

But this whole sorry saga rather demonstrates what is wrong with football. In fact I don't get upset at all with this sort of thing. I hate what football has become and each time that this sort of nonsense happens it pushes me closer to the edge where my love of Southampton is slowly but surely overtaken for my disdain for football as the business it now is and when I will not bother renewing my season ticket and just do something else with my time instead.

Funny how much can change in a year.

That quote is pretty damming, but I'm pretty sure all of us have had relationships like that in the past at one point or the other. People are often obsessed with having some sort of control over their surroundings and working out probabilities of certain things happening, but when it comes to people you're beholden to the whims and emotions that make up a person.

It's the same here and in any walk of life you just cannot truly know what anyone is thinking underneath the surface. Anyways I'm hoping this means he's coming here and I hope this is the start of some investment in to the playing squad don't care how much we're going to have to pay. It's our own fault we backed ourselves in to a corner. Need a midfielder and a winger on top of this.

Loyalty level : Ramsey Bolton.

Bored with this transfer.
Same. I can't believe Klopp thinks we're fine as we are.

We've had no problem scoring goals since Rodgers became manager, but have always struggled defensively. Part of that issue has been the lack of quality in the back five.

I'm sure you're ecstatic about Phil moving to Barcelona.

Soton is under no real pressure here. Someone other than Pool bid good money and they sell him, otherwise season starts and he'll come crawling back begging to be played soon enough. The rift may heal by the end of next season or they sell him then for the same money with much more time to line up replacement.

It's funny to see Pool fans twisting themselves hoping they'd get him though. Soton's board would be hung drawn and quartered if they sell him to you lot given all that has transpired.

Jamie Carragher: "There's a football chain, and if Liverpool or Chelsea or Man City come in for you, your gonna wanna go"

Doesn't help that your manager has ostracised a £30 million rated central defender.

Surprised City havent moved for him. He could do quite well under Pep, and they havent bought their annual 50 million CB yet

Me: There's a football chain, if Barcelona or Real Madrid come in for you, you're gonna wanna go. :smirk:

That's what exactly Carragher says tbf.

The frustration for Southampton, and this is for every club except possibly Real Madrid and Barcelona...there is a football chain. If you're Southampton, and you have a player wanted by Liverpool, Chelsea or Manchester City, then he'll want to go. There's nothing wrong with that. That's football.

Same with Liverpool and Phillippe Coutinho today. I don't think he's going to go, but he will want to go. Who wouldn't want to go to Barcelona? There are ways of going about it, and I'm sure that either this summer or next summer, Phillippe Coutinho will want to wear that Barcelona shirt. There's nothing wrong with that, that's football

Think he will end up at Anfield, no concrete links to Chelsea and they have already signed a CB.

Four horse race it seems with Chelsea, City, Liverpool and Arsenal all interested. But how the feck can van Dijk prefer Liverpool?

Well I could understand not wanting to go to Arsenal
Chelsea -and city with the offer of CL football you would think would be in a strong position - though at both clubs he would have to compete for his place whilst at Liverpool not only would he be their stand out defender but perhaps Klop has suggested they could build the defence around him... apart from that all I can think of is he perhaps supported liverpool as a kid? or Liverpool have offered crazy wages?

He's big, strong, and fast--->very good at defending 1vs1 situations in open space, good at recovering, good at winning duels. Plus, he's good with his feet and can act as the team's deep-lying playmaker. Essentially he's a much better version of Lovren. He's not great, but he's exactly what they need. Hence why he's worth so much to liverpool
