Virgil van Dijk | VVD throws a hissy fit

I'll predict VVD will go to Liverpool and Spurs will sell Wimmer to S'hampton

Reckon Chelsea will get him if they really push for him, London and a more likely title chance will sway VVD.

I can't for the life of me understand why Liverpool don't go for Romeu from Southampton, he is a very good DM and would solve so many problems for them.

They can buy players from clubs other than Southampton.... can't they?

Yeah, I rate him very highly. I'm surprised nobody has sniffed around at him all summer. Think he'd fit in nicely in just about any team.

I wonder whether Liverpool was always a stalking horse and that Chelsea was always the preferred destination. There were stories going about that his Mrs didn't want a move esp as they had recently had a kid. I think they live in Winchester at the moment. Its about 20 miles to the SFC training ground from there, and 45 miles to CFC's training ground, an easy drive up the A31/A3. Having said that, these meetings that he had with Klopp in Blackpool during the middle of last season suggest otherwise.

The Club are not going to sell to Liverpool if they can help it. I think that they will even accept a lower fee if it means going elsewhere, and they would get very little criticism from the fans.

Looking at the dealing we have had with LFC and MUFC, it seems "strange" that the likes of Lallana and Lovren agitated for moves and were complete two hats over it, having of course been tapped up by LFC. Just like van Dijk is doing now. MUFC were somewhat different with Shaw and Schneiderlin, and the latter, when told he wasn't moving had his strop and then settled down. So basically it seems that the MO that LFC use is flood the press with stories that they want to sign him, and given the number of ex players etc, it is all fairly relentless. Tap the player up, presumably promising them this and that. Turn his head and make it nigh on impossible to stay. As I said on our boards, you expect supporters to be arrogant planks, but you rather hope that other clubs, the agent and the contracted player show a little more respect. This patently has not happened.

And the joke of it is, the agent, one Rob Jansen who has obviously been involved in the tapping up, is "chairman of the EFAA, the European Union for agents/intermediaries and founder and board member of ProAgent, the Dutch Agents Union". He's been caught bang to rights and really should have his licence suspended.

And in all this, if he does go to Chelsea, I will be delighted to see the Scouse reaction, especially from Fat Boy Quinn and Aldridge. RAWK would be hilarious, especially if Coutinho goes to Barca.

Why don't they just tell him that they'll not play him for the next 5 years if he doesn't report back to duty with zest and enthusiasm?

Because they will lose 50m + 5 years of wages doing that?

Considering how much business Liverpool did with Southampton it's just very poor transfer strategy and business relations to piss off the club that's been supplying you first team players year after year. I can't imagine how this hasn't damaged the relations between both clubs.

No player in their right mind will sit in the stands for 5 years, he'll report back to duty with zest and enthusiasm.
So in other words he has no reason to believe them if they threaten to let him sit on his ass for five years.

So far, no zest or enthusiasm for reporting back from him.

The club is bigger than the player, if he calls their bluff, let him sit. He wont and will be back in a jiffy. This isn't a player with one year to go on his contract, he's got a solid 5. They can happily continue without him and the money he'd cost in wages and do just fine. He on the other hand will have a crisis.

Why are Chelsea bidding for him? Resident scousers said it was already a done deal.

Wasting their time now. Him and Keita are great signings for Liverpool.

Isn't Liverpool's original/intended offer higher anyway? Chelsea have Zouma they could tempt as player+cash exchange while we have Sakho.

At least someone finally broke the ice. Now let's see who falls through.

I think most of us said we thought we'd get him, and I still think we can.

It wouldn't surprise me to see him in a Chelsea shirt by Wednesday though. They're normally pretty good at getting players signed with minimum fuss.

You guys broke into their refrigerator, stole the ice, and tried to take it back to Liverpool long back.

Yeah, tbf it was just b20 who said it was already done.

You know who you should be angry at? Your clubs owners who keep letting every decent player/manager go as soon as they've had a decent season. We signed Mane from you despite the fact that we'd finished below you the previous season. Instead of trying to push on and establish yourselves as regular qualifiers for Europe your club yet again opted to cash in.

Doesn't that lack of ambition annoy you?

The Chelsea bid makes it easier for Liverpool & Southampton to restart negotiations.
Van dyke will get better & better. The game comes easy to him, he's a natural. I expect him to be at Liverpool come the start of the season.

Why would Chelsea bid make it easier for Liverpool to negotiate?

Because they couldn't pursue it on their own, they'd been bollocked. It's not as if they could just keep asking after that is it ? Chelsea coming in opens the door again. Southampton, will no doubt contact Liverpool. More bidders the more money they get.

Isn't van Dijk in breach of contract? Surely his terms of employment includes actually making himself available? He's training by himself I suppose but the manager has already said he doesn't want to join the squad or play games.

They can not, if they care about losing 10s of millions.

They said in an official statement that they "respect Southampton's position and can confirm we have ended any interest in the player." So now suddenly they'll turn around and say, well, if Chelsea are negotiating, so why can't we join in? That's an odd logic.

Lack of ambition and pushing on. When people trot that out, you just know that they have no idea about football. I am presuming you are a Sky generation supporter.

Let's just look at the club and where it was when the owners bought it. in July 2009. We started on -10 pts and finished 7th in L1. Next season we got promoted to nPC, when we again got promoted to PL. Where we have finished 14th, 8th, 7th, 6th and last season 8th again. Now what do you expect us to have actually done - won the PL? If so, I would have to ask when have Liverpool won the PL? What happened to your club - where is your ambition? From 197/3-1990/1 you finished in the top 2 EVERY season except in 1980/1 where you finished 5th. So realistically, given that we are a small/medium provincial club, where do you expect us to finish in the league? Given that FFP rules are in place to prevent clubs who aren't already at the top table from joining, I really have no idea what you expect.

Now look at the finances. We have come from L1 and now have the 8th highest wage bill in the PL. Looking at the accounts, we are not squirrelling away huge amounts of money in the bank. We are spending what we make. You trot out this asinine "lack of ambition", but we are adhering to the rules and spending what we have. Pushing on how? Where do you magic this money from? Maybe you are advocating the Leeds Utd way of doing business? Is that it?

As for player sales...

Lovren. It was funny that Lyon laughed at us for paying £8m for him. They were absolutely p***ing themselves when you paid £20m a year later. He had been tapped up and he said that his head was already in Liverpool. He refused to train and went on strike. He was viewed as being not worth keeping given the money paid and was replaced with the loan Alderweireld, who we tried to sign on a permanent but he chose Spurs. Obviously LFC also think Lovren is a bit s**t as you are trying to sign VVD.

Lallana - another who had his head turned by being tapped up. At the time a massive over payment for him, but seeing as the market has moved, the price now seems good. But it wasn't back then. He refused to play as well so was also deemed to be replaceable with Dusan Tadic (who apparently you were sniffing after earlier this window as well). Personally do not think Tadic is as good, but maybe last season and our manager's poor style was the problem.

Mané - he threw a strop as well and said that he would refuse to sign a contract extension. I suspect that given that it was an ACN year, and a petulant player, it was deemed best to sell him. Of course he is hard to replace, but it was viewed that Boufal was the man. Boufal, like Mané, had a somewhat disappointing first season (for different reasons), so we will see this season.

Clyne - last year of his contract and refused to sign a new one. What do you suggest doing? We cannot compete wage wise, so short of holding a gun to his head, the perceived course of action is to cash in rather than let go on a free.

Lambert - no comment needed on that one.

So basically you are saying we should have kept all these players happy and kept them at the club. Ambition hey?? And how do you keep them happy? By paying them £100k+ a week. Do you really not think that if we could do that, we would be?? That's a rhetorical question, as you obviously don't think that, and thus why I say you have little idea how football works. Unless there is a wage cap that all PL clubs can afford, this situation is always going to happen.

But the way your club has acted is the problem. You've been caught doing it at all levels - the 12 year odl from Stoke. Solanke. VVD. It is sad that you supporters see nothing wrong with it, but then that is the new type of supporter that follows LFC. Your owners don't care. They have no connection to the City and none with the Club other than recently having bought it. No history. They are there to make an investment, and doing things the proper way gets in the way of making a profit, which goes against the reason for investing. FSG have turned you into a vile club. The saddest thing is the arrogance that LFC fans trot out, and the disdain for all others.

So your ambition amounts to spend spend spend. That's maybe what you are happy with. Me, I am a bit older. I want to actually grow something rather than just go out and buy it. Bring players through the academy, see players, see the connection with the club rather than having a team full of mercenaries. There is a happy balance to be had, as having a team full of academy players isn't going to work. Looking at your last game of the season.....Mignolet, Milner, Lovren, Matip, Clyne, Coutinho, Can, Wijnaldum, Lallana, Firmino, Sturridge. All 11 bought in, none with any long term connection to the club.
