Virgil van Dijk | VVD throws a hissy fit

Is it hypocritical of fans of big clubs to become sanctimonious about tapping up and players striking etc? Such behaviour has almost certainly benefited all big clubs who raid lesser teams. It becomes an outrage when it's a rival doing such things.

The moralising football fan is usually on an extremely sticky wicket.

Yeah but yous got caught la

I don't understand the hype about him. For 60m the very least you want is a good defender. This guy is just good on the ball while being error prone defensively. I wouldn't take him over any of our CBs that's for certain.

Most clubs don't tap up players and then boast about it in the media. Also it's fairly easy to moralize when the club in question is Liverpool.

Thanks for essentially proving my point about the one-eyed nature of football fans

I admire your naivety as to how football clubs operate.

When was a club's best player benched for half a season as stated above ?
As stated above, Berahino. Also, they don't have to bench him for half a season. Merely until the window closes and a transfer is no longer possible. I imagine he will have a swift attitude adjustment when faced with the prospect of sitting on his ass for six months.

Or they could collect around £70m for him and reinvest

With the Internet being what it is, it's bound to turn up bizarre opinions like this.

Surely Chelsea don't need another CB...
Why? They let Zouma on loan and sold Ake. Cahill, Luiz, Azpilicueta, Rudiger? I doubt Christensen will feature much at all. And even if he does, plus VVD would be 6 players for 3 spots. That seems about right.

Id be up for signing him and giving Southampton Smalling or Jones

Can it even be considered tapping up when Liverpool go for a Southampton player? I thought they had some kind of feeder agreement.

I'm sure that must be half of why they acted so strongly. If for example, Chelsea had tapped him up like we saw with Conte texting sweet nothings instead of Klopp, would they have acted as strongly? The fact Liverpool KEEP buying their players must be incredibly frustrating.

Rudiger and Christensen have both been very good the last couple of seasons for their respective clubs, I don't they'll be happy signing/going back to Chelsea to sit on the bench. VVD won't either. So who gets dropped?

Might as well have kept Ake rather than try and fit 6 players in to 3 CB positions, all 6 of whom probably expect to start. Conte didn't rotate much last year, either.

Chelsea didn't have European football to concern themselves with last season. I suspect he will rotate this season.

Suspect Saints would rather sell him anywhere else than Liverpool and the player presumably will be just as happy (or even happier) to play for Chelsea/City if they stump up the cash.

I rate VVD. I think he's a good leader, strong/athletic, and great in the air. I definitely think there are better CB's but not many that are available and PL proven. His fee shouldn't exceed 45 mil, but it will. Liverpool seem the most in need of a CB. Chelsea don't really need him and I don't really see City splashing that much cash on that many defenders in one summer. I probably would have taken him over Lindelof, but we'll see how t all turns out in a couple seasons

He isn't even 'PL proven', more like Pl domicile.

He is playing for a mid table team and is 26.

He has only played around 50 games outside of Holland and Scotland.

He only got his first cap for a extremely weak Dutch team two years ago.

Now for all this he is going to become the most expensive defender in the history of football by £10mil+. For that sort of money you really should be getting more proven talent if you have any sense.

Liverpool fans are such hypocrites. Mugging us off all season about paying 90m for Pogba and yet they're more than happy to spend 70m on a Southampton centre back and 75m on an unproven CM from the Bundesliga.

Absolutely laughable.

If fans are entitled to one thing and one thing only, it's hypocrisy. It's the one constant characteristic of all fans of all clubs. It's inherently entwined with the notion of tribalism in that fans are governed by their base emotions which don't operate with typical logic and sense. The world is viewed with a bias that is perfectly unreasonable.

For evidence of this read any football forum of any club in any country. No single set of fans are more guilty of it than any other yet we always attribute such negative characteristics to our nearest and dearest rivals - which is hypocritical in itself!!

Hypocrisy is our nectar. Take that away and you're hollowing out the essence of fanaticism.

Genuinely...seriously...why are transfer fees such a big talking point? The valuation of players is a total nonsense yet all I read is rival fans bickering over fees in a market that apparently has no rules. It's become the new stick to beat each other with.

And guess what...it's possibly the dullest most talked about topic on the planet.

It's a talking point in this case because you're about to make this guy the most expensive defender in the world and he's not that even that good. It's utterly absurd. Just like signing Andy Carroll for 35m was.

Southampton are being close to been takenover by Chinese plus the new TV deal has made it almost impossible for buyers to price out players if the selling club doesn't want to sell.

It's a talking point to score points. It's like bringing up Di Maria for the purposes of winning an argument. Yawn.

The market is ballooning. If VVD becomes the most expensive defender ever it's because the crazy market allows it. TV money has rendered past transfer records obsolete. Next summer it'll be even higher. Everton have just had a £45m bid rejected for good Swansea player...that's the context of the market. Rationalising it with faux wisdom and cautionary disapproval is totally redundant. That's why it's a dull topic.

But if the player goes on strike it can become more complicated, no?

What argument? Lol. You seem to be very wound up for some reason. If it's that dull a topic then ignore it and move on.

My main point (which you might have comprehended if you weren't frothing at the mouth) was that he's not very good to begin with. Everyone over pays but ideally you want to be overpaying for good players (Like Keita for instance).

Firstly? I'm not angry but thanks for your concern. In fact saying stuff like that on a forum is even more boring than talking about transfer fees.

Secondly, if you don't rate VVD then fair enough. That's a far more engaging discussion. I happen to believe he's precisely what Liverpool require to become a more balanced and steady side. Since the Carragher/Hyypia partnership Liverpool have not been solid enough due to personnel. Klopp has gone big on VVD because he sees the void he'd be filling.

In the context of where Liverpool are as a club, the lavish TV money and based on available players I believe VVD is extremely good business. I'm glad Klopp agrees.

But if the player goes on strike it can become more complicated, no?

They kept hold of Schneiderlin who went on strike too just three years back. With more financial strength and bigger contract for VvD, they won't sell him unless you give them 70m plus.

He's not good enough for City. Would be good for Chelsea as they play a formation that's a lot more forgiving for defenders. Such a formation he'd excell in.
