Virgil van Dijk | VVD throws a hissy fit

I don't think anyone is arguing against a Bailly-Rojo partnership, they were great. What I don't think most will agree with is Rojo being better than Bailly.
I'd say Rojo was better than Bailly this season as the latter was somewhat inconsistent. Bailly started off fantastically, then slipped off a bit, went to the ACON, then when he came back he was terrible for a few weeks before slowly but surely improving his form as the season wore on. Whereas Rojo was generally very good whenever he was played at centreback this season, although it has to be remembered he had those couple of games where he really should have been sent off.

Now that I think about it, Rojo probably was more consistent. Bailly's higher ceiling may be coloring my judgement. At his best, he's definitely a better player than Rojo.

Klipp Klopp loves tapping up

When Southampton discovered how Liverpool had reportedly sent detailed video clips to Virgil van Dijk on how he would fit into Jurgen Klopp’s side the south-coast side believed a line had been crossed.

Van Dijk, 25, had extensive talks with Klopp over a proposed £50million move to Anfield and agreed personal terms with the club, according to Yahoo Sport.

The report also claims the Dutch centre-back received video messages detailing how he would be used and he has now “kicked up a fuss” in a bid to be sold by Southampton.

The former Celtic man has five years left on his Saints deal and the club do not need to sell, although if they receive a huge offer they are likely to consider his sale.

Manchester City and Chelsea are also believed to have held talks with the player, but such was Liverpool’s contact that the club “had to take a stand”.

The report quotes a club source: “The club had to take a stand this week as we have been aware of what has been going on for months and it has gone too far,” the source told us.

“Southampton have told the player that we don’t want to sell him this summer, but he thought he could kick up a big enough fuss that he would be sold for £50m.

“That is never happening and by holding talks with the player, sending him video clips of how he will fit into their team and doing this all without the permission of Southampton, there is no way he will be sold to Liverpool at this stage.

“Of course, every player has a price and if £100m or something close is put on the table, then it will be considered, but Southampton do not need to sell van Dijk this summer.”

The agent at the centre of the deal is chasing a huge pay day and is still keen to a push the deal through, as is the player, but Liverpool backed off and apologised for their actions after Saints made a complaint to the Premier League.

It's pretty low even by Liverpool's standards. Not at all surprised Southampton said enough is enough. Both Liverpool and van Dijk have treated Southampton with contempt and shown a complete lack of respect. Klopp has also shown himself to be a massive bellend.

Rojo our best defender ? He's improved under Jose but needs to maintain his form to be considered our 'best'. My point is that we need 4 top class CB's, Jones and now Smalling seem to spend too much time on the treatment table so one or both could move on. VVD appears to be availed so why not ?
Which ever pairing from Bailly/Van Dijk/Rojo/Jones or Smalling would depend on form, fitness and the opposition.
I guess my point is that whoever we bring in, SHOULD be capable of going straight into the starting line-up, and don't forget Rojo won't be fit for some time.

Agree with this. It's about having a set of CB's who then compete and provide strong reinforcement options. Jones and Smalling are perennial sicknotes and look how we struggled when Bailly and Rojo were lost this season. The problem with VVD though is that he'd be expected to start regardless because of the price tag it will take to get him.

Ban Liverpool from making transfers for the next transfer window and make them pay Southampton a fee would be enough I reckon.

Their season would basically be fecked, and they deserve it. cnuts.

I think they should return all players signed from So'ton.

you watch, the media will try find ways to embroil city and chelsea further into this so that if their beloved lpool cant sign him, no one can

Don't worry, you beloved club knows how to get out the shit.

Independent already ran a story about him also meeting with Conte in secret. Every club does it, however it just appears to be another thing we're inept at.

Looks like Liverpool (not the fans they think they can buy anyone) know the only way to attract the top dollar players is by tapping them up otherwise they would have little to no chance of signing them

Everyone does it. We were allegedly talking with Paul Pogba 5-6 months before we signed him.

Their mistake was being so obvious with it that Southampton were forced to complain.

Yeah Liverpool thought they were being clever by bragging that a player chose them over their rivals. Funny how that has ended up with them losing out on the player. The stupid tits.

Go to RAWK and go to the transfer section . Come back here then read your first sentence again and you'll then realise what shite you are spouting.

Don't think they're being forced to complain so much as launching a one man crusade. Given Southampton are a club notorious for developing talent and providing a stepping stone this could be bad news for them. Agents and players are going to think twice before moving there.

Van Dik sounds like a prima donna. Signing that long contract with his club and then going behind their backs almost immediately to try and get a move away. Footballers are really awful

The source says the following:
"The club had to take a stand this week as we have been aware of what has been going on for months and it has gone too far,”

I mean it shows as clear as day that tapping up happens often. The clubs are obviously aware of it.

I wouldn't go that far, but it was really silly signing a 6 year contract last summer. What did he expect? Completely understand Southampton's point of view here.

Oh I'm with Southampton on this. Van Dik is a Dik for sure:lol:

Yes, it benefits all clubs to check whether a player would be interested in joining/ convince them of the project before investing the time negotiating a fee and facing a potential embarrassment if they refuse to move. So there seems to be a gentleman's agreement not to complain about limited 'quiet contact'.

The only issues are when a club causes the player to try and force the move, or in this case seemingly leaking it to the paper before a fee was agreed and potentially embarrassing the selling club.

Thank you Orc II

A transfer ban for something that most clubs do all the time?

You've been caught red handed, couple that with your ban for tapping up younger players and your previous pursuit of Dempsey and Ziege, it's about time the FA get tough with you guys.

I've no doubt everyone does it, but it's against the rules and if you're stupid enough to be caught repeatedly you should face punishment.

Right, but different people were in charge of Liverpool's transfer dealings with the Ziege and Dempsey incidents. It's not like it's one person or the club itself committing offences over and over again in the transfer market.

You're also suggesting Liverpool should be punished because they were caught, not because they did something wrong. The FA should be looking to stop tapping up not warning clubs to be more careful when doing it.

A scouse I work with told me that the apology was because the FA indicated you would be hit with a 2-4 window ban if you were naughty again after the youth football one. Heard anything about that?

60M buys you one VVD
Or
Lindelöf and Bailly
Or
Being caught with your pants down with your hand in the cookie jar

I remember PSV were upset when it turned out Fergie kept in touch with Van Nistelrooy after his original transfer fell through and he torn his cruciate ligament. There was also some fuss when Stam revealed in his booked that Fergie tapped him up in 1998.
