Vinicius Junior

Boycotting it because somebody else who is more deserving of it won is laughable
The award has become everything it wasn't intended to be - political, PR-driven. The fact that several contracts now have it included as well for a cash bonus means that a lot of people are concerned less about who is the best player, but who is the right face to be the best player.

Whatever the case, if it is Rodri, I'm happy with that and pleasantly surprised. He's an incredible player, and the best in the world in his position along with performing his role to the highest level relative to what any other player does in their own role. Absolutely vital for club and country too.

Plus a nice change of pace giving it to a holding midfielder who just does his thing and never really goes for the limelight is good too. Sucks he plays for City, but gotta respect him as a player.

I mean, I don't get why you would say Rodri is more deserving. He was not even a top 3 best player for Spain at the Euros and his club season was good, but nothing eye catching. Wasn't even nominated for EPL player of the year.

Agreed, while I don't like City having a Ballon d'Or winner, his season was truly exceptional and it would be nice to see a defensive midfielder win the award for a change.

He was in team of the year?

Not be a top 3 best player for Spain but still ends up winning player of the tournament ? Make it make sense

If this is really true, it's a great decision. Turned up for 2 games and was invisible for Brazil and inconsistent throughout the season. Would have been the most underwhelming winner ever.

This seems very small time

The sheer entitlement from RM and their players and the need to play the victim card while being the biggest club in the world. Crazy.

Don’t give a shit about the award but he’s already an insufferable little brat. This is for the best.

It's a shit award and only exists, like the Golden Globes, so that sports journalists can namedrop and pretend to be important.

Why do you care if someone doesn't show up? One fewer private jet flying to and from Paris for no reason.

At any level or field, it's very petty to be ready to go somewhere and a whole organisation not show up suddenly because they didn't win.

You can feel that way but ultimately it doesn't matter. Ironically the people being offended would be the people who make a living out of offending the absentees.

As good as a footballer he can be, he's got the neymar syndrome, where he needs to be a bigger dickhead than everyone else. It really is annoying.

Real Madrid as an entire club need humbling. Yes, they’re the biggest club in the world but the entitlement that runs through the club is on another level. You can see the entitlement permeate onto the players like Vinicius and it’s ugly. I hate Barca too, but seeing Real get thrashed by them the other night was sweet af and I hope they dominate Real for the next few years.

Thought the whole original point of it was PR driven, to promote sales of France Football magazine? Not that any of the players who claim to care about the award have ever probably read it!

Now that I'd agree with. Not going because you don't give a crap about it, fine. Would like to think that would be me if I was a player, even if I was going to win it 'cause it's bollocks and doesn't mean anything. To be really into it and then not show up because you're not winning is just childish.

I never said he did or didn’t deserve to win. But to act like complete spoiled brats and not turn up to the awards is pathetic, embarassing and shows an unhealthy level of entitlement that clearly runs through the club. Shows a total lack of professionalism from players that are meant to be role models too.

P.S. it’s based on the last 12 months, so the fact they’ve won the CL multiple times in recent years is completely irrelevant. Man City won the CL and treble the season before last too and none of their players won it, but they still showed up.

If that's true then it's ridiculous.

I'm 100% sure football is a team sport where the goal is for your team to win games, win trophies and win leagues.

Not sure it's to get an award for yourself, that should be an afterthought.
I had the exact same reaction. To be losing 0-4 and boast about [not even won] personal award is quite shameful, if true

Footballers have gone weird. Started with Ronaldo's narcissm and self-centredness, desperately trying to win this each year becaus me me me. I don't remember anyone caring about this award growing up, and apparently Michael Owen (very similar age to me), had to ask what it was when he won it. Not sure if true but find it very plausible.

After Ronaldo started signalling he cared so much about it his fans started to as well, then the Messi fans did in turn and you had this strange fighting over it online for years. Until then it barely got a mention but now how many Balon D'ors someone has won is a huge staple of declaring which of 2 players is better than the other. People growing up in that era now place this huge emphasis on it, with Trent Alexander Arnold saying he'd rather win it than the World Cup.

Feel like and old fecker but bloody hell, kids these days! (Not all of them). Now Vini's acting up over it as well.

How many people who care about it have read France Football, the magazine it was created to promote? How many know who the judges are? If given a list of judges how many would they recognise which is important before deciding if you value their opinion or not?

The whole fuss over it is straight up bizarre.

Very well said!

Agreed

«I'll do it 10x if I have to. They're not ready.»

We can expect his obnoxious behavior to 10x apparently.

It's because in 2024 footballers with clout can outearn their wages in brand deals and image rights and the BDO is seen as equal to a Fifa World Player of the Year award even though they used to exclude non-Europeans like Pele and Maradona. It's down to FIFA's incompetence that France Football is tasked with handing out an award deemed of great significance but wasn't open to non-Europeans until 1995.

As for why it matters so much, the current generation of footballers and their clubs post yearly reaction videos to FIFA ratings, they are obsessed with clout. Messi and Ronaldo's rivalry also got everyone more interested in the BDO just to see who would win it over the other annually and if Messi would win more BDOs, people didn't used to care as much about the BDO until it became a dick-measuring contest for those 2. Similarly everyone got way more invested in tennis Grand Slam counts during the Big 3 era until it was clear Djokovic would surpass Fedal and hold the all-time record. Like it or not, such rivalries attract more fans to sports and raise the profile of awards like the BDO. If tennis had an equivalent annual prize, Big 3 fans would argue 247 over who deserved it more in the past 20 years and the award would go viral due to the rivalries. Thing is, with Messi and CR7 retired the Ballon's prestige isn't what it was since you no longer need to play better than Messi to win, but football fans are still behaving like the current candidates put up astronomical performances compared to everyone else when Vinicius' G/A numbers are nowhere near previous winners.

What exactly aren’t they ready for? I mean, my instant thought was that he implies that it’s a racism issue
