VAR, Refs and Linesmen | General Discussion

Fans of every team in the league are convinced that they get way too many decisions against them. Every team.
Absolutely. I can’t bare it. ‘Corruption’ is the word that dominates every post match chat. Fans losing the plot. As if losing a match can no longer be accepted. You have to blame some underhand conspiracy determined to destroy YOUR team’s chances while also benefiting your rival.

Every fanbase is guilty of this and it infects the discourse. Really pathetic and boring.

Short story: Maguire was offside but there was no VAR.

The end
We also saw in the Man Utd vs Arsenal FA Cup game - officials are not used to running games without VAR. mistakes happen, but I think the linesman would have been far more likely to have called it right if VAR had never been introduced - it’s now a comfort blanket.

No reason a game with two teams who are both in the PL shouldn’t have VAR.

It was nice however to cheer, knowing there was no review (irrespective of whether the decision was right or wrong).

I think you have a point about refs possibly losing a certain judgement as VAR has deskilled them

Agree. There is no conspiracy, and all fans have their entitled, whining nutters - who will argue every decision is against them, even when the decision is perfectly acceptable.

These fans mean the PGMOL have been able to operate without real oversight of an appalling implementation - because they can point to irrational fans every week. So the real issues can go unresolved.

With VAR, a linesman is largely redundant - they are told to let even blatant offsides go until the play runs its course. Every decision of any consequence is checked and double checked - you can’t just officiate in a game a couple of times a year with a completely different protocol and expect them to be efficient.

Exactly right.

Yep, and then they get one that’s too obvious to dispute and it’s “we deserve that after all those previous decisions against us”, or “the media will make sure we never get another decision after that”. Crazy when you go on social media and see even fans of literal Championship clubs who think the whole of football is conspiring against them

A big reason I stay away from social media. These tin foil hat wearing losers are all over it. Pretty sure that the refs are either incompetent or they are getting told how to ref the games very differently from what most fans , players and managers would like to see. Call me old school. But i think decisions even themselves out though out the season.

He is nowhere near as far offside as people think. There is a Leicester defender hidden behind zirkzee. He probably is still offside just. But he's certainly not miles off.

I was very close to and it certainly didn't look offside from the other side.

Yeah if you zoom right in on the picture you can see the player behind Zirkzee has his leg stuck right out and the end of his boot looks quite close to where the line would have been drawn on Harry so while I still think it is offside it would have been a lot lot tighter than people are suggesting

Not convinced at all that Newcastle's equaliser against Birmingham crossed the line there - questionable call from the linesman at best.

9 minutes added for Liverpool time.
If there were any more officials helping Liverpool out, they may as well just hand them everything

I don’t believe in conspiracies, but it feels like there’s a conspiracy to help Liverpool to win the league this season.
Maybe deflection from plastic City?!

I know they gave it, but fecking VAR man....searching, searching, searching for a reason.

Spent 2 seconds looking at handballs and studs up tackles.

4 hours looking for a reason to disallow a last minute goal like that, when a first look you could see it was onside. Ridiculous.

If a United player did what jones did there, they would get a 6 month ban
It’s the last ever Goodison derby game, Liverpool fans were singing YAWN moments earlier and Doucore just basically cocks an ear to them.

Jones was more p!ssed they’d conceded.. not that I’d have agreed but with how red card rules can be determined (and distance he ran to shove Doucore), could have got a straight red. It’s Oliver?

So what does this mean for the thread narrative that shit VAR decisions only happen in the Premier League?
This was a referee's decision though, not a VAR one - I think VAR couldn't overrule because there was contact? Not sure about those rules though. And it was a Turkish referee, where Fenerbahce just sent out an open letter towards Galatarasay accusing them of bending the rules and blatant cheating, so not sure the PL should take notice of his decision

Situations like this really make me think how much I can emotionally invest in football anymore though. Just imagine being on the receiving end of such a call, this isn't football anymore for me. Same with some of the handball rules and whatnot.
