VAR, Refs and Linesmen | General Discussion

How the hell is this the image you select for doing the offside?! The ball is already away from Young's foot.

No idea what happened the frame before this but it could have been more clearly on/off.

It might be good that Oliver has pissed off the scousers, they will properly kick up a fuss about him and there might actually be something done about how poor a ref he is.

I'm sure I read somewhere that the moment that matters is after the ball has left the boot. So presumably in the previous frame there isn't any separation.

It's all a complete nonsense anyway. Offside was never intended to be subject to this level of insane scrutiny. It's a law that was introduced to prevent goal-hanging FFS.

I thought offside is supposed to be from first contact of the passers foot with the ball, when they freeze these and you can see the motion blur on the ball, it's already gone from the players foot and that just seems wrong.

Agree. Advantage should go with the attacker and have a margin for error. I think it would make it clearer anyway.

There is a margin for error though. That's why they increased the width of the lines and have it so it's offside when they don't overlap.

Since doing that there hasn't been as much controversy around tight offsides as there was when VAR was first introduced.

It’s the last ever Goodison derby game, Liverpool fans were singing YAWN moments earlier and Doucore just basically cocks an ear to them.

Jones was more p!ssed they’d conceded.. not that I’d have agreed but with how red card rules can be determined (and distance he ran to shove Doucore), could have got a straight red. It’s Oliver?

Think it's fair that Doucoure got a yellow as you can argue he was inciting stuff but Jones should have been a straight red.

Fair enough if there has been but it still takes an eternity to make a decision. I want to see more goals in games too so if you increase the margin I think it would be better overall.

Agree with that, Jones was way over the top.

Yeah, Doucoure was cupping his ear a fair distance from the actual touchline, then Jones just sprinted over and charged into his back trying to start a fight, and was still yapping like a prat and trying to chase after him when everyone else had got involved and Doucoure was just smiling his way up the pitch.

Severely doubt that, otherwise a player could scoop the ball up, have a team mate run 10 yards offside and then flick it to them

Some Scandinavian team actually posted a video about doing just that.

https://www.thefa.com/football-rules-governance/lawsandrules/laws/football-11-11/law-11---offside

2. Offside offence

A player in an offside position at the moment the ball is played or touched* by a team-mate is only penalised on becoming involved in active play by:
  • interfering with play by playing or touching a ball passed or touched by a team-mate or
  • interfering with an opponent by:
    • preventing an opponent from playing or being able to play the ball by clearly obstructing the opponent’s line of vision or
    • challenging an opponent for the ball or
    • clearly attempting to play a ball which is close when this action impacts on an opponent or
    • making an obvious action which clearly impacts on the ability of an opponent to play the ball
*The first point of contact of the 'play' or 'touch' of the ball should be used

"Play" covers the point the pass was made (e.g. ball leaves foot).
"Touch" covers an unintentional content to cover off the loophole of "but I didn't play the ball"

So in this case, I don't think the FA have that loophole

First point of contact is when the player first makes contact with the ball to play the pass or redirect to a player who is deemed offside.

There is no loophole as such, only if you try to use what that Swedish club pointed out.

If this is applied as worded, then motion blur on the ball from the cameras would indicate it is already moving and not stopped when the ball was actually played. Which is not the correct application of the rule.

To me the biggest problem is the player going down. Faking injury/pain.

Secondly the lack of condemnation for him.

We want refs to make better decisions but it's really hard when you have 22 professionals trying to con them for 90mins.

The rules around VAR intervention need to be simplified - the ref explains the reasoning behind their decision and VAR sends them to the monitor if the ref has got any of it wrong (contact, force, missing context, etc).

Semi-automated offside technology will be used for the 7 games taking place at PL stadiums in the 5th round of the FA Cup.

Liverpool fan not happy with Slots red card. Seems to have gone to the same school as that moron who abused Cantona and changed what he said…

“I suspect Slot said something like 'I hope you don't mind me saying Ref but your performance tonight fell way below the standards set by others'. Or something similar !!!”
After the recent Ireland v England rugby match the English captain said “We were on the wrong side of the referee.” Clever wording to get the point across.

Yeah, the weird thing on that disallowed Palace goal is that if it had been given I don't even think they'd check to see if it went out of play.

VAR seems to have just gone with the Linesman because there isn't a "conclusive angle". But all the angles they did have at their disposal, don't seem to show a ball out of play.

Why was the Ipswich keeper not sent off for the deliberate handball against Villa? MOTD didn’t seem to mention it at all.

Appreciate the ref waiting for our first bad tackle to give the first yellow yet Davies and Maddison got away with theirs.

Spurs pissed around and took 30+ sec over every single throw in, free kick, goal kick and corner since the 15th minute. Made 5 subs and slowly walked off for each one.

3 minutes. If United are winning and the game plays out the exact same way, it's 8 minutes.

The double sub took exactly 1 minute from us winning the free to Maguire’s taking the free kick. 3 mins was a disgrace

How the feck did Konate not get another yellow for that challenge and Carragher saying it’s not a yellow card. Feck off.
That was a lucky one for Liverpool, Konate has that bit of wrecklessness that he needs to sort, stupid pull for first yellow and then very wreckless next foul, should have walked.

It was Carragher’s which got me - ‘that’s not a yellow card’. Stupid to have him on Liverpool games.
he's an idiot, calling it a clash of heads and then sticking with that even after the replay clearly showed otherwise, not sure if they think VAR are listening in or what, but just admit on the replay you got it wrong, we're not blind

It’s just about controlling the narrative. He downplays it and it’s not news. Conversely, with United decisions they go absolutely ape shit, show it from 29 different angles at 7 different speeds and ask people to call in to give impact statements.

Our draw against Sociedad reminded me of the last time we played them at OT. Remember thinking that extremely sh*t decisions, like this one, going against us without any discussion or debate was becoming more common. Almost 3 years on, still think we accept more nonsense not just from our players and management, but also from the referees.

Andy Madley is the referee at Everton tomorrow. So his performance in the FA Cup match at Arsenal wasn't bad enough to get him demoted.
