VAR, Refs and Linesmen | General Discussion

We are just reliving the RAWK era when Liverpool used to be shit. Rafael Benitez was a laughing stock for a decade straight because of his "fachts", now United fans are begging the manager to repeat the humiliation.

People have gone mental because they can't cope with United not being competitive. If a decision goes against United it's corruption, if it goes for United it means United will never get a decision again. If a decision goes against a rival, then any talk about if will be unfair media focus that would never happen for United, if it goes for a rival it's corruption again. Any 50/50 is actually a 90/10, so corruption.

If United ever returns to former glories we'll all pretend this lunacy never happened, and go back to making fun of other fans who will do the same thing.
This. It’s so amusing how some are making these claims and accusations and can’t see the irony of them, given that your own rivals did exactly the same when SAF was in charge.

There are posters in the matchday thread that would rather convince you the Earth is flat than admit Liverpool got a fair decision or, God forbid, might win the league on merit rather than “pure dumb luck, injury time winners, and opposition missing sitters”.

We've also seen this given or not given enough times to know there's no consistency or bright line rule being applied. Its a red herring to say that its a penalty or not a penalty because there's no actual standard.

The referee shook the Magic 8 Ball in his head and it came up penalty. VAR agrees because that what VAR does. Because it was called a penalty, TV presenters will say that it was a penalty, just as if it wasn't called a penalty they would all be calling it an inadvertent coming together of feet that wasn't a penalty.

What am I missing, where’s the foul supposed to be? Number 4 on Gakpo, yeah?
If you’re not seeing the contact after all the Tweets have been posted on this very page, I think you’re intentionally not willing to see it tbh.

Do you really believe Gakpo is past his defender, eyes on the ball in the air and then all of a sudden thinks to himself “let’s clip myself”?

Ok yeah we can see the contact in the last one but he definitely feels that and then just kicks his other leg. Not enough for VAR to intervene though.

Thanks for providing the replay.
Have you ever played football or know the feeling when someone touches your leg while running, even ever so slightly? It lags and that’s the result you’re gonna get.

I don’t know how you can claim he gets touched AND Gakpo delibirately kicks himself. No one can react that fast so something in a split second, especially off balance.

It's all well and good saying it's a pen, but we aren't getting given that, so that makes it all immaterial in my United loving world.
Not in a month of Sundays would we get that, off either the ref or VAR. Can anyone remember the last penalty we got that was as soft as that? Even though I can think of 5 off the top of my head that were awarded against us.

Is that the only alternative? That he chose to clip his own leg?

I’ve watched the other angles and the amount of contact there would keep a 6 foot Jenga tower upright. Yet Cody Gakpo falls like a sack of spuds.

Even if we all agree it’s a pen, the same thing could happen tomorrow and it wouldn’t be.

Oh it's the old 'have you ever played football' nonsense.

Yes I've played football along with a lot of other sports and separate to that we also used to kick ourselves in the back of the leg mid-stride, so that we'd hit the deck quite a bit when I was a child. Elite footballers have elite reactions. I think he was clever and made the most of it, like countless other footballers every week, is all I'm saying. Nothing to moan about really.

Contact at that speed? No it wouldn’t. And the last paragraph is aimed at VAR’s inconsistency and referees’ incompetence, which is fair enough but not solely related to or beneficial for Liverpool (contrary to popular belief on here).

But look at Gakpo’s reaction, I believe he doesn’t even appeal or “makes the most of it” at all? Would need to rewatch though.

It was also…a penalty, so there’s that as well to consider.

He didn’t block him

“Interferes”, how often do you think that happens in corners ?

You see , the issue is consistent application , you will see that sort of stuff going unpunished in many many many games.
But he did. That was his job.

People have a real hard time seeing the foul when players get clipped during a sprint. Clear penalty. Move on people.

You watch rugby, right? That was a classic tap tackle. Clipped one foot and made it hit the other, so he goes down like a sack of shit. I don’t think it was deliberate but that’s a risk when you run right behind someone like the defender did. Clear penalty for me.

I can't really see it myself, but apparently people can spot the defender touching Gakpo's left leg
Yeah you're just lying right now, there's 4 different videos clearling showing the way Cook clips him. Everyone saying "soft" "clipped himself" are just wumming.
All the conspiracy theories are fine but this incident is the topic and it's not even close: anyone getting clipped that way in the box is getting a penalty, stop playing victims.

He clipped his own heel with his other foot.

Cook clips Gakpo first, which then leads to Gakpo's left foot hitting the back of his right leg. It was a classic trip case.

It was a definite penalty. The real question for me was whether there was a foul from Liverpool in the build-up.

Why is everyone talking to me like I was some kind of recluse in childhood who never tripped anyone up or ever played a sport in my life today?

Are there actual humans who don't understand the mechanics of kicking the back leg of someone who's moving at a moderate pace?

All of what you said can be true and I can still think he made sure he went down after the contact. I said in the previous post, after seeing the zoomed in replay showing the contact, that the decision shouldn't have been overturned.

How about you get lost? I don't see the contact, who are you to tell me I do?

I conceded that there is a good chance there's contact and I just can't see it. It's like one of those illusion pictures, once you've seen something you can't unsee it, and I can't unsee Gakpo clipping himself

 Ok, fair enough! It just looks like such an obvious trip to me. It was when you implied that Gakpo was tap tackled yet somehow had an option not to fall over but instead chose to go down that you lost me. Maybe because you’re watching too many slow motion replays? In real time it all happened in a fraction of a second. It was quite a straightforward trip.

You must have missed this post earlier. Look at the reply to the tweet in the spoiler. The contact is clear as day.

It's a penalty:

Great commentary btw.

The second tweet is the first time I've seen the contact!

Watched the first tweet's clip like 15 times today without seeing the contact, but that second one makes it clear

Well not really, my initial point was that he kicked his own leg. It looked like that in the first replays which didn't show the contact, rather than the more messy natural fall when you get tripped or tapped.

After seeing the contact, it still looked to me like he put force into his foot to make sure he kicked the back of his own leg. Perhaps it was an optical illusion and perhaps you're right and I've spent too much time on what was the correct decision in any case.

Congratulations, took you 2 hours to see what most saw and understood in 30s. Welcome onboard mate !
