VAR, Refs and Linesmen | General Discussion

The defender literally kicks Gakpo’s left leg behind his right leg as he’s running. Some on this forum hate Liverpool so much they’re prepared to lie to themselves about anything!

It’s really the inconsistency that’s the issue. We’ve all seen a million times where this is just described as inadvertent contact and a coming together of legs and nothing is given.

Also, if this is a foul it technically should be a red card for DOGSO as Cook was not attempting to challenge for the ball so double jeopardy still applies and there was no covering player capable of getting between Gakpo and the goal at the time of the foul.

If you think this situation is "never a penalty" you are mental. Gakpo has eyes only for the ball and gets clipped from behind at full speed.

I can't see much contact in that replay. Gakpo definitely makes the most of it.

EDIT: Saw the other replay he just kicks his own leg. How was that given?

If this is the footage they used to determine the foul then it is concerning.
The frames between 3 and 4 secs where the contact is allegedly made are so blurred it's hard to see exactly what happens.

IMO I think he probably does touch him, but it's a very big call on such poor video evidence.

Tbf the ref gave the penalty, not VAR.
Correct decision IMO.

We are just reliving the RAWK era when Liverpool used to be shit. Rafael Benitez was a laughing stock for a decade straight because of his "fachts", now United fans are begging the manager to repeat the humiliation.

People have gone mental because they can't cope with United not being competitive. If a decision goes against United it's corruption, if it goes for United it means United will never get a decision again. If a decision goes against a rival, then any talk about if will be unfair media focus that would never happen for United, if it goes for a rival it's corruption again. Any 50/50 is actually a 90/10, so corruption.

If United ever returns to former glories we'll all pretend this lunacy never happened, and go back to making fun of other fans who will do the same thing.

Very naive of you if you think Liverpool do not get favourable decisions and refs are afraid to give United anything if it even has a hint of controversy due to the press fall out and the rage after it

Correct decision. The offside Villa player blocks off Semedo, who would otherwise have been a lot closer to McGinn and could have stopped the cross coming in.

Basically all of Villa's free kick routines revolve around some degree of offside players obstructing defenders. They can feck off.

That’s cool and all but it has nothing to do with Liverpool getting a penalty because Gakpo tripped over his own leg. Whatever makes you feel better though, I guess.

You should inform Bournemouth. They actually played the game, and didn't protest.

If you have watched any games last 4-5 years you wouldn’t write what you did.

If you don’t think some clubs are getting lucky with decisions while other clubs can only dream of those decisions. Well, then I can’t help you.

Yeah weird they didn’t protest despite all the players having access to the same slow motion replay VAR had access to.

What do you think you're saying right now? The obvious interpretation is that the defender thought he fouled in an obvious way, and therefore didn't protest, but if he had seen the replay then he'd realize that his sensation of fouling the Liverpool player was a hallucination. That's crazy, though, so it would have to be something else.

He didn’t impede the player.

Maybe not impede, but he definitely interferes with him... He literally puts both his hands on him. Even if it's enough to distract him for a millisecond, it's enough to be offside.

Look at it this way, that was a clear set piece routine from Villa, what purpose was Rogers running over there for if it wasn't to distract the defender?

You can’t claim you aren’t impacting play when part of the routine was to block the defender.

“Interferes”, how often do you think that happens in corners ?

You see , the issue is consistent application , you will see that sort of stuff going unpunished in many many many games.

It's a penalty:

Great commentary btw.

It was a pen to Liverpool. The fact that the initial angle is inconclusive is obviously irrelevant but it offers space for confected outrage.

You can't be offside from a corner.

I get there definitely should be more consistency... But that should consistently be offside.
