VAR, Refs and Linesmen | General Discussion

In some way, it's annoying that United won the game. The referee was so bad that had you lost, something would have had to happen. Now United have done their little harmless tweet and got through, the FA will wash their hands of the whole thing.
Did Amorim say something in his interviews ?

Doubt the FA have the bollocks to punish him after the state of that refereeing display

There was no punishments after the cock up for Bruno’s red card against Tottenham, or Michael Oliver’s imaginary penalty for West Ham, so i’d be very surprised if there’s any punishment for this display.

Why would the FA be punishing shite refs in a PL game?

Look on his works ye people, and despair

I don't know how it works in England, but I know professional referees in Scotland they get made to rewatch their performances and questions get asked. How could anyone justify this clowns performance?

I didn’t refer to punishment. But based on the unanimous condemnation of the referee yesterday, I doubt they would compound that by handing out retrospective punishments for a situation like the Ugarte one.

"So right here I noticed that it was the player in white committing the foul so I ignored it and here you can probably see why I gave that one. Correct! Its because a player in white threw themselves to the ground. I hope that clears up any questions you might have"

That really wouldn’t surprise me.

For Ugarte, i don’t think there’s much room for it, there’s no clear headbutt, it’s similar to the Walker situation where they have heads together and then there’s obviously a bit of a push. I have no doubt they will also ignore Havertz having his hand around Ugarte’s throat.

They’d be more inclined to punish both clubs with a fine for failure to control players rather than trying to hand out individual bans.

Why is there no accountability when it comes to match officials? Why can't they face the press after a match and have to review their performance just like players and managers?

Would it be so bad for them to, once in a while, come out and just say "Hands up, I had a bad day, wasn't my best performance". Instead we see an official like yesterday and it's never addressed, nor do the media want to talk about it. A player has a bad day and costs his team a match and they have to face the gauntlet. These are supposed to be professional referees, take some accountability.

Football missed a trick by trying to operate a one-size-fits-all VAR system.

Referee decisions should be final, and each manager should have a set number of challenges per half/per game to look at something which looks questionable.

They shouldn’t be allowed live footage or replays on the bench either imo.

It was refreshing to watch a game where celebrating or being frustrated was instantaneous and not based on waiting for a man in Stockley Park to support his mate.

Have thought about this, how would it be implemented? Manager would have to make an instantaneous decision or the ball would be put back in play and it cannot be reviewed. Or would you suggest they have so much time after an incident to throw their challenge flag? But what if the other team is attacking at that moment etc. Can see it being a bit of a challenge to implement.

I'm just thinking of the NFL system which is a bit easier since there is some time in between plays and they do have access to replays to make a decision before challenging.

How much trust is there in that process? We are told that happens but it's basically putting faith in the system, a system which is always protecting the officials, as we can see by the former officials on TV and the head of officials defending so many dodgy decisions.

So they will say this is in place, but we never see them take any accountability for a poor performance. Don't see why someone can't come out after a match and just say it wasn't the best today...just like a player or manager has to.

If we don't want referees being personalities and talking points, having them interviewed live after each game would be a terrible idea.

Yes it would be a terrible idea, however they could do a written report explaining their decisions/thinking etc 24-48 hours after a game, that would bering a little accountability

I honestly can't get my head around the sort of sad sacks who would a) demand and b) read such a report. I'm sure the referee's performances are reviewed and they're accountable to their employer. I have absolutely no interest in getting involved in that process, personally.

Some of the highlights from the terrible performance from the refs.

My overwhelming takeaway from that is that Arsenal are a bunch of despicable, diving, cheating cnuts.

I obviously want VAR killed with fire but I would be fully on board with some sort of retrospective video review of every match with individuals and teams punished for a cumulative number of obvious attempts to con the referee. I would even include claiming for corners/throw ins when it's obvious they know they played the ball last. That would actually improve football as a spectacle, in contrast to VAR, which is doing the opposite.

Referees are a bit like the NYPD. They can show partiality, corruptness and generally make mistakes to the point of incompetence and negligence, and yet, not one of their own will appraise them aright, or judge them accordingly.

It's the "boys in blue", but the refereeing variant.

That aside, did anyone notice during the penalties that the referee had a word with almost every Arsenal penalty taker?

I keep saying this but we need to scrap English referees, bring some Spanish and Italian refs over here. Absolute shocking. Every single week theirs games that have the same issue but different punishments for them. Ridiculous

They are anti-football. A team so focused on set pieces, that they do nothing other than attempt to create set piece situations at the expense of all else, including any pretence at actually playing football. They're a horrible aberration and they're clearly miserable like the poor saps stuck in an innovation department in a corporate hellscape managed by some prick who refers to himself as a "disruptor" on his email signature.

I'm sure there are reviews done but they're not made public and the evidence so far seems their bosses do feck all anyway, personally I wouldn't read them either!

But if you want some semblence of accountability it's never going to be refs being interviewed after a match, what else is there?

Do you really think the average Spanish/Italian refs are any better?

Game against Arsenal was nothing new. We had those kind of games and decisions for years now. I'm not even slightly surprised about this. This will keep happening until our club decide to put out official statement and demand explanation about every decision that have gone against us that felt very wrong. At the same time demand release cam and mic in our games so we can hear and see what is happening.

We can't have season after season where we lose 20-30 points.

We shouldn't be surprised at the state of his performance, Emirates FA Cup in a match at the Emirates stadium and he does everything in his power to try and get the home team to win.

Let's see if he gets a a City home game this year, although they'll probably get Oliver to ref it.

Like I said, I'm sure they have performance reviews with their bosses. That's why we hear about referees being dropped or not chosen for big games. It's a difficult job and they get a lot of scrutiny from everyone. I don't buy the idea that they operate without any accountability. I also don't care about this refereeing issue half as much as some of you seem to. It is what it is. They do tend to get most decisions right (or, at the very least, you can see why they made them) with only one or two really obvious mistakes in any given match. Same as most footballers.

He kept looking at the big screen, looking for help or a replay of a given situation, to actually see what had actually happened. He was so out of his depth yesterday. I mean, he had to know that he messed up judging by the reaction of our players, who normally don't protest when a decision goes against them. I always assumed that the criteria for a penalty without VAR had to be much higher. But yesterday, dear me. Mistake after mistake. Bruno's boot was off, that was another sign there was contact. This guy has to go to Specsavers, blind Michael Maddsen lookalike cnut.

Just like any performance issues, nothing will change until there is accountability built into it. Refs should be mic'd up and we should be able to listen in real time to VAR reviews. They should have to come out after matches and answer questions from the media. I'm not saying they should be abused and drug through the mud, but they should be accountable for their performances and it should be in part, addressed directly to the public.

He could never explain.
When you know the reality, you understand when it is a mistake and when it is more than that.
