VAR, Refs and Linesmen | General Discussion

Although he's fecked up, he doesn't deserve what he's going through regarding the media storm really. Hopefully he can go into rehab and get his life sorted. Suspend him for the rest of the season, make sure he gets his life back on track and then reassess him again in the summer.

Depends what else there is. You suddenly have videos that are fairly fecking old, and texts, then the more recent «white powder» stuff all surfacing at the same time, so it would be interesting to know why it’s happened now. I think he could’ve kept his job in regards to calling Klopp out on video, the rest of it not so much. He’s obviously in an absolutely shit situation, so i hope they have a proper setup taking care of him, no matter how useless he is as a referee

Seems like a case of blackmail to me. If it is just the drug situation/videos then I think there is a way back for him. Anything more sinister, nope.

Well I don't, He gets what he deserves for not having the balls to stick to his original decision with that West Ham penalty, absolutely gutless.

In a time where Michael Oliver should be getting dragged through hot coals for that decision, this has all come out at such a convenient time.

Seems he is a protected species these days and we even got a new manager in to further remove the focus away from this complete idiot.

I'd say there's 115 reasons why Oliver is being protected

I don't think that he's an addict that needs to go to rehab, sounds like a run of the mill millennial male to me. Feel sorry for him now, this could be done to a large chunk the male population, hopefully he has some people looking after him.

Its very very obvious he's being blackmailed.
Even worse: It's probably a clear sign that there's an environment where many refs can be expected to be blackmailed, since Coote is put out there for everyone to see what happens when you don't go along with the bribe-men/blackmailers. The purpose is more likely to get the next referee to pay attention, than Coote.

If you're trying to organise a drug party while you're in the middle of officiating a game I think it's fair to say you have a problem.

I can almost guarantee that 'organising a drug party' is him sending his mates a text saying 'Anyone going for a few pints and lines later?' or something silly like that.

Sounds like something you’d be asked by somebody who is clearly an undercover police officer. “Hey guys, do you wanna go to a drugs party?”
"Hopefully not this tuesday? I'll be attending a beating-up-hookers and heroine par-taaay. Stuart Atwell's coming!"

If you read the article it's a bit more than that. He was booking hotel rooms 10 minutes before kick off.

So he allegedly snorted white powder, hates one of the most famous Germans in football and was partially responsible for VAR during the Spain Germany quarter final where Germany should've had that pen in extra time?

In fairness I've read absolutely none of any article, just throwing opinions out there. Sounds like he was just organising a session to me.

Which is fair enough but if you're in the position he is in, the behaviour he's exhibited - being filmed looking drugged up and saying things he shouldn't be, being filmed taking drugs and also organising sessions or whatever while you're officiating a game - indicate to me that it's a bit more than just a regular bloke having a session with pals and it's someone with a problem.

"Addict" can mean a lot of things. But it's fair to say that someone has a problem with drugs as soon as they start making really terrible, stupid decisions while taking them. Such as a professional referee allowing himself to be filmed by randos, talking smack about a PL manager, or recording himself taking coke and whatsapp'ing the video to other people. Those are major red flags about someone in need of an intervention.

I think he just sounds like a moron. It's worth remembering that referees are essentially footballers that weren't even good at football. His best option to save face is probably to say he has a drug problem, though.

Most of us can remove our red tinted glasses and feel sorry for him on a human level. He's obviously having serious issues outside of football.

That is exactly how it should be used. Professional and the VAR doesn’t try and guide the ref either way. Just provides the objective facts.

Then you have the Oliver use and comms on the De Ligt incident in contrast.

Staggering lack of consistency and skill.

I know, I really dont understand why there are so many Arsenal fans who are in tears about this decision and claiming its part of some kind of conspiracy against them when it was a clear red card and VAR was used correctly

Suspend the league this season
I think the only reasonable thing is to call the entire season null and void and start again from the scratch, maybe we’ll end up a bit higher!

I'm surprised they even have access to their phones at half-time, surely anti-corruption rules wouldn't allow that?

I think sometimes the pool of referees is too narrow. I don't accept there's going to be a huge difference in quality between officials in the Championship vs the Premier League. The same referee shouldn't ref the same club more than a couple of times a season. The high profile games shouldn't be given to a small group of two or three officials. What causes suspicion about bias and underhand activity is partially familiarity with the officials. Fans instantly be able to recollect several contentious decisions because the same guy's refereed half their games in the season.

Officiating needs to stop feeling like a closed shop of mates who'll vouch for each other. You're never going to get faith in VAR or anything else with that. We need to see different referees, who aren't part of an elite clique. I don't buy that only a small handful of officials are good enough to take charge of a premier league game. They're not elite sportsmen, they're referees. Let's widen the pool and stop it looking like a bit of a gentlemen's club that fans don't trust.

Great idea, at least in theory. The overall standard of refereeing would need to be improved greatly though, but who knows, maybe more "competition" from rotation would keep the refs on their feet too.

There should probably be some incentives too for getting the matches in the first place, maybe based on how many correct or blatantly faulty decisions you make.

Good point, i really thought they'd have to give up any communication devices in a locked cabinet until the end of the game.
Also, don't they get drug tested ?

This one is a perfect use of VAR by the officials, on-field decision was incorrect so VAR rightfully intervened to request a review

Correct decision. Process seemed sound for once and they at least showed the on-field ref multiple angles to make his decision.

But they still ruined it by calling it Dogso!

If he can just organise a coup in a small African nation that should be enough for an MBE

Why would they be drugs tested?
I don't know, they get performance and fitness tests at the start of each season and maybe again during the season. Plus it's football and it's England, cocaine use seems to be quite high. I would assume there is some sort of control and procedures in place around them. Guess not.

I see what you mean but it's really only athletes and jobs where impairment would mean you'd be putting lives at risk where people get drug tested.

Cocaine could absolutely 100% impair your judgement as a referee.
