VAR, Refs and Linesmen | General Discussion

It is. A stupid tweet.

So you think he's robbed Liverpool of titles?

Is it a stupid tweet if it's just pointing out his record with them is extremely similar to their overall record in two of the last four seasons, and that Cootes has basically nothing to do with how many league titles they won?

Edit: I've also just looked and one of the losses was a 3-2 in the league cup against City, and the other was an FA Cup game against Brighton, described by the Guardian as a game in which "Coote treats Liverpool leniently over three potential red card offences".

The only other game they didn't win with him as ref was a draw after they'd won the league in 19/20.

Christ you’re tedious. I’ve literally just explained why it’s a stupid tweet. And no, I don’t think he’s robbed them of titles. Which is an opinion it’s possible to hold without posting/sharing stupid tweets.

So you think it's a stupid tweet because it points out losing at a rate of 9.5 losses a season, when they've actually 'only' lost at most 9 games (twice in the past four seasons) and that's a drastic difference?

Finally. The penny drops. Trying to argue that a referee hasn't cost Liverpool titles by pointing out that the frequency of defeats they suffered when he was a referee would, in fact, mean they never win titles is indeed stupid. But not as stupid as this argument. So I'm out.

"Snorting a white powder"

What, is cocaine a bad word?

Guess he just snorted up some baking soda then.
It’s allegedly cocaine. Could be anything. They can legally say he’s seen in the video snorting a white powder they can’t allege otherwise.

Well you asked "when was the last time they lost that many?" and the answer was "twice, very recently".

It all sort of went from there when you then tried to argue the half game between 9 and 9.5 games.

This one is a perfect use of VAR by the officials, on-field decision was incorrect so VAR rightfully intervened to request a review

It's a good outcome but the process is the same problematic approach that caused the West Ham penalty against us. The VAR official decides the outcome he wants and only shows the referee the footage he thinks will convince the referee to make the call he wants. The referee is supposed to be making the call and he should be leading the review. Which is what they do in rugby.

An alternative approach would be the ref hands over to VAR and VAR tells them what the decision should be (they do this in field hockey)

As it stands, this whole pitchside review in football is a pointless charade, wasting everyone's time waiting for a decision we all know in advance. And VAR slows down the game enough as it is.

Yeah, that’s excellent. Really clear what they are considering, talks the ref through what they’ve analysed and shows him the angles he needs to make a decision. The ref had clearly initially thought White was in a better position to cover.

VAR is a brilliant idea in itself, but was always going to be a disaster with the bias and the borderline corruption among the referees. Hate to say it, but I honestly enjoy football less after it.

Do find it strange that he appeared to be using an American dollar note

It’s a thing. Cokeheads often carry round a dedicated, rolled up dollar bill. Never been too sure why. Maybe they think it makes them look gangsta?

If he likes the bag he likes the bag. Being at the euros isn't gonna stop him, If anything it'll encourage so long as they're not getting drug tested.

That's not a thing. Atleast not in the UK.

It is, to be fair. I know people that do that (definitely not me).

Most bank notes now are made of plastic, which is more likely to cut the inside of your nose than paper notes.

It also makes more sense to have a foreign note so you don't end up trying to spend a note covered in powder that keeps rolling up when you hand it over.

Not that I know from experience, I usually just bury my head in a massive pile like Tony Montana.

It could just be a disloyal and mercenary and click hungry ‘friend’. Looks suspicious though, like a blackmail setup. Who stood to benefit? Was it criminal? Or something else? Needs a thorough examination I’d say.

I really want to know why the feck an englishman was carrying around dollars in Germany

Think it's turned into a bit of a witch hunt, someone is obviously out to get him.

It’s all a bit odd. The original video doesn’t really look like a few mates just messing around (why doesn’t he just tell them to delete it rather than say it can’t be sent anywhere else - whilst still being videoed)? Is anyone really insane enough to decide to video themselves taking an illegal substance and send it off to a random mate? Why have both been released this week, when the suggestion seems to be they are from different sources?

That is exactly how it should be used. Professional and the VAR doesn’t try and guide the ref either way. Just provides the objective facts.

Then you have the Oliver use and comms on the De Ligt incident in contrast.

Staggering lack of consistency and skill.

Who in fecks name calls it a ‘drugs party’?

The guy who is leaking all this is an absolutely prize c@nt. He’s clearly been planning this for some time. The day The Sun finally closes down will be a great day. Poisonous rag.

It probably got lost in translation from dutch. Heh.

The last answer is pretty obvious. It’s a hot topic and I’m sure that The Sun (I think they were the first to publish it?) and the likes paid a hefty sum for the video.

It’s why usually when it rains it pours.

I won’t be surprised if other referees are dragged into it. WhatsApp group messages, text messages, audio, whatever The Sun will be offering money for anything incriminating
