VAR, Refs and Linesmen | General Discussion

10 yards, yeah?

Simple stuff this, can't believe top refs can't sort this out.

Lisansro Martinez should probably be off for those elbows

I dunno. Think it would have been a soft one, but could similarly have not really had any complaints had he been. Definitely towing the line.

Definitely soft but I could see certain refs sending him off for that, especially if var gets involved

I calculated the distance of the wall and it is over 15 yards away

In which other top level sport would a video referee allow the on-field referee to make a mistake of over 50% error in their judgment?

Martinez just held the ball in hand for 33 seconds. Nice enforcing of the 6 seconds rule.

The reverse fixture last year was one of the lowest in-ball duration of any game that season, something like 58 minutes. Martinez was doing a full stretch routine before every goal-kick. He's a shithouse for time wasting. It's a form of cheating so easily corrected with a warning, yellow card then red card. There is no excuse for it still being present in the modern game.

Martinez, Villa goalie, should have been sent off and a clear pen for the assault on Elanga. Terrible ref again.

Never a pen that. Fantastic goalkeeping.

So you condone a straight leg studs first challenge to the head as long as you get the ball? Great defending or a straight red? It’s exactly the same. He could have seriously injured Elanga.

Oh shit, you're being serious? Genuinely thought you was joking. Never a pen. Never a red. Not even a foul. Really good goalkeeping.

Completely dissgree. Dangerous play.Goalies always get away with it - used to be one - and it’s utter bollocks. Means you can pretty much do what you want. Dangerous play! No doubt.

What's the keeper meant to do instead though? He has to try and make a save (and he does)

Sure thing buddy.

You can’t stud someone in the face because you want to get the ball? As far as I know, goalies have the same set of rules. It’s clearly dangerous play.

But your studs shouldn't be at head height - a keepers hands can be a head height.

It doesn't look great, but you want your keeper to be proactive/making a save in a scenario like that. If he doesn't get the ball it's an obvious penalty.

Are you just saying this generally here or are you suggesting Martinez studded Elanga in the face..?

But he follows through. If you make a tackle and detract your leg, fine. If you follow through you can seriously injure someone, like Martinez. It’s too violent. Just as if a defender comes in with similar force it shouldn’t matter if you get the ball.

Didn't Casemiro do one of those in the first half, won the ball but one of those scissor kick tackles. Don't think we even got a free kick out of it.

He looked like he was pulling his hands away to be fair - Also he had open palms, think its a different story if its a fist.

Like in a tackle, follow through without studs is largely fine, but with studs then it's an issue.
