VAR, Refs and Linesmen | General Discussion

usually they show the the checks on TV for the VAR checks, but felt like nothing was shown today. I didn’t watch the other games, but is this a new thing? Or just this game
It was weird. Announcers were so sure on Maguire being held yet showed nothing. Happened a couple of times

Was there a big stoppage? Actually can't remember much at all apart from the var check on the goal
I thought maybe. Just maybe 5 min. How they got over 8 min We will never know. Or maybe we do know why.

City get a pen for being brought down on a corner but we don’t… ok!

That ManCity penalty rule is only being used once. Against us. You have not seen it before and not after in this year PL. We know why.

Kabore could have been sent off twice today.

Stamped on Garnacho's foot, then mullered Rashford in an aerial challenge where there was no intent to win the ball.

That was a properly dangerous challenge. Tagging in @Anustart89 for yet another example of where they clearly don’t give a shit about an important organ like the brain but God forbid a player gets a bruised shin…

Missed that one as I was out, but Kulusevski on Sá is another one from earlier today.

Sees that he's late to the ball, makes no attempt to change direction or jump over the keeper and knees him in the head. That's how Cech was made to wear a helmet for the rest of his career. PL ref's reaction? Drop ball.

It’s so mad.

Was listening to a colleague of mine on the radio in a lengthy interview. He's a former ref and is currently a referee observers for UEFA matches (former refs who go to games to give back reports on how well the refs do their job). One point he made about how VAR is poorly implemented in England and frankly done wrongly is the misuse of "clear and obvious error". The VAR protocols that the VAR refs adhere by and the training they receive states that the reveiws should be done very quickly. If a VAR review takes a long time and/or you have many VAR stoppages in one match then the refs are doing something wrong. They are supposed to be quickly determined because it's not clear and obvious if multiple angles and slow-motion can't change the on-field verdict.

He also said that another big problems with the refs is that they are afraid to make decisions. They would rather not do anything and let VAR correct them. They should be much more confident in making on-field calls. Game is supposed to be refereed for the most part the same as it was before VAR, just in the cases where there are obvious big mistakes VAR steps in and only then.

He called Szymon Marciniak the current best ref in the world because he makes his own calls, takes no shit from players and very rarely does VAR intervene in his matches.

I guess the difference is that Maguire is also wrestling with the Luton player but Rodri was grabbed when he didn’t have any hands on Hojlund?

The lack of replays are annoying but probably a factor of one game being stopped for several minutes while the check was over in seconds in the other.
Difference is teams. Lets face it. This year in PL, did anyone got a penalty like ManCity got against us? I can’t remember. I hardly remember any penalties at all for those situations.

Like people said before. If VAR was consistent with these type of wrestling during corner kick, there would be pen every week, not once in a blue moon.

Still fecking amazing they gave it in a derby and nothing afterward. Imagine this happen in el classico, Perez would call police. Its a crime

That’s a fundamental problem with VAR that is unsolvable. It’s human nature for refs to behave like that. Completely understandable.

Sorry if this is posted already, but what a difference this is to PL VAR use:

That's quite the defeatism. VAR is the biggest problem in England of all places. If they are performing worse than others there is a reason for it. Better training will help them, clear guidelines followed by regular feedback. Someone mentioned that there are no VAR teams. It's just a mismatch of people each weekend. It stands to reason that having set teams of people will make communication easier and therefor the refereeing will improve.

Human nature isn't an obsticle. We raise our kids to not murder each other because we live in a civilized society. Human nature for many people is fight when agitated. Most people learn to not do that because you don't have to.

UEFA and FAs should also host media training. There's so much misinformation because nothing is properly explained. Remember the tweet earlier in this thread? A reporter reminding people of the FIFA statement 7 years ago about VAR should only take 6-10 seconds on average. That should totally be possible for most cases. I've probably sat in a broadcast van in over 1000 sports broadcasts and I know first hand how quickly you can spot incidents with multiple angles in front of you with the ability to rewind and fast forward at will. The fact that a referee sometimes is called to the sidelines to check himself is a failure of VAR. If you can't confidently make a different decision in the VAR room then the on-field decision isn't clearly and obviously wrong.

I'm thinking about using AI for VAR. Even if we still get the errors at least there'd be some consistency and no bias.

This is the way to get respectability back to the refs. Open and accountable. If you have nothing to hide then just release the audio

We should be making a huge fuss about this. It was a clear choice not to show these replays. After both incidents there was plenty of time to show them. On my commentary they were obviously watching the replays and said one was probably a penalty. But nothing was shown to us and I can only think that it was to stop the controversy over the clear inconsistency.

As I said. Our club needs to understand how they should protect itself. Until then, We are going to have refs, VAR, media and few more against us. So far they have not learned anything.
Club needs to demand answers. We need to have official statements. We should demand transparency with mics and cam. We should demand lot more.

No red for me, 50/50 challenge

It's not for me either..... but in terms of consistency, it absolutely is a red now, and this is where the problems are. Decisions are essentially coming down to whether the ref fancies punishing 50/50 stuff based on a screenshot of studs showing or similar.

City are getting favourable decisions on a very consistent basis now. This is ridiculous
