VAR, Refs and Linesmen | General Discussion

Pundits saying its not clear and obvious error now. Where's that line been for months?

Theyre being told to, its pretty obvious how bad refs have become and pundits are being told to dial back in criticism. Its so bad this season it's almost a write off of a season

One, it was but regardless, this “clear and obvious” thing has to be ignored because they’re looking at it too black and white and being selective. If it’s a goal or pen and VAR thinks ref might be wrong, just ask him to have a look at replays/angles.

They say they don’t want to re-ref games but they are SOMETIMES.

We‘ve got technology and we’re not using it to ensure key decisions are right.

And while I’m clearly biased, it’s hard not to think decisions go against United/for City (and Arsenal and Newcastle to a lesser extent).

There‘ll always be human errors even with VAR, but we could reduce them.

Was a clear foul. The type players always play for. It's actually laughable how lucky city get. Also fairly sure it's a handball given the way those have been going against goalscorers in past 2 seasons

Surely it was a foul on Gallagher in the build up to this?
Unfortunately not given, and match restarted since it was given a City throw-in instead of a Chelsea freekick, so that handcuffs them I assume. But yea that was annoying.

The penalty decision in the first half is mental. If they decide that the tug by Cucurella warrants a penalty, then surely Haalands pull on Cucurella to get in front of him, which is rather obvious, should cancel it out and result in a Chelsea freekick. How they completely overlook that segment, and only focus on the last second, is beyond me.

How was this not a straight red card?

You’re looking at a still. Isn’t that what we’ve been complaining about? You can take a still of almost any passage of play and there would be a foul in there somehow. Maybe you didn’t watch the match because if you did you would have realized that it’s not a red. Looks like you’re a proponent of VAR .

Rodri pulls players back constantly throughout every game and gets away with nothing. Did it 3 times in about 10 seconds and nothing given at all. Yet hoijland touches him at a corner and he's given a pen. City have gotten away with tactical fouls for years

Why do managers keep their players on pitch?
This is what you get when clubs don’t go out and say enough. Refuse to play until There is equal chance for teams. Not when you know that ref is on their side.

I fail to comprehend how a ref is dropped a level down after a major error yet gets a reprieve a week later to officiate the reigning champions match. It reeks of incompetence and gives fuel to other beliefs.
Not only dropped down (though why lower league clubs should have to suffer is odd… just suspend him for a week?), but in the Preston Coventry game, he made ANOTHER mistake… gave a pen and EFL have come out and agreed not a penalty.

His punishment this time… … straight back to ref the City match. Unbelievable

If rashford was a red then context doesn't matter.

Even in the still it's doubtful it's a red. Whoever's posted that on twitter is using a still taken before the point of contact because this is the angle at which the challenge looks worse. This type of stuff is a bit pathetic and undermines the criticism of actual bad decisions.

I didn't think Rashfords was a red but loads on here claimed it was endangering an opponent. If that is the case Endo is guilty of the same thing as he goes studs first into the opponents knee

Look at where his put is, he is high up on the players leg with his stoods up, thats dangerous so is a red

He barely touches him with the follow through. It isn't dangerous or reckless as the level of force is quite low.
The camera showed the Brentford player’s knee with blood and the mark of the studs.
In live you could clearly see Endo went in studs up with no control whatsoever and rushing in to make up for a bad first touch.
It was at the very least a yellow and going on by the kind of challenges that were deemed of a red this season, then this one should have been a 100% red

All apply to Rashford and Casemiro challenges but we've repeatedly been told this is irrelevant by pundits.

I'm dont know who you've been listening to but level of force and words like reckless and dangerous are in the rules.

When Red Cards Are Warranted

1. Serious Foul Play: A red card is issued for actions that constitute serious foul play. This includes tackles that are reckless, involve excessive force, or endanger the safety of an opponent

I've seen the replay and it looked a yellow to me. It certainly wasn't a leg-breaker and breaking the skin doesn't constitute a red card.

Because they are smart enough not to forfeit a match due to not liking the refereeing decisions.

Taylor was ok today, don't have a problem with any of the calls.

Seems people are getting hysterical now even when the referees do fine.

You serious? City got a goal head start because of a terrible decision. Even if he's perfect for the rest of the game, that's huge.

Bit of joint pulling then Cucu is wrong side and puts his hand around his waist to stop him getting to the ball, that's a foul 8 days a week. He wasn't getting to the ball anyway either, which is probably why it was a yellow. Stupid.

Yeah, that wasn't a red, much the same way Rashford's shouldn't have been a red.

Get a still of Dawson with his boot in Son's nuts yesterday and it will look like a red.

Ofcourse it’s a foul by Cucurella, but isn’t the entire point here that Haaland equally fouls Cucurella in order to get in front of him in the very same sequence of play.

There both on the floor though, it's not a particularly high challenge nor has it got alot of force behind it.

It would be fair to call it careless bordering on reckless so yellow card is fair.

Here's the thing I don't get. Re the Endo tackle, they've spent 5 minutes checking it for a red, so it must be obvious to Tierney that this is a close one, one of those "orange cards" that could go either way.

Eventually word comes down from VAR that it's not a red. Fine, whatever. But surely if they've spent that f**king long looking at it, it must be at least a free kick to Brentford and a yellow to Endo!

And yes, I know VAR doesn't check for yellows or free kicks so Tierney was obliged to just restart play again with a throw in, but it's a real anomaly of VAR (one of the many).

Did Endo get a yellow for that tackle?

I assumed he did, but just checked and apparently not. So yeah should of been a yellow ref is looking straight at it aswell, poor call from the ref that. VAR can't call for a yellow card and it's not enough for a red in fairness.

Yeah, see my previous post at the end of the previous page about the anomaly in this process. Spend 5 minutes checking if it's a red, and at the end of it nothing, not even a free kick or a yellow is awarded! Utterly dysfunctional system!

He’s only on the wrong side because Haaland yanked him back to gain territorial advantage. Clear foul for Chelsea that. Laughable penalty.

From the what I saw in the reply they both had a hold of eachother were it may have canceled out, but then Haaland let go and made the run Cucurella kept holding him and bought him down hence why they may have given Haaland the advantage.

Second reply shows a good angle as I said it seems Cucurella kept holding him that led to the PK, but again something could be missing in this video.

Not sure i understand your take on this. Haaland quite clearly takes hold of Cucurella and drags him back so that he gets infront of him, when he’s gained his advantage there’s no need to keep holding. There’s no way you can isolate these two situations, the only reason Haaland gets infront of Cucurella is because he fouls him by pulling him back and out of balance.

I can completely understand that Anthony Taylor doesn’t see this, because he’s looking out wide until the cross is hit and only then does he look into the box, where Cucurella can be seen fouling Haaland.

VAR however, should definetely sort out situations like this.
