US Politics

I just finally read that Forbes interview. Wow, he talks some nonsense with the 'mark of the beast' stuff about vaccines (@Wibble rejects this theory) and his inability to utter more than two sentences without dragging God into the conversation.

Everyone: Trump is the most unstable lunatic to ever be President
Kanye Kardashian: Hold my beer.

What do people think about the climate change task force made up from both Biden and Sanders' people and co-chaired by AOC and Kerry?

I hope that Biden fully endorses it. Despite not being much based on nuclear (which IMO is wrong), it would be amazing if the US really goes carbon-free within 15 years. And by doing so, the technology would become cheaper, essentially forcing other countries to adopt similar policies.

On first impressions, this seems a mischaracterization of the ruling. It is limited to serious crimes being tried in tribal courts as opposed to state courts, in this case an alleged child sex predator trying to have the original trial against him dismissed.

It is mostly just window dressing. A Democrat in office will be far better for the environment, EPA department, and related matters. But if anyone expects him to adopt the Green New Deal as a policy objective, they are in for a disappointment.

I thought it meant the trials would have to be in federal courts not state courts. I didn’t see mention of tribal courts.
I’ve only be to OK briefly so no idea about it but are there competing claims to 1/2 of the state?
The Indians were driven from east coast states to OK so presumably it’s their land then?

I don't think this was supposed to be The New Deal. To be fair, I never read Green New Deal itself, but I read Sanders's policy on climate change and was extremely disappointed with it. I hope Green New Deal was better than it.

This one, being co-chaired from AOC will probably have many parts of Green New Deal.

Ah, right, Federal court for Major Crimes and tribal for lesser offenses as the state would have no jurisdiction over an Indian in that matter if committed on Indian territory. It applies to governance of their people within borders established by treaties with the Five Tribes that were never explicitly overturned, hence Gorsuch signing off on it.

Ownership of specific areas of land is a different matter which this does not apply to.

What does this mean for previous convictions (and potential appeals) - many of which were presumably now handed down by the wrong court

West Virginia mail carrier admits attempted election fraud

ELKINS, W.Va. (AP) — A West Virginia postal carrier pleaded guilty Thursday to altering mail-in requests for absentee voter ballots.

Thomas Cooper entered the plea in federal court in Elkins to attempted election fraud and injury to the mail, U.S. Attorney Bill Powell said in a statement.

Cooper was charged in May after eight mail-in requests for absentee voter ballots had their party affiliations altered.

Cooper, 47, of Dry Fork, held a postal contract to pick up mail in the three towns in which the voters live and delivered the forms in April to the Pendleton County clerk, according to a federal affidavit.

An investigation by the Secretary of State’s office found five of the ballot requests were changed from Democrat to Republican with a black ink pen, the affidavit said.

Bennie Cogar, an attorney general’s office investigator who conducted the probe on behalf of the Secretary of State’s office, said in the affidavit that the Pendleton County clerk called some of the voters after receiving the requests because she knew they were not Republicans. The clerk then contacted the Secretary of State’s office to report the alterations.

On the other three requests, the voters’ party was not changed. However, in addition to the “Republican” box originally checked in blue ink, the word “Republican” was later circled in black ink, the affidavit said.

Cooper admitted in an interview with Cogar and a postal inspector that he changed some of the requests he picked up from the Onega post office from Democrat to Republican.

According to the affidavit, when he was then asked about the other requests, Cooper said, “I’m not saying no,” but if the requests were picked up along his postal route, “I would take the blame.” Cooper was then asked if he was “just being silly” and he replied he did it “as a joke” and that he didn’t know those voters.

Absentee ballots became a political flashpoint nationally in recent months, often along partisan lines. Some state governors have moved to make absentee ballots more available in this year’s elections because of concerns about the spread of the coronavirus. Other elected officials, including President Donald Trump, have raised concerns that expanding the practice would increase the likelihood of election fraud. Examples of mail-in ballot fraud have been minimal, and Trump himself has voted absentee in recent elections.

Absentee ballot applications were mailed to all registered voters in West Virginia in April in a bid to encourage mail-in voting during the coronavirus pandemic. West Virginia held its primary election on June 9.

In the end, a whole mess of paperwork for court clerks on appeals that mostly won’t go anywhere so far as I can tell. Most won’t qualify because they are not getting the 1 year Federal appeal window extended or if they have already appealed but did not include this in their case. Many have already been shut down, as appeals started rising once this worked its way up the courts.

I find Cruz the most disgusting of Republicans. Sure, you have con men who are evil and dumb like Trump, evil people who are smart like McConnell, and then we have pathetic disgusting pieces of shit like Cruz.

I mean, Trump called him the biggest liar ever, called his wife ugly, said that his father killed Kennedy and Cruz still jumped to kiss Trump's arse and do an erotic dance for him. Even his insistence to not use a mask is just another gesture on kissing Trump's arse.

To anyone celebrating the recent Supreme Court decisions or presuming the court is somehow not as bad as it seems read this article:

"The decision means that existing federal law forbids employers from discriminating against LGBTQ individuals.

But the reasoning in the decision suggests that victory will be limited in significant ways in the near future. For example, the opinion went out of its way to suggest that another statute, the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, might prevent Title VII from prohibiting discrimination by employers who have religious objections. Indeed, the author of the Title VII opinion, Justice Neil Gorsuch, joined an opinion in another case that concluded the Religious Freedom Restoration Act allows religious exemptions to another statute, the Affordable Care Act. In the Title VII, DACA, and Louisiana abortion cases, the outcomes appeared to be progressive while the reasoning signaled forthcoming wins for the conservative legal movement."

He sounds like the perfect follow-up to Trump.

I don’t get it.

AOC tweets that she has reached a certain rank ("Silver 3") in the video game League of Legends as her "quarantine accomplishment"

Random intellectual tries to shame her rank in the game, claims that much higher rank is reachable within the first couple of hours of playing the game. Puts forward the theory that being "bad" at this game translates to her ability as a congresswoman.

I don't really know anything about the game, but google brought up this chart:

Which makes it look like she's actually "decent" for a casual player.

So did Elizabeth Warren grow up on tribal land? Pocahontas indeed.
OK City in eastern OK? I suppose parts of it are.
I didn't know that you could be considered Native if you are a citizen of a tribe, and you don't necessarily have to have native blood. There's hope for me yet.

I saw that. This is where Bezos or some other insanely wealthy asshole should just step up and pay off the fees. Trump's meltdown would be epic.
That would be pretty awesome.
