US Politics

Supreme Court rules Trump Admin can not cancel DACA with Roberts writing the majority opinion. When you add this to the LGBTQ win from earlier in the week I am honestly shocked. The Supreme Court is not acting in the way the GOP thought it would when they tried to stack it. Is it too much to ask for a third thunderbolt with the Electoral College decision?
I think the electoral college thing is pretty fringe-y right? It's just about unfaithful electors?

Interestingly, Hamilton was a big fan of unfaithful electors, with the belief that they're more able to select an appropriate president than the masses.

This is the kinda shit that goes unnoticed at times of crisis. While MSM obsesses over polls or a stupid book release. Just insane.

These things sicken me, and it's so easy to pass laws that prohibit this kind of thing. We'll probably discover the remuneration committee was manned by the CEO's wife, daughter, mentee and minature poodle.

True, but Hamilton also referred to political parties as the "fatal disease" of popular governments. I do not think he would have been so high on unfaithful electors in our current climate of severe partisanship.

Tis true. Parties were kind of against the framers' point really. Oh well, should really have seen it coming!

Aren't a large chunk of the stories referenced from there from the "MSM"?

Yes, they are, the problem is usually with priority, presentation, and most importantly where they are (mostly-unread newspapers, not widely-watched TV)

Dirty Wars is on Hulu and is about to expire soon. It follows Jeremy Scahill investigating a night-time raid in Afghanistan in 2010, which leads to McRaven, Special Forces directly under the President, and a famous strike in Yemen.

I'd been meaning to to see this for years, and really recommend it.

e- just remembered, film was in 2013 when Obama targeted and killed, without a trial, an Al-Qaeda friendly cleric, 2 weeks later, his 16-year old son. But at that point his daughter was still alive, she was killed by a raid Trump ordered just after coming to power, she was 8 at the time. If Biden comes in he should have the honour and privilege of murdering the remaining relatives. Of course there is a lot of focus on American citizens, beause men aged 16-65 born in many areas of the world are officially not human according to US policy.

The fact that an ignorant, childish cnut like Gohmert can hold an elected position speaks volumes for the ignorance of a large voting bloc in this country. He smacks so much of Steve King, just plays the racism game a bit better.

Just read he sponsored the Birther Bill. He was also a judge.
Scary as hell.

File under ‘Not The Onion’: Judge rules Devin Nunes cannot sue Twitter over fake internet cow...

Is this cnut going to be ousted this election cycle? In a way, I hope not because he offers sheer comedy, but vermin like him need to be removed at all costs.

A cynic might say the GOP would never sign off on adding two Senate seats that would likely be black Democrats and, if you replace ‘black‘ with Latino, you could say the same about Puerto Rico.

But I don’t know where they’d get that idea.

People from the left have a need to label people from their skin color I see, Washington DC is a city which belonged to Maryland, if they want to be part of a state then go back to Maryland.

Washington DC was created from land donated by Maryland and Virginia (although Virginia was given back its portion) to fulfill the Constitutional mandate to create a federally controlled zone for Government. I don't think the framers ever foresaw a city of almost 750K sitting in this zone. These people can not vote to "go back to Maryland" as DC is controlled interestingly by congress and not by the President. Congress could easily cede the entire city back to Maryland as they did in the 1800's with the Virginia portion. This is how it should be. A small strip of Government offices only.

Puerto Rico is a completely different situation.

This is a nice mock-up of how they’d frame it; straight out of the Stephen Miller playbook.

I was in Alabama when this travesty came into effect. There was only one talk radio station in Birmingham then and I forced myself to listen to it the entire time we lived there to remind myself of whee I was. The glee with which this ruling was met can not be understated. The racist assholes (aka republicans) in Alabama saw the VRA as a personal affront to their states rights. They could not wait to undo the VRA protections. From voter id, to reduction of polling places (shock! Only in black neighborhoods), to “cleansing” of the voter rolls. The level of false indignation with which they met the underlying reason FOR the VRA was only equaled by the sheer gall with which the enacted their disenfranchisement.

On Monday, the Supreme Court blocked Louisiana from enforcing a law restricting abortion in June Medical Services v. Russo.
The law, which would have required abortion providers to obtain admitting privileges from local hospitals, could have left only one doctor legally able to provide abortions in the entire state. It was very similar to the Whole Woman’s Health decision in 2016, which struck down a nearly identical Texas law.

The decision was 5-4, with Justice Stephen Breyer writing the opinion and Chief Justice John Roberts concurring in part. Roberts had previously dissented from the Texas case in 2016, but was conflicted at oral argument and ultimately decided to uphold precedent.

This marks the first time Roberts has ever sided with the liberal justices in an abortion case.

I think this may "confirm" that Roberts does give a crap (at least a little) about the legacy of his court.
