US Politics

Conyers just announced his retirement. Recommended his son take over his job. :wenger:

Another relative of his (Ian Conyers) is also planning on running for the seat

Nepotism on display here is not good and i hope a credible candidate comes forward and wins the seat.

Oops. Moore has retweeted someone "from Arizona" who had posted a screenshot of his donation to the Moore campaign.

The problem is that the time stamps dont match and it appears that the donation came from someone outside of the country.

Its been a shameful response from some on the left who believe this Franken story is a hit job and made up. Not much separates these people and those defending Moore.

True, although its generally not the best idea to place a one size fits all judgement on each of these cases, as they are inherently very different. At least imo, most people would view a 32 year old dating a 14 year old in a different category than Al Franken copping a feel with someone during tour. In his case, his accuser accepted his apology and made a public statement that he shouldn't be sacked. He should still go however, as the Dems will have little leverage in keeping the moral high ground if they still have a fellow Dem who is accused continuing to serve.

I wanted him out from day one, and I’m not the only one. What happened in the past 2 weeks was delaying the inevitable... and needlessly so.

Yeah Franken is done, with Conyers out and Roy Moore likely to be in Washington. I suspect the Dems will take the high ground even though they too have their own skeletons and try and draw as much blood from GOP as they can.

Agree that the cases are different and Moore's situation is much more serious. Just annoyed at the hypocrisy of these people.

I agree. These two resigning will give Democrats some leverage in this conversation, even if two weeks late.

Plus, it’s just the right thing to do.

I want there to be a form of due process for all accusations. If it's going to be a trial by media, it's essential that it's not just wild accusations by a partisan network or publication. You can't have a senator be forced to step down as soon as the accusations arise, stories need to be checked out and corroborated and there should be time for others to come forward (not that a single case proven true wouldn't be enough to warrant a resignation).

There's a danger in this current climate for people to take advantage of the new found empowerment of the voices of victims of abuse. The biggest danger with that is not the reputation of a few politicians, rather the diluting of the trust people have in the word of those who are brave enough to come forward.

I never understand how Republicans or even people aligned to the right take any sort of moral high ground. Anthony Weiner gets prison term and gets hounded out for being a pervert, but Roy Moore is elected.

Sure. In principle, accusations without proof are not enough. But, Franken didn’t deny these accusations. And, when you say “I believe the woman”, then you have to call for someone to step aside.

That said, there got to be a clear process about this, at least in Congress and other public institutions.

Interesting that a lot of "resistance" twitter accounts are angry at this decision.

I've suspected it for a long time, but its becoming more clear now that the Kremlin troll factory is behind a lot of these accounts to sow division on the Democrat side.

Many, many Democrats think its a GOP ratfeck and are furious about Franken going. It's not bots.

Agree that many real Democrats are not happy at this decision but its being amplified by these fake "resistance" Twitter accounts to give the impression that there's a huge split on the Democrat side on this issue.

I wouldn't bet hard on it. I'm watching longtime activists saying they're no longer going to donate or volunteer any more. They see it as the party shooting itself in the face one time too many.

There is a difference: people like these are the minority among Democrats. But people like these are the majority among Republicans.

This is just hilarious. A "member" of the "resistance" is claiming she along with her sister in law and mother in law are now switching from the Democrat party to supporting the GOP party

I bet lots of people with eagles in their profile pics and 2A, God and ProLife in their bio are supporting “her”

That account seems to have been around for quite a while and has tweeted about various things other than Al Franken.

In other words, welcome to genuine #theresistance twitter.

Edit: Support for Joy Reid, strong dislike of Bernie, undying love for Hillary, great #respect for bipartisanship and for Repubclians angrily saying "No, sir" while voting for the tax bill....yes, this is the #resistance alright.

Its just so laughable. The other user who is replying back to her is angry as well and she has now become an independent voter.

Account was created in October.

Its blatant mischief making by the Kremlin troll factory. They've infiltrated the "resistance" movement and are using these accounts to sow division in the Democrat base and to try to do some mischief making.

You think the Kremlin troll factory is interested in the fight that happened for Georgia mayor? Her retweets are the standard-bearers of this demographic - Sally Albright, Eric Garland (who yesterday proved Bernie was KGB or something), Jeff Flake, Jedd Legum, Joy Ann Reid, and a ton of the red scare (2017) stuff too.
Though there is one suspicious thing - so far it seems she only retweeted, this one looks like an actual persona tweet.

There are real people with these views, and they tend to be over-represented online.

You dont think this account is fake? She is claiming that she (along with her sister in law and mother in law) are going to leave the party and join the GOP.

As for the bit in bold, its been proven that the Russians were getting involved in a wide variety of issues last year which were seperate from the election itself, so its not suprising to me they are getting involved in the mayor election which has been contentious.
