US Politics

Puerto Rico needs to be brought on board officially, and DC needs to be made a state.

i lived through the whole DC statehood push in the early 90s. The Republicans would simply propose that DC residents be allowed to vote in VA or MD, rather than give the left two new Senators.

What's the point of a majority if he votes with the GOP on big issues?
Because if a Democrat wins in 2020 but the Senate is still finely balanced, Manchin is still a likelier vote for Democrats than even the most "moderate" of GOPers like Collins. And the Republican that takes over from Manchin in Trump-loving West Virginia would take that seat, hold it for multiple cycles and be as anti-Dem as someone could possibly be.

And a generic Democrat from West Virginia would be expected to vote with his or her party about 73 percent of the time during this Congress. That’s actually slightly less than the 77 percent of the time Manchin has voted with the Democratic Party in the average Congress.

By all means primary the guy, but he's literally just had one, against a progressive, and won it by 40 points. In a situation as shitty as the US Senate is for Dems, how picky can you be?

No, they are not. At most, 1 out of 49 Democrats are voting for him.

Calling Kavanaugh rapist without any proof? You realize that you worse than the Tea Party? He got accused for an event that happened 36 years ago, and as of now, there is absolutely no proof about it. I don't want him to be confirmed for other reasons (though then Trump might choose a more conservative pick), especially for his impartiality during the hearing, but you're not a rapist if you just get accused of rape, especially if the event has happened a lifetime ago.
It's not he said, she said though.

It's he said, *they* said.

Democrats held west virginia for decades. I dont think it's a lost cause. I think the message they've been running on the last few cycles is not appealing to voters.

Then try out the new one against Capito in 2020. Don't gift the GOP 6 years of locked-in votes in the meantime.

Or we can just let the Democrats continue to do what they always do.

"Vote blue, no matter who" while the current west Virginia governor was elected as a Democrat and then switched parties to the Republicans 6 months after he was inaugurated.

How about we have a DNC chair who says "we will primary any Democrat who votes for kavanaugh". That is not too much to ask. And the Democrats cant even do that. They cant even oppose a rapist 100%. (@Revan)

It would be cutting of a cancerous cell inside the body.

Not that this really matters. That craven piece of shit Tom Perez gave them all permission to do this.
I understand you a bit more now. Understood you before tbf, but disagreed on a few things, but how many times can you watch the Dems bend over and still take them seriously? It's a mess...

It would also be helpful if liberals moved to conservative states. Its sheer lunacy that Wyoming and its 500k population has the same Senate representation as California's 40m population. Places like ND, SD, WY, ID have remained conservative since they don't have any large urban centers, which has created a lopsided sense of representation in the Senate.

Better solution is to just remove the outdated lopsided rules from the 1700s that have no place in the 21st century.

How many votes would that require?

The demand should have done it in the Obama years when they had control.

Unless a critical mass population is reached in these conservative states about abortion and gay marriage, Republicans have it nailed down. They don't have to do shit about economy, health care, college or anything. It's remarkable that how policy wonks and nerds don't realize this.

I cant see that ever happening, to be honest. I have a political science degree and interned in the Michigan State House and my distaste for everyone there and everything about that environment turned me off of it entirely.

I get that, honestly I do, but what better way to change the system than by getting involved?

Well I am involved. Not as much as I should be but I've gone door to door, I'm a member of DSA, I donate time and money to things I believe in. I just dont think I could stomach actually being in politics myself.

Fair enough mate, I can understand the frustration.

Just pick a district and run. Make a list of your core policies, organize locally, create a small/private donation funding stream, and start campaigning.

Not much more difficult than if someone other than Kavanaugh was getting the job. Things like citizens united and the like weren’t going to get overturned in either case. The only difference would be if Kavanaugh finds himself involved in a decision involving Trump’s legal fate, where the guy who nominated him may be on the receiving end of a decision that benefits him. Other than that, a vast majority of the things Kavanaugh rules on will be in line with what any other Justice Trump may have nominated would rule on.

One difference between hardcore right wingers and the left is that if Kavanaugh is confirmed that a lot of the outrage over it will disappear and the repubs know it. The left likes to come to grips with things, or at least pretend it can move on, telling itself I am angry but what can I still do about it - it is what it is. It doesn't retain and focus the anger the way the right can. Credit to Trump for making it near impossible to focus on a single issue.

9 freaking people lol....did they have an intern come in on a saturday to bang those interviews out by noon? Ffs this administration.

Collins mentioning "dark money" on the left but nothing about the dark money and Federalist society influence on the right. She's going to vote for him. What a sham. Collins just another pawn of the rich elitists.

Yep....so far she's complimentary of Kav. Just needs to confirm her yes now.

The Dems will be better off winning the WH and getting Ginsburg and Breyer to retire. If by chance Trump gets another pick then that's when things could get ugly.

agree.

I also think that Trump would be wrong to think he has 5 rubber stamps for his crimes. Roberts certainly would not stop Mueller.

btw I believe Kavanaugh's confirmation will help the mid terms for the Dems.
