US Politics

The problem lies primarily with the sham report.

For the Senators who voted against Kavanaugh because of his decisions, it was easy. Dr. Ford's testimony was not needed.

For those that needed evidence he did what she claimed he did (corroboration) even if they agreed with his decisions they did not have to vote against him.

I'm so happy for the politically correct far left. "....but but... they are equally bad...Clinton is not PURE enough!! "
Keep blaming senator X and senator Y for your idiocy.

Groups will be lining up to bring cases before the Supreme Court.

Roberts will be the swing vote.

I doubt he would want to trash the Court's adherence to stare decisis, however I see the Court weakening provisions for Roe that allow states to tighten their restrictions on abortion, to the point that it is effectively banned, without saying, "Roe is overturned".

This is exactly what will happen.

Manchin may have saved his seat with his vote. In the scheme of things, that is more important than a No vote which would not have prevented the confirmation in any case.
The Dems need his seat if they are to have that slim chance of takeing the Senate.

Poor Brett Kavanaugh and his ruined life.

This level of control being exerted over the FBI is very interesting and obviously very concerning.

There’s a few things at play here I’d imagine.

Firstly, Sessions and Rosenstein are both Republicans so it’s very likely that they will have supported Kavanaugh’s appointment.

Secondly, they have no good will or leverage left with Trump and have their jobs on the line.

So it’s no surprise that Trump and his staff have been able to dictate this.

That leaves the next question open though - what else have they been dictating when it comes to what the FBI can and cannot focus on?

A lifelong appointment with his political outlook won't be undone by any kind of purported short term blue wave, even if we accepted that this shit would even lead to one.
He is actually less Conservative than Thomas and Gorsuch, I think, and he was hired from Elena Kagan to teach on Harvard, which shows that he is able to work together with people from the left. However, the court is going to the right, with Roberts becoming the new swing vote (and he is more Conservative than Kennedy was). Still, there is hardly a large difference between Kennedy, Roberts, Kavanaugh or even Alito.

The court was going in this direction since Trump won the election. People instead of complaining should vote in midferms in order to prevent another Conservative Scotus in case someone else retires/dies in the next 2 years.

That's precisely what will happen. It will still be 5-4 as its been for many years. Roberts is barely more conservative than Kennedy.

Manchin will lose the support of both democrats and republicans in his state. And not just from women, but due to his balatant lack of character.

Seriously the funniest thing I have read all week. Some to the replies from others who share a name with other politicians etc are priceless.

Or we can just let the Democrats continue to do what they always do.

"Vote blue, no matter who" while the current west Virginia governor was elected as a Democrat and then switched parties to the Republicans 6 months after he was inaugurated.

How about we have a DNC chair who says "we will primary any Democrat who votes for kavanaugh". That is not too much to ask. And the Democrats cant even do that. They cant even oppose a rapist 100%. (@Revan)

The reason WV isn't a Dem state is because their 3 biggest key demographics (50-65 age) are old, white, and distinctly homogenous, which makes it the perfect state for a Republican takeover. The type of old Dems that once resonated there were the likes of former Klan member Robert Byrd. There's no much in the way of progressivism there now, nor will there by until the current generation of baby boomers die off and are replaced by a few cycles of younger voters entering the rolls.

Those things were true when they had democrats holding both seats also. Bernie won the 2016 primary by 16 points. He's gotten huge crowds there on numerous occasions. I think there's potential there for a challenge from the left. Not the center though.

a few of my professors back when I was studying Con Law felt Roberts was shifting to the center anyway.

Yep. Roberts has been trending liberal since he got the job and is now more or less in line with where Kennedy is as he's on his way out.

Identity politics there Raoul ;)

Didn't Bernie crush Hillary in the primary there? (Might be misremembering.) that suggests to me that a populist left candidate running in WV would garner more support than a corporate centrist. Sure they might not win the moderates but that primary suggests to me it could galvanise people who don't often vote-I think you've said in this thread that's a market to tap into. Don't forget too Trump used a lot of leftist stances (as lies) when he went to places like that, especially economically, talking about ending NAFTA. That part of the Venn diagram intersects with the populist left view, only they mean it.

If you're on the left and running there, you push it as a workers and jobs agenda surely.
