He will be doomed in the Democratic party.

He's in a pretty strong position either way. His number one objective is reelection and he sees this as more helpful than detrimental towards achieving that goal. If the Dems don't like it then he will simply feck off and become a Republican, which would in the long run be more problematic than helpful for the Dems. So they will likely play his game and hope for the best.

That said, how Collins votes may also affect how Manchin votes since her vote is buying him top cover to do as he wants.

What I actually find is that when people care about facts and what is true, this tends to offend people who are biased towards one side or the other.

Technically true, but not really true. Anthony Kennedy is certainly no liberal, but he broke with the other conservative justices on a few very important cases. This will be the first reliable 5-4 conservative majority in decades.
