The Republicans have done the Democrats a favour by confirming this rapist.
A lifelong appointment with his political outlook won't be undone by any kind of purported short term blue wave, even if we accepted that this shit would even lead to one.
People argued with me this whole investigation thing couldn't possibly work in the Republicans favor. I thought they were again setting the stage to one up the Dems by "allowing it" to proceed. And fecking look at it. They have. I have zero confidence the Dems can use this to their long term benefit.
Also don't forget that Trump's and the Rs speaking about Ford with respect was done in mostly press conferences etc that are seen and heard by most people. Trump s attacks came at a rally with like minded people. Between the investigation and some of the "respectful" tone the Rs used re Ford some will think they were being extremely fair and thorough in this. Them saying it is shameful what the Dems did to Ford looks even better for them now because it looks like it wasn't worth ruining her life for it and they re probably right.
Collins is even swinging the #MeToo movement into a supposed Republican supported platform in her speech right now. Most people don't pay attention to things much beyond that - most people aren't as invested as those of us arguing online or protesting out on the streets. Once again score one for the Repubs. The Dems tried to play the dirty game like the Rs did for so many years and got beaten with experience.

I must say the GOP has excelled in this process. They have thwarted the Democrats at every step and even when they lost...they ending up winning. They have both been manipulatively brilliant and used their authority to guide the process in a guise of fairness while being anything but.
It will be interesting to see how the Democratic Party will operate when they are majority. The GOP has set a very unsettling precedent. Will the Dems be as unprincipled and ruthless? Will acting like the GOP make them as bad as the GOP?

Ultimately, the GOP control each branch of government it was always going to be difficult to derail one of the SCOTUS nominations.
