US Politics

Roberts might end up going to the left a bit more. I'm very curious to know what the other justices think of BK after his performance.

This whole episode has weakened the entire institution, which I suspect was the ultimate aim anyway.

Technically true, but not really true. Anthony Kennedy is certainly no liberal, but he broke with the other conservative justices on a few very important cases. This will be the first reliable 5-4 conservative majority in decades.

Roberts is just about where Kennedy was throughout most of his time as SCOTUS so he could wind up the more moderating voice in the next court.

If Manchin votes with the GOP, the Dems should make sure he loses his seat. Even if it costs them the Senate.

The Senate is far more important than Manchin's Kavanaugh vote. Ultimately, this is a Republican President who is going to select a conservative justice. Elections have consequences etc.

So if Trump gets his man, how much harder does it make it to deal with him? Wrt Russia, taxes, emoluments etc...

That would be dictionary definition cutting your nose off to spite your face.

Sure, but it would be very not enthusiastic for Democrats to vote for him if he votes yes tomorrow. Trump has been doing rallies for Morrisey, and Manchin is still leading on double digits, so I don't buy this 'he has to appeal to Trump voters' arguments. If those people listen to Trump, they would vote for Morrisey instead. However him chickening out in the (in my opinion totally wrong) most important issue for these midterms, will likely make a lot of liberals stay at home during the election day.

What's the point of a majority if he votes with the GOP on big issues?

Its a numbers game. If you have 51 Senators then you control the Senate, procedures, committees, etc. You basically set the agenda which the opposition is obliged to follow.

Flake to vote yes, while wearing a face of inner torment and anguish.
Yep. I think that Munchin will vote same as Collins, so I guess it all depends on Collins. She has controversially voted in the past against party lines, and her votes are typically aligned with those of Murkowski.

People often forget that SCOTUS seats is one of the only things that tends to galvanize all factions of the right from Trump hating Rinos to MAGA fans to far right wingers. They see this as a cultural war and understand (rightly so) that stacking the courts with favorable judges will preserve the legal and regulatory framework for them to retain as much power as possible.

I think Collins will announce her vote in a couple of hours.

I don't know what's more surprising, the fact people thought this genuinely was going to end any differently? Or the fact people are so upset and shocked about it?

Damn, people are dumb. We need to all stop acting so fecking dumb and butthurt about the wrong things and start working together and fighting for the right things.

Protesting Senators is stupid and just playing in to the ReTrumpicans hands. It's especially pointless if everyone just bitches about it and doesn't turn out to vote.

I get that. I'm just laughing at Flake's attempt to make it into the next "Profiles of Courage" book while really doing the square root of feck all

Voting is ineffective because the only options are corporate pro war parties. Mass action is the only option.

Yeah, if you can’t vote for your perfect world, you might as well note vote at all because there’s not enough difference between a fascist kleptocracy and a moderately conservative democracy to bother.

Democrats are voting for a rapist on the supreme court. The head of the dnc told them it's okay to do so. Democrats are kleptocracy too.

You really think after all we've seen these past few years that Democrats will save us? You are more optimistic than me

Mass action .You mean like a civil war i keep hearing about.

I mean general strikes, civil disobedience, protests, making it impossible for Republican politicians to walk down the street or eat a meal without being spit on or told how hated they are.

The almost entirely democratic Washington DC civil council just overturned a referendum passed by the voters this summer to raise the tipped minimum wage.

Democrats dont care about workers! They dont care about normal people! They are complicit in the atrocities visited on the people of this country and people around the world.

They will not save us.

I think if he is confirmed it will be better for the Democrats In the mid terms than if he is rejected and no one else is till then.

Quite a complex situation this.

No, they are not. At most, 1 out of 49 Democrats are voting for him.

Calling Kavanaugh rapist without any proof? You realize that you worse than the Tea Party? He got accused for an event that happened 36 years ago, and as of now, there is absolutely no proof about it. I don't want him to be confirmed for other reasons (though then Trump might choose a more conservative pick), especially for his impartiality during the hearing, but you're not a rapist if you just get accused of rape, especially if the event has happened a lifetime ago.

It would also be helpful if liberals moved to conservative states. Its sheer lunacy that Wyoming and its 500k population has the same Senate representation as California's 40m population. Places like ND, SD, WY, ID have remained conservative since they don't have any large urban centers, which has created a lopsided sense of representation in the Senate.

I recently watched Michael Moore's new movie and he made a similar point that the Democrats are as much a part of the problem as Trump's Republicans are.

They're just as corrupt, just as uncaring, just as easy to get past with a financial incentive.

100 million people in the US don't like either party and didn't bother to vote in the last election.

Indeed. If one of the congress rooms needed to have equal power for each state (and well, there is an argument on it), then it should have been the less powerful house, instead of the more powerful senate.

Puerto Rico needs to be brought on board officially, and DC needs to be made a state.
