House declares U.S. military role in Yemen's civil war unauthorized

The nonbinding resolution adopted 366-30, does not call for a halt to the American support but publicly acknowledges the Pentagon has been sharing targeting information and refueling warplanes that Saudi Arabia and other allies are using to attack Houthi rebels in a conflict that is widely considered a proxy war with Iran — and a humanitarian disaster.

It states, in part, that U.S. military operations are authorized to fight only Al Qaeda and other allied terrorist groups in Yemen, not Shiite Muslim rebels.

The AUMF was a historic catastrophe and Barbara Lee deserves a statue.

And how about PhD students?

Bottom line: they get royally fecked under the current GOP proposal.

As someone who relied on the current system to get my graduate degree, I think that this new proposal is shocking. It won't make much of a difference for the budget balance, but it's terrible for graduate education.

I guess that Republicans think that this policy will disincentivize some future talents to move to the U.S. (many PhD programs rely on on foreign students).

I suspect Drumpf will dump Moore once he comes back.
That's what I said yesterday. It's the best thing for Trump. If he does, each time people mention the Access Hollywood tape or Trump accusers, his defenders will say "the president showed that he has no tolerance towards sexual misconduct and acted swiftly upon his return..." You will hear this over and over and over again!

I suspect Bannon's probably believed the allegations all along and will now merely rescind his support that the GOP are backing out. Moore won't have a leg to stand on and even an anti-establishment Republican like Bannon will know backing him has no benefits.

It will be interesting to see if Bannon loses credibility in all of this since Moore was his project.

I don't think so. He will be given the benefit of the doubt. Maybe one more failure will do, but I can't see this happening now.

Well he is basically hand picking candidates to run in the mid terms, in some cases against Trump's own preferences, so maybe this will derail things a bit.

Maybe. But, man, you should expect anything from this party.

There is no love lost between Trump and Moore. Trump won't find it hard to disavow Moore. Not sure if it changes much on the ground in Alabama... And either way, the GOP are fecked on this.

U.S. Hires Company With K.G.B. Link to Guard Moscow Embassy
https://www.nytimes.com/2017/11/14/world/europe/embassy-moscow-kgb.html
Washington has hired a private Russian company that grew out of a security business co-founded by Mr. Putin’s former K.G.B. boss, an 82-year-old veteran spy who spent 25 years planting agents in Western security services and hunting down their operatives.

Under a $2.8 million no-bid contract awarded by the Office of Acquisitions in Washington, security guards at the American Embassy in Moscow and at consulates in St. Petersburg, Yekaterinburg and Vladivostok will be provided by Elite Security Holdings, a company closely linked to the former top K.G.B. figure, Viktor G. Budanov, a retired general who rose through the ranks to become head of Soviet counterintelligence.

A State Department official in Washington, speaking on condition of anonymity in accordance with the department’s rules, said that Elite Security and individuals associated with it had been “vetted” with “relevant national and local agencies” and would not increase the threat risk.

Fox guarding the coop?

What happens If sessions gets written in and wins? Will he have to resign as AG? That would actually be really helpful for Trump. He will get to appoint a new AG without any backlash, that will do his bidding and probably fire Mueller and then the Alabama Senate seat will be safe in the Republican hands

Yes.

He still won't be able to fire Mueller without a shitstorm. And if Moore refuses to resign from the race, putting Sessions in the ballot splits the Republican vote, giving the seat to Doug Jones. So it's not that simple.

Wow, just seen the clips of Moore on a radio show (Colbert played them) where he was asked about dating young girls and said he doesn't remember dating any girls without the permission of their mother :wenger:

The interview with Hannity was really telling. He said it would be out of his normal behavior. Guilty as sin.

Yeah, even with the caveat that those times were different, and, probably, in Moore's mind all the women he dated were legally able to consent, you're supposed to go full Sherman on questions like that. Not doing so shot down his credibility in the court of public opinion (outside of Alabama, mind).

Very interesting

JD Vance (CNN) was saying that per say Sessions resigns as AG to the enter the Alabama race it could have a negative effect in the state. His view is that these voters in Alabama are firmly entrenched behind Moore and that Sessions entering would be viewed as Washington once again sticking their nose in states business. So he surmised it could cause problems. Make of that what you will.

They also touched on the religious aspect of Moore's support and how they all feel it's a national media witch hunt and that until the local press really ups the pressure nothing will change.

Is that Nikki Haley near the person holding up the enlarged chart? Whether her or not you can see the mild amusement in her trying not to beak out into laughter. Probably thinking this Gohmert is a nob.

Gohmert is arguably the most ignorant politician in the country.

 he actually put Benghazi on there and it isn't satire.

Aye. Keep in mind that from the beginning, the national GOP along with Trump was backing Strange for the seat, not Moore. As a result, all this talk of the national party withdrawing support means feck all.

I released 2,000 minks from a fur farm. Now I'm a convicted terrorist
Kevin Johnson
The FBI says animal rights activists are America’s greatest domestic terrorism threat. This endangers activists – but makes big pharma and agriculture happy

https://www.theguardian.com/comment...eased-2000-minks-fur-farm-convicted-terrorist

Last Wednesday, the court upheld the constitutionality of the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act, the federal statute that put me away for three years and that my lawyers at the Center for Constitutional Rights have been trying to challenge for nearly a decade.

The Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act is a piece of designer legislation written and paid for by the agriculture and pharmaceutical industries. It federalizes non-violent property crime and punishes it as terrorism – but only when the perpetrators are motivated by the belief that animals deserve to live free from violence.

The court explicitly stated that the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act did not apply to four Fresno, California, teenagers who sneaked into a Foster Farms facility and bludgeoned 900 chickens to death with a golf club because “they killed the chickens for no reason”.

Put succinctly, I am a terrorist not because of what I did, but because the government dislikes why I did it.

Lindsey Graham is Ricky Gervais in 15 years.

Also, this would be the biggest lead for Jones yet by a way
