Doesn't sound like something the times would do.
Heh. Wouldn't be the first time they messed up or acted irresponsibly.

Never seen a nomination be rushed through so quickly. Its obvious that they are expecting more women to come forward in the coming weeks and they are trying to get the nomination confirmed before more damaging stories come to light.
A woman who has accused US President Donald Trump's Supreme Court nominee, Brett Kavanaugh, of sexual assault will present senators with sworn declarations from four people to corroborate her allegations, according to copies of the statements released by her lawyers.
The declarations, first reported by USA Today, include signed documents from Christine Blasey Ford's husband and three friends that her lawyers sent to the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Seems dangerous. Even though they are currently favoured to win the senate, pushing Kavanaugh through only for there to be new, credible allegations about him could increase the chances they lose the senate. And if the allegations are serious enough and credible enough it's even conceivable that Kavanaugh would have to be impeached himself. It's very unlikely, obviously, but why risk it when they already have a list of genuine, vetted candidates.
Kavanuagh was also vetted extensively by the FBI over the years, so there's no guarantee that future nominees wouldn't run into problems. The GOP know that the Dem strategy here is to delay as long as possible, improbably win back the Senate, then prevent Trump from putting the 5th conservative SCOTUS judge on the bench in retaliation for Garland. Its all a game of political brinksmanship.
You think the Dems will win back the senate? I think there is a very little chance of it happening. I still believe that all these "too close to call" races are going to go the Republicans way. With Trump, and the GOP in it's current state, people, imo, simply lie to the pollsters. Also, democratic voters are notoriously bad at coming out to vote. The house too will be touch and go, imo.
I think that impeaching him requires a supermajority, which is unlikely to happen unless GOP finds some decency.Seems dangerous. simple majority in the house for impeachment, 2/3 in the senate for a convictionI think that impeaching him requires a supermajority, which is unlikely to happen unless GOP finds some decency.
Its definitely low percentage that they win back the Senate but even if they don't the alternative strategy is to use the Kavanaugh drama to gin anger and enthusiasm among their base in the lead up to the mid terms. So ultimately it will be a win/win strategy for them - get Kavanaugh disqualified and in the process take back the Senate and squash all future nominations during Trump's final two years; and if they don't take back the Senate they will still have picked up a few more seats in congress by way of heavy Dem turnout in November.
Till now I have seen nothing to suggest that they'll be able to stall the nomination till the mid-terms. Jeff Flake is our best hope, and we all know how the republicans are when it comes to voting for their agenda. Any animosity towards Trump or this, even if proven right, is not going to stop them from taking this to vote. Kavanugh will be the 9th judge.
Even if they by some miracle they can stall it, don't you think it'll be the republicans who'll come to vote in numbers seeing the great injustice that has been done to the "good soccer dad"?
I don't understand how the repub senators can get away with hiding behind an attorney who will question her for them. She should refuse to answer any questions put to her by anybody but a senator.
It could also spectacularly backfire for the Repubs if the Ford, the alleged victim, is made to look like she is the one on trial, while Kavanaugh, the accused, is peppered with softball questions by someone who is an advocate for the Republican position.
You're assuming the GOP voters give a feck.

Its the Dem voters who would be animated by all of this. If they can simply turn out 1-2% more in November then that could result in a significant difference in the next congress.
We're not talking about a Presidential election here. Voter turnout is always significantly lower in mid-term elections. GOP voters aren't going to be more likely to vote in the mid-terms because of it, but Democrat voters might be. It's a bad idea to do something that riles up the opposition base without really doing anything to your own, particularly in mid-terms.
