United under LvG: verdict so far!

I checked some old threads on here, and surprise, surprise he wasn't even a name on the poll.

He was supposed to retire before he coached the Netherlands but his ambition always was to coach them once more so he took the job. He was then going to retire after the WC but Manchester United called, so it's not strange many didn't think of him as an option.

Unless he somehow flukes us to 4th place, he should be sacked.

And it will be good riddance if I may say so.

He was the Dutch manager at the time trying to qualify for the World Cup, he obviously wasn't available. The reality is we cocked it up the first time, the ego's at the club decided we were somehow unique (despite Ferguson being much Mourinho than Moyes when he took over) and that getting a Jock was more important than getting the best man, even if David Moyes' reputation as some buffoon is absurd. Moyes's position was untenable, I think we would've gone for Klopp, Ancelotti and apparently Conte ahead of Van Gaal but we couldn't get them.

I'm not sure changing managers again will help, it's just more upheaval, but there's no other reason really to want Van Gaal to stay. Some on here, who I think are just deluded, maintain there's clearly a philosophy but I'm not sure what it is given half our squad aren't up to it despite massive expenditure while we changing tactics and the team every week. There's no way of creating continuity, ignoring the bizarre substitutions. The only things that have been consistent, certainly recently, are how slow we are in possession and that Fellaini has moved further forward again. We look more outdated than the England ODI team. His strength was supposedly that he leaves teams in much better shape than he takes them over but it looks like he's desperately scrambling to find something that gets results for now rather than making something that will be good in the long term.

THe only reason Valencia plays (terribly) at right back in the first place is because of Van Gaal taking a completely irrational disliking to the only right sided fullback in his squad.

So no, he doesn't get off that one, even if you do conveniently ignore his usual array of dumb substitutions and ignorance of the areas of the pitch in which we struggle or where one of our players is performing poorly.

Add to that, the player who scored the winning goal is a player who Van Gaal chose to dispose of in order to bring in a player who spent the entire game tonight sat on the bench because Van Gaal was more concerned with pissing around pointlessly with who was playing at left back.

More or less every game is a very obvious 90 minute display of why he's an idiot...yet it's only now and when we drop to fifth that people who blindly defend it will suddenly change their tune.

I said to my brother before the game, he'd have to take Bllind off for Carrick, and Fellaini and Valencia would stay on despite the fact it'd be obvious they should come off. Was right with 2 out of 3, and the only reason it wasn't a full house is because Van Gaal wouldn't sub off his pet so subbed off the guy next to him instead. This happens every fecking week. You can sit there before the game and correctly predict where the mistakes are in the team/tactics/etc...that's as clear a sign as you'll ever get that your manager is a moron...because you can guarantee opposition teams watch and notice the same things.

Best post iv read in months to be honest.

So what exactly are you trying to say with as many failures as successes?

That being proven doesn't mean anything. We should judge him based on what we have seen so far this season, not based on reading pages filled with philosophical nonsense or his past, which actually contains as many failures as successes.

Would we realistically have gotten Fabregas, Kroos and Cavani? (pls say no :( )

I've always maintained that I was really looking forward to last summer's window under Moyes. He didn't rate most of our squad, and he was openly scouting lots of top players and reports of deals with the likes of Kroos seemed well down the line.

For him to say Valencia was his best player just takes the biscuit. Then the stupid press say nothing about the substitutions. Idiots.

The fact is LVG is a coward and that's not something we want or need at Manchester United.

He won the double didn't he?

Yep. He won the double with Chelsea. They scored over 100 goals that season. Classy guy, great record, plays attacking football, plays players in their best positions, proven in the PL, not ancient. He'd be ideal.

I reckon we will, the board and club members seem to trust him, and it looked like he has built a plan, I understand its frustrating and wanted him away a month ago, but imo we've really shown improvement lately.

I don't think he has a plan, rather i don't think his plan will be executed as well as he would like

One second, let me pass this information to my good pal Ed Woodward

I am absolutely furious and fuming now... But no matter what happens this season, I dont think sacking him is the right option.

There is no quick fix and LVG may not be the right person to fix this. But the last thing we need is a new manager coming in the summer and taking more time to evaluate the players and waste one more season.

Continuity is going to be the key. So, Even if we get relegated this season, I would stick with LVG.

The only way you can really say he's improved on what Moyes did is via our league position. Because I don't think the performances have been better.

And there's a chance that our current league position is simply down to the way the fixture list has been organised this season as compared to last.

Because on an equivalent game basis, LvG is actually worse off points wise than Moyes was.

I still have a bit of faith in the guy, as it happens, and in the quality of our squad. We need results over the next 6-8 weeks, and I think we are more than capable of getting them - even if we do still have to play Chelsea (A), City (H), Tottenham (H), Liverpool (A), Arsenal (H) and Everton (A) as 6 of our last 11 games.

But by God, I don't think the man has been anything to write home about at all.

(And for those of you reading this as basically an implicit, bitterness tinged pro-Moyes rant - you are quite correct)

Most top managers don't need months and months to evaluate players. It's a poor excuse imo.

Not good enough. United are on a downward spiral, and Van Gaal is accelerating the drop with his decisions. The glory days do not look like returning under Van Gaal. His tactical blunders have cost us many a game this season, tonight was just the latest failure. Marks, so far, out of 10? 3. Poor.

There really is no difference between this and last season

Last season we had some decent performances.

I see a trend though.

Start of the season - slow, not good enough. With van Gaal he took time to get used to the pace of the PL. Moyes had far tougher games to begin with, and we were sluggish. Though he had that excuse (hard fixtures, CL games, getting to grips with his new team).

October - January - good run of form. Believe both had a long run of wins. Moyes lost crucial home games though, Van Gaal drew games we should have won. Settled team.

January onwards - was a farce with Moyes. Getting worse with LvG as he looks like he's back to square 1 as he doesn't know his best formula.

Well i'm sorry, but that'd be moronic.

Anyway, LvG wasn't good tonight. His subs were strange as I thought we had the better of the first half. Seemed to drop the tempo in the 2nd. He can't really be at fault for individual errors but we lacked creativity going forward - again. Still top four or out for me.

Expect to see 3-5-2 against Spurs

The most worrying aspect for me, apart from the obvious poor team displays with any real consistency, is that most of our players look afraid. I think LVG has instilled this into them with all the talk about this complex 'philosophy'. Now, instead of playing through instinct, they are constantly wondering what LVG would want them to do. It has slowed our play down and turned our attacking ethos into one of stagnation and uncertainty.

With all due respect, we can say that all of that improvement has been annihilated today. This loss will hurt a lot and for a long time, I feel.

Apart for the stupid Valencia mistake we looked pretty solid, the majority of their chances came after the sending off. The biggest concern for me is that we play pointless possession football, we have so much of the ball but create very little. This is down to our passing speed and movement, the team confidence is so low we don't even try quick passing/first time passing or one-twos.
