Amazed to discover Van Gaal actually was a player. Thought he was a prison psychologist or controversial lollipop man.

We finished 15 points away from 4th place last season. We're currently 5 points away from 2nd and we have 10 games to play with a lot them against teams around us. Good times again ;)

Good to see another person who sees that as an opportunity.

This team was broken for a long time. This was not going to be an easy fix and will be a couple of years before we are anywhere were we should be. For me, the barometer isn't the league, it's the CL. Yep we need to get in it first but if we build a team capable of winning it, we will walk the league....

I can understand the longevity argument having seen the evidence with Sir Matt, and Sir Alex to an extent. These two were exceptional people and exception to the rule. As fans, and those running the club behind the scenes could see progress being made during those initial periods of rebuilding job.

Patience with under-achieving manager has probably gone for good. Football landscape has changed with massive financial restraints. If we carry on making mistakes in the transfer market without success on the field United's business model suffers which could possibly end up with the club being in irreparable position for years.

I reckon Sir Alex only survived the initial period of management due to the club not having similar financial implications during those times.

Can you really not see the progress we are making? We dominate games now, all we need to add is a lethal finishing touch.

We dominate possession, most of which is utterly pointless and we give away about as many chances to the opposition as we create ourselves (Case in point the Newcastle game). How is that progress? We've gone backwards over the last 2 months if anything.

The biggest progress I've witnessed on the pitch is us getting harder to beat this season. That's not great after spending near 250 Million on players over the last three transfer windows.

Yep, I can't see it too.

We dominate games, but very rarely look like the team on the front foot. For a team that is geared toward possession based football we still give the ball away an awful lot, even when we're not being pressed, and our star players are looking devoid of ideas. We've progressed from last season and do hold the ball better but is that because of the work LVG has done or is it more to do with the fact that our midfield is no longer made up of a player who is struggling in a relegation team and another who is immobile and struggles under possession?

We haven't gone backwards, we are a lot more comfortable with the ball, the remaining problems are being better without the ball and being more efficient in front of the goal.

Thank you. Atleast some people remember our players lacking the ability to control a football last season. I never worry about loose touches this season just the occasional clumpsy pass, in Di Maria's case very often.

Case in point the Newcastle game? I'd say your use of that example is case in point that people can't see what's right in front of their eyes.

We had far more clear cut chances than them which included a perfectly good goal ruled offside. the general consensus of that match was that not only did we dominate them but we should have won it by about 3 goals.

220m to replaces 10 first team squad players that departed. In the last window alone Liverpool spend £120m to replace two players and Arsenal spent £95m strengthening without losing a single player.

I'll repeat that, we lost 10 players and bought 6. Did you expect us to be some sort of cohesive, vibrant attacking title challenger by now?

We really don't give the ball away that much as shown by our regular 60% possession and the fact we've conceded 11 in 22 games. It's all in fans head when they say we are playing badly and gifting opportunities. It's just not happening like that any more.

People aren't enjoying our football, that's all it comes down to. So they say we are playing badly. Playing boring football and playing badly isn't the same thing.

We're comfortable keeping the ball in and around the half way line until one of our players inevitably gives it away leading to a counter and a world class save from De Gea. We looked a hell of a lot better in our games prior to Christmas. So, yes, we have gone backwards.

Absolute guff. You need to actually start watching us more and see what's actually happening rather than what you imagine happens. What you talk about there has probably happened about 4 times in the last 10 game at the most.

Our football is much better than before Christmas and is much less pragmatic now. Playing with Herrera, Blind and two wingers has been far more expansive.

We bring the ball around the opposing box very easily, too. But for some reason our players don't try to shoot unless, it's the last resort. And the action that you are describing happens "only" every 4 or 5 games, most of the time De Gea has nothing to do. And before Christmas we were dull.

Of the top of my head Newcastle had:

1. Blatant penalty ignored by the referee.
2. Riviere 1v1 with the keeper and missing in the 1st half.
3. Riviere 1v1 with the keeper and scuffing his shot in the 2nd half.
4. Cisse 1v1 with De Gea and mishitting it.
5. Cisse with another chance right after we scored.

In comparison we had:

1. Rooney 1v1 with the keeper and missed.
2. Rooney goal wrongly disallowed.
3. Fellaini chance in the first half
4. Fellaini/Young chance in the 2nd half.
5. Our goal

Round about the same number of chances.

Won it by 3 goals? Complete nonsense.

For us there is also Di Maria in the first minute.

You should take your own advise and watch us play a lot more.

All our best football came pre-Christmas (Hull, Newcastle, 1st half vs Spurs). We've been horrendous to watch post christmas.

...under 2 different managers with contrasting playing styles. Give it some time.

I don't mean to be pedantic but the Newcastle and Spurs game were after Christmas.

So it was!

We looked decent enough until the Spurs game and I was reasonably confident we would get top 3. We've been terrible since then imo.

Some of our posters have become eternal optimists.

Time is something we really don't have in football. I don't mean as fans.

Ashley Young hitting it straight at the keeper when Rooney was free. Di Maria losing his barrings in the first half.

Is the penalty incident a chance? He didn't shoot at goal.

We say 3-0 our chances came at more crucial moments. We should have been 2-0 up before the Riviere chance.

Well, the owners seem content with things, so we have no choice but be patient. Sure, our football since the turn off the year has been dull. But it's not like the manager has been oblivious to that. There would be reason for concern if we were in the same situation as last season. We're clearly better off now, even if the expectations of some fans aren't being met.

I counted the Young chance.

He didn't shoot but then neither did Di Maria in the first minute yet that's apparently a chance. Also Krul stopped playing for the offside so no guarantees Rooney would have scored.

who were the ten that went - i got the 3 older ones from the back 4 plus 3 younger ones TC 23 , danny danny danny and chich. who i'm i missing?

We are crap to watch this season. It's difficult to drag myself out of bed at 4am to watch midweek games now.

Kagawa, Fabio, Fletcher, Zaha, Nani. Probably a few more of the fringe ones as well.

Judging our displays on one game is not the point. We have been consistently unconvincing over the course of the season despite having an array of special players at his disposal.

the bolded ones didn't play/or barely did nor did giggs as asst mgr. - the fringe was deffo nani and kags and fridge (aka anderson) was loaned out. they'd have to go anyway. thank fuc4 he got rid of them. one of the things i give him kudos for. DFM should have but he was a pus5y and took a year away from the process. he needs the get the sword out again for another chop of about 6 players again. i wonder if some of those players would still be here under fergie?

Nani, Kagawa and Buttner. It doesn't matter so much about the quality, it's just that what was a settled 20 odd man squad that was well drilled by Ferguson is no longer. Players had aged or got worse and for whatever reason needed to move on or be moved on. We were left with a skeleton squad that had new players added to it that will take time to adapt and don't have the luxury of the Ferguson days of being slowly incorporated into a settled side and system.

The impatience of a lot of people comes down to the realisation that they might not enjoy Van Gaal's brand of football rather than their belief that we are actually playing badly or not progressing. That's why they refuse to give him time.

That's really it, even though it will be denied by people.

Judging our displays on one game is not the point. We have been consistently unconvincing over the course of the season despite having an array of special players at his disposal.

And yet displays where we have been convincing have not be aknowledged as such because it didn't excite or blow the opposition away and people would prefer to criticise and say "well they could have scored against us and if they had actually created and scored more then we wouldn't have won".

summer will be a tipping point. another 4-5 players in and loads of hangers on departing. he has names of players he wants and those who will be gone. at least he has a plan.
