United under LvG: verdict so far!

Whether we finish in the top 4 or don't he should go. This football he has our team playing is utter trash and only god knows how we're gathering these points.

Why should falcao not be on the bench he has been terrible week in week out, fellaini wasn't great but he was better than falcao has been for a long time.
Because he helped turn the previous game? Because he's a striker and we needed a goal? I'm not saying he would have made the difference, mind you, I'm just frustrated by LVG's decisions. Seems like he's going out of his way to keep people baffled.

Must have been about the substitutions (Fellaini off, Falcao not on - quite controversial when we're chasing a game) between Giggs & LVG.

I honestly think i'm in the minority here but i think our game is actually improving, sure theres been games where we've been absolutely abject but it takes time to change a teams style of play which had been pretty static the last 3 seasons

I think too many people are falling for the "boring United" narrative. Yes, we took it slow in our build up and were not going 100 miles an hour. But we did manage to create a number of chances and had Fellaini or Rooney taken their chances, we'd had had the lead sooner.

Too many people fall into the narrative. This is also the reason why the commentator in the river I watched comment on Van Gaal not leaving his chair the entire game, when he actually did in the first half.

Subbing Angel just as he was coming to life with three chances created in about five minutes has to go down as one of his more irrational decisions this season. Almost cost us the game. Still, faith remains strong.

Obviously over the moon with the win but it did mask yet another gutless display. Watching us pass sideways that much is absolute torture of high proportions, it really is. Questions remain over his man management and substitutions yet again, taking off Di Maria when he started getting into the game and CARRICK when we need a goal in the last 5 minutes over Falcao is just absolute ridiculous, even if Falcao is out of form.

This coming schedule is going to seal his fate one way or another in my eyes.

Good away performance. Totally dominated Newcastle.

Weird non-reaction from Giggs for the goal when LvG was cheering in his face...

So is there something to Giggs' reaction to Van Gaal? It worried me a bit.

Perhaps Giggs has been getting his hopes up about taking over again...?

Weird that he didn't celebrate though, it was an absolutely crucial goal and he reacted like he was gutted!

Agree with that but before that, we played well. We played quick football, with urgency, pressure and even created chances. It's an improvement

He was still pissed that Fellaini was subbed off

Believe in the philosophy. He brings in, probably for the players, a completely new way of thinking and he needs time to build his own team. If this is still the situation in september, then it is a different matter.

Any chance of a gif of the Van Gaal/Giggs thing? Couldn't really tell much on the single viewing. Looked a bit strange though, it was as if Giggs couldn't give a shit and Van Gaal was kind of in his face.

As for the LVG verdict, he still has the players on side at least. Obviously we all are hoping for much needed improvement. Needs to get top 4, if he manages it then I'm happy to give him more time. That race is honestly getting nervy now though.

fecking hate the guy. What's going on with him and Giggs? Got in his face yet again when we scored. Does he not realise this isn't his doing, getting 3 points? It's pure luck. Yet again.
Sort of like it was pure luck every other time won by a late goal, right? Bloody 'ell, mate. If it's a goal for your side, you celebrate. ESPECIALLY if it's a very late winner. Then you celebrate harder. Don't care if it's LVG, SAF, Moyes, hell, it could be anyone, you celebrate regardless because you love your team.

He did celebrate at first at least, looked like he wanted to avoid LVG's eye contact.

I think there is plenty of things LVG could improve but dropping falcao and not bringing him on as a sub isnt one of them, if anything he has persisted with him too long. I get the frustration though, it's painful to watch at times, the lack of tempo and pace in our play is a real problem.

I know we won, but I still don't see him turning us into the aggressive that we should be, he managed to transform our players in possession we are a lot better with the ball, we can control the game, we can easily bring the ball in the last 30 but we lack the aggressiveness.
I think that he almost finished his job with us.

He doesn't seem much better than Moyes in terms of decision making and showing any promise that that will change.

But he does have the respect of the players and the position in the table.

I haven't lost hope yet, but he needs to get his arse in gear.

Every week I keep hoping to see some changes in the positive direction but I don't see it. Slow ponderous attacking football combined with leaky defensive football. Can't complain if we get top 4 I suppose but I hoped for better.

I honestly wouldn't trust Giggs as far as I could throw him, as much as I respected and loved him as a player. If I was Van Gaal I wouldn't of had him on the main staff knowing he has made it blatantly obvious he wants to be the manager himself.

Even Moyes football wasn't this bad. I hate watching us play. Top 4 or not this guy needs to go in the summer. Feck him and his bollockless philosophy.

Was a slight improvement today if it wasn't for Krul and if we buried our chances we would have won comfortably, still don't understand his subs. Step in the right direction.

Poor stuff from us this season yet we have rescued a few points with late goals which didn't happen last season... if we want to have any chance of finishing in the top four this season we do need to do better though and strive to get goals earlier rather than waking up after the opposition have scored. Huge games coming up, will be interesting to see what happens.

Louis van Gaal cheering "You're not getting my job just yet you trouble maker!!", the reaction with the players was very good it looked that is to say Louis van Gaal and the players at the end therefore if Giggs is problematic then get Kluivert in or somebody.

The non-reaction was weird, it is likely Giggs was adamant we needed Falcao on as that's what Fergie probably would have done, he liked to throw strikers on, but even if you're wrong and the manager is right (despite a baffling sub) you still have to celebrate when we score.

To me it looked like he was annoyed we scored probably because Louis van Gaal could justify his subs, it was a very weird reaction.

I honestly don't trust Giggs, he is highly ambitious, he has betrayed his brother in the past and I wouldn't put it past him doing anything in his power to get that job. It's a quality you admire in football management, that ruthless decision making but not in an assistant who must serve the manager especially during a rebuild.

I hope I'm wrong and he and the manager are on excellent terms. On the other hand he could just be incredibly annoyed at himself because he would have made a different decision had he been the manager and it could have cost us, perhaps that's his high standards.

Some of the reason we've not lost points in the last 10 has been down to De Gea making great saves rather than us seeing it out professionally. We have a lot to thank him for this season.

I think we've been better the last three games. Still struggling to create which is frustrating, but aside from that we have been better.

Thinking on it a bit, I'll give Giggs the benefit of the doubt and imagine that if LVG was spitting in my face during his celebration (you never know!) accidentally or waving his fist very close to your noggin then it might suddenly make your face stop smiling! But it was a bit weird, I'm sure the media will jump on it somehow.

Michael Owen spot on, for once.
Finishing fourth isn't and shouldn't be regarded as a success. It's par for the course (at best) and the fact that he's struggling to stay in the top four places should tell you he isn't doing such a great job.

What did Owen say? I couldn't hear him.

I think over time the scale and scope of what is required to make us competitive challengers again has been unraveling rather painfully. Most of the contentious issues that we have seen in this post SAF era were present in his final two seasons. The only difference is that we had him at the helm. His aura and managerial je ne sais quoi fortunately proved capable of coaxing effective results out of these players. Kindly note the deliberate allusion to results rather than performance, for the state of the latter somewhat resembled what we have seen in these past two seasons.

At least from an external perspective, the shared indicators of malaise have remained associated with movement, or the lack of it. Our movement has been poor off the ball in both the defensive and attacking phases of play.

Defensively, we have continued to stand off teams, letting them keep ball and at times drive deep through our midfield out of all places with barely enough cover or pressure on them. The result has been the impression that our central midfield is ineffective, where as in actual fact it has been- sadly only when on the ball/in possession. We need a concerted pressing game, from the front. This is something that we have lacked since the days of having both Tevez and Rooney in the lineup. The lack of pressing from our forwards has served to further highlight the distance between our midfield and attack when not in possession. The midfield has often resorted to retreat further towards our defensive third while our attack has more or less remained rooted centrally, in the final third, allowing the opposition's defence to easily track and contain it in the event of a turnover. This situation has looked even worse when we have played against adventurous teams that push out their defence lines further when in attack.

In attack, again our lack of off the ball movement has been detrimental to the amount of chances we have created and the supply of feasible options from our forwards. Far too often we have seen our wide players opt to pass the ball backwards when in good position for lack of better incisive forward options. This has simply been the result of too many players not moving quickly enough to get into good positions or disrupt the opposition's defensive organisation.

Maybe there is a need for wholesale changes to the outfield players before we can start seeing us performing to anything matching the supporters' expectations. But for the time being and with the personnel available (who have sadly gotten used to poor movement) I remain resigned to insipid performances match after match. Personally, I hope LVG or whoever will be in charge gets the opportunity to completely overhaul the outfield personnel.

Louis does seem like he goes over the top, he probably does things like that in training and Giggs just sees them as unnecessary. We only see the motionless man in his chair paying total attention to what's happening but there are enough gifs that show him to be a bit over the top. So it is possible it's just a normal reaction, Louis van Gaal is the kind of man who could be watching United U12s play with Giggs and when they score a late goal he goes mental in his celebration, Giggs probably is used to ignoring that.

Stifled is what I'd call us. I can't shake the feeling that we are capable of more but we can't quite get there. The problem is I think it's instructions from the manager that are causing us to play this way.

Anyone saying this is worse than last year needs to get their head checked though, we were much much worse last year.
