United aiming to sell Harry Maguire next summer according to Jamie Jackson

I don't understand corporate finances at all but is there any chance it was to sustain club value? Selling for £20m is worse on paper than keeping the asset and valuing at £30m for example maybe?

Anyone that understands finance able to shed some light on if this is plausible at all?
Unfortunately many still don’t realise how silly banking and accounting can be in real life. Not sure how long the rosy narrative can be painted in the West as the fundamentals continue to crumble.

Character, leadership , takes some heat off others… they are not traits Maguire has displayed so far.

The ‘takes some heat off others’ aspect comes by itself. Just look at this team, 95% of the media’s focus this season has been on our back up striker and our 4th ranked CB. If Maguire goes there he would be held accountable for the team’s performance. Right now Moutinho, Neves and co are put there and they aren’t handling it well. Everyone are shrinking. They are manhandled.

Chris Smalling, an England international and former Man Utd captain, went for what, £15 million ?
Smalling was no longer a England international when we sold him.

Maguire is still currently England first choice CB.

Probably best for all parties. Maguire needs a reset and we need somebody younger to cover and (eventually) replace the not-so-reliable Varane. Lindelof can stick around as fourth choice.

United would have to give him on a free or something for anyone to take him.

“Juventus have joined Inter Milan in monitoring the situation of 33-year-old English centre-back Chris Smalling, who could be out of contract at Roma in the summer if he does not accept a proposal to renew or take up an option to extend his deal at the Italian club. (Sky Sports Italia - in Italian)

Surely Maguire must like Pizza?

Now that he's had a good tournament he should be attractive to some teams. Especially in Italy. Best time to sell him.

More than a whiff of “I know people go on about wood fired artisan pizza, but for me, Chicago Town’s frozen meat feast is as good as anything you’ll get in Italy. And the beauty of it is there’s always a nice crunch from it, no matter how long you cook it for” from him.

I agree.

1. He is clearly our 4th option at CB due to his lack of mobility when we are playing up the ball from the back end
2. He should clearly have a lot of value for a coach that isn’t inclined to play up the ball from the back
3. We need to shore up our financials. Maguire is on 190k a week, on all other top teams that puts him what in the top 3/5 except Manchester City for which he would be the 7th highest paid players

Harry Maguire — without the wages — should be what a 40m player at least? He makes 9.8m per year in wages. If we pick up half his salary, it’s 15m. Regardless of how it is handled, sell him for 25m and the buyer pays him 5m extra in sign-on fee per year for three years or sell him for 40m and we pick up 50% if his salary somewhat like with Lukaku (I think).

With Argentina and France quite likely in the WC final, then Maguire should get plently of game time over the Christmas matches to see if he can get back in the team again.

Maguire's PR team should bite back to be honest, he's done alright at the World Cup.

Hopefully he has an ok couple of games before us when we restart, and then we can sell him in January forsome decent money...even if we get half our money back we should take it.

ETH will bring in somebody much better

I see that we are linked with kim min jae frm napoli again. But surely hes a south korean maguire? Big string not particularly quick. Recovery pace i thought would be key for any new CB someone i.e. like upmenacano from bayern.

Hopefully, he did with Martinez, but at this WC, if you’d never seen either play before, who really would consider Timber better than Maguire?

Would really like us to replace him with Gvardiol. Two lefties with him and Martinez though, so not sure how that would go down. I've heard good things about Antonio Silva also.

We've learned nothing new in this tournament. In the right system Maguire is a perfectly fine centre back. If he isn't going to flourish playing the way United want to play then we should let him go

Even if he had a ok / decent WC, it still ends with him getting beat to the ball by Giroud for France to get the winner. Same old.

No the narrative was Maguire could only function in a negative defensive 343. He's proven he can function in system which isn't tailored towards him which has been argument and people pointing out he is completely useless., the question only left now is can he suit Ten Hag's system that requires a high line, with defenders playing out from the back

Respectfully, can you really see Maguire providing what ETH wants from a centre-back? Being able to play out from the back — even if we like face a Klopp team really trying to geugenpress us?

I just cannot remotely see it. I like Harry. I want him to succeed. But in a system like ETHs — I just cannot at all see it.

The thing that I don’t get at all is how many, like a ton of journalists around this team, seem to think that Maguire could make it work in that role that — for any CB — is extremely demanding in terms of mobility, technical ability, handling the ball, speed, dribbling, being pressure resistant?

From my POV, it’s exactly like someone claiming that Fred could handle Bruno’s role. What am I missing?

And why are people talking about a “high line” as much as they are?
We basically haven’t been able to play with a high line that often even with Martinez and Varane. To do that, you really need to be able to pin down the opponent deep. That is hardly Maguire’s biggest problem.

I mean, I could be wrong. For sure. But what am I missing? For me it is extremely clear that ETH has extremely high demands on his CB’s ability to partake in a system where it is key to play up from the back. This is almost never mentioned around Maguire, instead the narrative is about if he can be protected defensively or play on a high line. I think Maguire’s defense is one of ETH’s least concerns.

He so deserved that header to go in. It would have been a glorious moment and huge middle finger to the entire world who has turned him into a laughing stock. He was the one player I rooted hard for this tournament.

Same would have sat down most of the morons who love to hate on the guy simply for having a prolonged bad run of form for his club as if he's the first player ever to underperform.

He was close with the header and I think everyone thought he scored but the duality of Maguire was soon on show for a bloke that is supposedly world class at defending his own box, he let the only man in the world who's slower than he is, Giroud, get goal side of him for a cross he should have easily snuffed out.

Hope we get a good price for him, he had a great world cup but he doesn't fit the system still.

Great probing passes between the lines but dithers too much on the ball, makes unforced errors still so he's worth a good chunk of cash but not the right player for the system.

Surely Everton or Westham would be willing to pay 30m for him in January. Pretty decent centre back despite limitations. Good age and good injury record. Was probably our best player in Oles last full season so much so I think we would have won the Europa final in 2021 had he not missed it.

I think our only hope is a PL established team (like Everton) getting dragged into a relegation dog fight, panicking and signing Maguire to sure up a defence.

He did? England didn't play anyone until France and then he was poor. I don't think teams are that stupid mate.

Everton are skint. They cant afford him. FFP have them by the balls after all the spending they've done the last 10 years.
