United aiming to sell Harry Maguire next summer according to Jamie Jackson

Surely Everton or Westham would be willing to pay 30m for him in January. Pretty decent centre back despite limitations. Good age and good injury record. Was probably our best player in Oles last full season so much so I think we would have won the Europa final in 2021 had he not missed it.
I can see various PL clubs (including those 2 you mentioned) and a few in Italy being interested in Maguire. He's a very good center-back that's clear.

With Argentina and France quite likely in the WC final, then Maguire should get plently of game time over the Christmas matches to see if he can get back in the team again.

No thanks. Just hope Varane and Martinez leave the rest of the tournament unscathed and in good health. We finally have the semblance of a top CB pairing, the first in over a decade.

There's no way he goes for over £30m and that would only be a January transfer, in the summer he goes for around £20m.

Seems a bit low. Let's see. For teams wanting to play on the counter in a low block, he could be pretty good. But he is definitely not suited for the EtH style of play.

Could we maybe sell him for GBP 48 million?

according to my mum, no one in the world has that many good boy points, even if they tidied their room every day.

If he just scored that header, we could be selling a WC champion and have Varane back early.

The problem might actually be his wages, whoever will be going him I highly doubt will pay 30-40m and then his wages.

He did? England didn't play anyone until France and then he was poor. I don't think teams are that stupid mate.

“Poor”, bloody hell mate.

If that’s simply due to the goal, do please tell me what Stones was doing on the goal, marking no-one, doesn’t look around once, and leaves Maguire with two men to try and mark on an absolutely brilliant cross. And Maguire still pretty much got there too.

England were 'poor' in general for me but Maguire doesn't exactly stand out as the best of anything.

Linde should go first, but if the right offer comes... still hope ETH will secure a no BS defender, just before selling.

Watching England drove me mad at times, the painfully slow possession it at the back, Maguire stood static with the ball at his feet with 20 yds of space ahead of him only to pass to Stones, who passes it back, and they repeat for another dozen passes, you dont see the top teams playing such tumescent football.
Maguire is good at headin balls clear and occasionally hoofing it but his slowness both in possession and when defending makes him not fit for purpose in a red shirt under ETH. He is behind Varane Martinez and Lindelof as a starter. The sooner he is replaced the better.

Respectfully, can you really see Maguire providing what ETH wants from a centre-back? Being able to play out from the back — even if we like face a Klopp team really trying to geugenpress us?

I just cannot remotely see it. I like Harry. I want him to succeed. But in a system like ETHs — I just cannot at all see it.

The thing that I don’t get at all is how many, like a ton of journalists around this team, seem to think that Maguire could make it work in that role that — for any CB — is extremely demanding in terms of mobility, technical ability, handling the ball, speed, dribbling, being pressure resistant?

From my POV, it’s exactly like someone claiming that Fred could handle Bruno’s role. What am I missing?

And why are people talking about a “high line” as much as they are?
We basically haven’t been able to play with a high line that often even with Martinez and Varane. To do that, you really need to be able to pin down the opponent deep. That is hardly Maguire’s biggest problem.

I mean, I could be wrong. For sure. But what am I missing? For me it is extremely clear that ETH has extremely high demands on his CB’s ability to partake in a system where it is key to play up from the back. This is almost never mentioned around Maguire, instead the narrative is about if he can be protected defensively or play on a high line. I think Maguire’s defense is one of ETH’s least concerns.

Hey, I'm not endorsing it, more saying this is the likely outcome for a few games given at least one of Martinez and Varane are most likely going to be going to WC final, if not both, and I'd have thought ETH will want to give them a little time to recover afterwards. Maguire will likely see it as his big chance to show he can cut it in a ETH team, which we all know is very improbable, but it's a chance all the same.

Longer term Maguire will likely be moved on, but that's not going to be that easy as we can't just sell him a for a few million, we'll need to be getting North of £35-£40 million or it doesn't make sense (unless of course money isn't an issue next summer... ), Whatever it's not that terrible to have him as an option for a while longer imo.

I would like to thank Harry for playing well in this World Cup and enabling a sale of his immobile ass elsewhere.

Stones was caught in no man’s land, completely switched off.

AWB and Donny will not generate more than 20m combined. Great if we can get 25m for Maguire considering his wages. Maybe we can get 25m for Henderson as well. That is 70m for a new striker. Then consider selling Sancho to pay for a pacy CB, Kotchap at Soton?

He was close with the header and I think everyone thought he scored but the duality of Maguire was soon on show for a bloke that is supposedly world class at defending his own box, he let the only man in the world who's slower than he is, Giroud, get goal side of him for a cross he should have easily snuffed out.
Where was Stones, in that scenario? It should have been him challenging not Maguire

Given Varane's track record that's a bit optomistic

Lindelof is probably a better 3rd choice defender. Unassuming, can slot in occasionally.
You can't have an 80m guy on 200k a week hanging about on the bench.

Not sure about that reading of things, I'd argue that having a CB on whatever wages he's on languishing on a bench at the latter end of his career is good for nobody. Surely in that context recouping 25 million on our investment is not that bad, a lot of the rest has already been written off over the course of his service.

Then there's the fact that he's totally unsuitable. That means he isn't an especially great squad option for the manager. He'd probably rather have a younger player that is malleable, improving, less likely to be unhappy in the longer term.

Keeping guys around just because of pride over the initial investment is usually cutting your nose off to spite your face. AWB is another we have to take a huge hit on and admit defeat.

No way does he go for less than 40m :wenger:

One of the deals when it through were everyone with a brain said Utd paid about £40 million too much. Tells you that clowns were running the club.

Pep might be interested as he was a big fan before he went to Utd.

Good point. Can see Newcastle signing him, maybe Chelsea because they sometimes play with a 3, maybe Spurs if they lose Romero they might settle on Maguire as a replacement if the price is right.
