Unai Emery - Ex-Arsenal Manager

ehh 50mil? Thats one player lol, even the bargain basement poverty specialists Spurs will have more than that.
If it's just 50mil in budget it's not a lot. But it depends what 50mil buget means. In football, transfers are amortized over the duration of the contract. Here is an interessting article about the budget from arsenal:
https://shewore.com/2018/05/19/arsenals-50m-budget-explained/

So let’s list what Arsenal could actually sign within their £50m budget

1x £50m player on a 5 year deal

1x £40m player on a 4 year deal

1x £25m player on a 5 year deal

1x £25m player on a 5 year deal

1x £20m player on a 4 year deal

£160m outlay on players, yet it will only increase our yearly outgoings by £50m. It is within the budget. Of course, the club won’t want to be bang on break even, as this leaves little wiggle room in future transfer windows. Although as previously signed players transfer fees become fully amortised, this frees up cash.

And this does not even include any profit we make from players sold. We could easily raise a further £20m just in the sale of Ospina, Jenkinson, Perez & Campbell.

The reality is, once fully explained, having a pre-sales budget of £50m is actually more than sufficient.

For Arsenal you need to include wages and agent fee in the transfer budget back in Wenger's era.

Yeah now they signed one top top player ...
Sadly he really isnt all that good at defending even if he is a defender. ..

Sokratis is a decent enough defender, a no nonense defender too which is what they need sort of. Depending on the fee and length of contract, he would be a good signing for Arsenal. Their options at CB are terrible really after Mustafi who isn't all that great himself, Kos is finished now with that injury, Holding and Chambers are average.

Unfortunately arsenal don’t have the luxury of spending 200m a season on players who don’t perform. Clearly it’s down to bad management lucky you guys are able to do that and win major trophies.

I rate Sokratis as a better pure defender than Mustafi. He's nothing special but Mustafi is too mistake prone

I'd like to hear @Ecstatic opinions on this

All I know is that he wasn't the right coach to make PSG triumph in Europe.

I will say in no particular order that:

(1) I was disappointed by his management skills: the cases of Ben Arfa/Krychowiak in 2016/17, Neymar vs Cavani in 2017/18...
(2) He lacked courage. Rabiot didn't want to play as a #6 despite the injury of Motta. Dani Alves did want to play all the games >>> exhausted in the 2nd part of the season
(3) He failed to change the mindset of players like Rabiot and Kurzawa: talented on paper but something is wrong
(4) Monaco champions in 2016/17...
(5) Real Madrid - PSG: catastrophic preparation
(6) Barcelona 6-1 PSG
(7) Unai Emery won 0 away League games in his last season as a Sevilla coach
(8) He never makes sub before the 75th minute

On the other hand, I don't think he had full authority and powers to apply.

At the end of the day, he has an excellent CV and he's still a young coach so he can improve and be successful at Arsenal

Naive manger. Telling his players to pass out from the back and playing a kid from French second division against the best team in the country.

Bizarre team selection. Lucas Torreira on the bench and a kid way out of his depth in CM - alongside the "calming" presence of one Granit Xhaka.

Mkhitaryan and Özil on the wings against a City with über-attacking full backs.

It's his first game and against the strongest ever PL team to play, the guy needs some time to get them going

Emery can make a fine counter attacking side out of this arsenal. Whether top 4 is realistic will remain to be seen. But Arsenal will give him a few years regardless while their DoF will develop their team.

Fair point but didn't anyone question his tactics/team sheet? Not even a bit of side eye?

Exactly, it’s against the best team in the league... wouldn’t you think you’d want a CM in there who has the most tackles in Serie A for the last two seasons running??? Seems to me that would be a prudent tactical decision.

I don't think he's playing for results now, if this is his tactics he's trying to build something here, anyone can place 10 men behind the ball against City and try to grind it out

If he wants to improve Arsenal unfortunately it's going to take a lot of work and some bad results will come, i'll wait to judge him after Christmas to see what's going on there

Just do that then and pick the other games to teach and experiment. Imho of course....

You make a fair point r.e building something, But I’m not suggesting playing ten men behind the ball. torreira is well known for being a fierce midfielder that is aggressive and closes down, surely he would be a perfect player to combat that city midfield ??

Yeah I guess he would but it's hard to know what Unai is thinking at the minute so lets wait and see

I still feel like i'm watching Wengers Arsenal. No real hand of Emery visible yet. I guess he will need a season or 2 to get where he wants to be with this squad. And there is nothing wrong with that. I wonder if the Arsenal fans will give him time before the moaning starts.

Can't even fault him right now. They are competing for the 4th spot with Spurs and Chelsea and they have the weakest squad in terms of quality. They need upgrades in midfield, the defense outside of Bellerin is not even midtable quality and the attack is full of has-beens. This is going to be a rather long rebuild job.

What some people are expecting in the first game after 22 years from Wenger?
It's not like Emery has a complete new team.

Can't be evaluated currently. Crap squad + pretty bad luck to start with these 2 matches.

I see Chelsea as title contenders as well.

They are about to realise Wenger wasn’t so bad after all.

A disjointed team getting used to new tactics with several new players went up against one of the best teams in the world, no points guessing which one came second best.
